where can I meet nerdy girls

so I've only found dates on the internet before, and I'm starting to think the real world might be a better place to look.

Mostly I'm looking for someone with shared interests, games, anime, anything nerdy works. Where should I look? What hobbies tend to have a larger proportion of female participants, or just what hobbies tend to involve large enough groups that I can meet a lot of people some of whom are female?

You ever try game/comic conventions?

That's certainly one idea, but it's not the season and I was looking for something I could do all year.

One example would be Magic cards, I used to play and could pick it up again easily. I even know of a bar that hosts a magic club of sorts every Sunday afternoon. Problem being that I've been there and the only girls are people trying to take advantage of the patio on a warm day and are making fun of the guys playing cards.

Another example would be a blood bowl league I played with a few years back, only woman there started her life male.

Some girls do play Magic, so that might be an idea.
But if you are going there specifically to pick up a girl, they will probably notice.
Also, a lot of nerd girls are already taken by nerd boys.
Single nerd girls, the internet is probably the place.

do you mean hipster girls? they would be easier to find and might be nerdy themselves.

Good luck anyway matey

Internets are probably you best bet, sometimes neady girls don't get out much. It would be best just to stick what you like doing and if you manage to meet a nice lass, bonus.

In my experience, the internet is one of the worst ways of actually hooking up with girls (it makes communication easy, but that's where the benefits start and finish). Real life is where it's at.

Where can you find geeky girls? Well, just about ANYWHERE.

The obvious geek-havens would be stuff like:

- Comics or anime conventions (girls love cosplay)
- LARP groups
- Wargaming and roleplay groups
- Anime or scifi film societies

The only downside is that the above are all male-dominated, so if you're trying to get with girls in these environments, prepare to be cock-blocked pretty hard by all the other guys with exactly the same intentions as you.

So, let's broaden our horizons a bit.

In my experience, other great places to meet a variety of women:

- Nightclubs. Don't want a bleached blonde bimbo? Go to a rock or metal club, you get a distinctly different type of person there.
- The workplace!
- Sports clubs, especially certain martial arts.
- Language courses. Always popular with girls, and plenty of opportunities for "partnering up" and conversation.
- The goldmine: dance classes. Not ballet or tap, choose something that traditionally has male and female roles, like salsa or ballroom. Men are always in demand in classes like these.

And as always, the golden rule is: GET OUT THERE. Just go out with friends. Chat to their friends, or random people at the bar. Don't be pushy or desperate, things happen in their own time. But always remember, the girl of your dreams won't come knocking on your door. YOU have to get out there and meet people.

Yeah, I would recommend going to a comic book store or to a gaming competition. I wish I could give you more advice, but my boyfriend and I met in high school, where we were both in advanced classes. So we've known each other for a long time, and I've never had to go out and find another nerd/geek like me. But if there was a place, I would go to either of those.

They often work in bookshops and maybe open to chatting. Libraries can also work

I recommend any location that caters to your geeky interests. Yes, they will be male-dominated, but you can find some females in these locations. I met my husband at a D&D game, and I was the only female there. It can happen.

Take a class or two at the nearest College/University. Most of them will have clubs dedicated to whatever interests you, and with the exception of tech schools, most colleges have a high girl/guy ratio, and the girls you meet will likely be in a place in life where new relationships are welcome.

This only from personal experience, I married a geek who I met at school, and she's awesome.

Random thoughts..

Roleplaying tends to have a better ratio than most "nerdy" hobbies.

Try borderline activities like board game nights which are a little more 'casual' than Magic the Gathering.

Alternative music scenes often overlap to a degree with geek culture, or are at least compatible with it. What kind of music do you like?

Try something a little more highbrow. Go to film screenings rather than just "anime", or go to literary events. A lot of highly intelligent women are slightly more adult in their tastes than their male equivalents (with no offence intended, there's nothing wrong with having slightly childish hobbies, I'm still on this forum!)

If you do meet a girl at a "geeky" event, don't swamp her if she's already getting too much attention, don't be aggressive or predatory, don't beeline for the only female in the room like you've just smelled blood on the wind. These are the kinds of things which actually keep a lot of girls out of geeky hobbies or outright scare them off.

See, that's a problem I run into as well, not one easily solved either thanks to my location; a small village in the middle of the Netherlands. I find it extremely hard to find venues where I might find girls that actually like me for being a geek, someone who thinks I'm interesting and fun because of it, not boring and weird.

I mean, conventions are few and far between, and often in remote corners of the country, the only "alternative" bar that the city I frequent had was closed half a year ago, the only gaming clubs I could find I already joined, my college doesn't have any clubs I could join and my friends aren't much of a help either.

Basically, I feel sort of out of options. I'd like to look, as just waiting doesn't get you anything, but I don't know where. And hell, not just for girls, I'd just love to meet people in general who don't look at me oddly for liking D&D or something. I don't suppose that there's a fellow Dutchman around here who could give me some pro-tips.

It's worth noting that 'nerdy' girls tend to read. Hang out in a bookstore to find such a girl. A girl in a bookstore is more likely to respond to your advances anyway as compared to a girl who is actively engaged in a hobby (card game tournaments) or one who is at a convention (surrounded by other guys who have spent all day hitting on her). Also, at least in my area, most bookstores tend to have coffee shops. So, even if you don't find a girl who strikes your fancy, you've spent the day with a good book and a good cup of coffee.

If the girl of your dreams does happen to walk into the store while you're there, remember: confidence is key!

Yeah we don't have that here, sadly. It'd be a bloody brilliant concept, that's for sure. I do check our comic store and regular bookstore regulary, mostly for books of course. I ain't desperate.
