Rogue One Disney+ TV Show Casts Stellan Skarsgard & Kyle Soller

Disney may have taken its foot off the accelerator of Star Wars movies, but given the success it’s had on Disney+ with The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars, it’s moving full steam ahead on TV shows. The next up (unless the Obi-Wan Kenobi series gets back to production) is Rogue One, and the show is ramping up casting with Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller landing roles.

There’s no word on the roles the two actors will play, but Skarsgard is a regular player of villains or wise old men so he could be going in either direction. Kyle Soller may be best known as “that guy” from a variety of films, but he’s currently voice acting in 101 Dalmation Street.

Little is known about the show itself other than that it’s a prequel to a prequel. It will focus on the early days of the Rebellion’s fight against the Empire and feature Diego Luna’s character, Cassian Andor. Luna is already confirmed to be returning, and Alan Tudyk is expected to reprise his role as droid K-2SO, lending some humor to the show.

Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote and infamously re-directed Rogue One after Disney demanded changes, will write the pilot for the series and is expected to direct multiple episodes. When the show will get underway is still up in the air given all of Hollywood is shut down due to COVID-19.

There is definitely a wealth of lore and story to be mined from this era of Star Wars, and Rogue One delivered a host of interesting characters even if it did it imperfectly. It is, in general, one of the more well-respected efforts of Disney’s Star Wars films. That isn’t the highest bar though, and going back to something they know people liked is probably a good idea after the nearly universal panning of The Rise of Skywalker.
