ok, so i'm a weirdo that likes to write stories rather than doodle in class, and no matter how hard i try i can't come up with good descriptions of power armor. it's usually something like
"the gleaming dark carapace of the power armor resembled that of suits of plate armor worn by knights, it was typical:pauldrons, greaves, cuirass, boots, gauntlets and a helmet. however the pieces were larger, sleeker and exaggerated in order to store the vast amount of technology beneath."
so i ask you,my brother and sister escapists, how would you describe power armor?
Wrong forum. Put this in off-topic discussion.
He's asking for advice...Is this not what the advice forum is for?
A good source for ideas would be the Warhammer 40,000 Horus Heresy series, especially the first couple of books.
Because they're an introduction to the universe and it's inhabitants, a lot of effort is taken in describing the Space Marines and their power armour.
Also, the opening chapters of pretty much any WH:40K usually has a good description of power armour as the first Space Marines make their appearance.
You can read pdf extracts from most of the books here:
thanks man, i really appreciate it!
Don't assume that your reader will instantly know what specialised terms like cuirass, pauldrons and greaves are. Introduce them along with a description so your reader has something to give them a mental image.
Also, use readily available real-world description or analogy to describe the armor. The novel Starship Troopers is (unlike the film) about super-soldiers who spend most of their combat time in power-armor suits... and about the only descriptive detail the author (Heinlein) goes into is saying they're gorilla-like. Just that description, and we already get an idea for the bulk and posture of the armor - the less-important details can be filled in later or just left to the reader's imagination.
batou, thank you so much man :) thats some great advice. thanks man
