Asking a stupid question so others don't - tried using different USB slots? different computer?

Do you see anything in the bottom right hand corner? What about in the devices tab?

Start Menu -> Right Click to My Computer -> Manage
Now click on the Storage that is located in left menu and then under it click on Disk Management.

Make a screenshot and please post it here.

Everything's allright. It seems that your HDD isn't formated.
Right-Click this 1862.96 Gb partition.
Select FORMAT.
You should see this picture (or very similar) :

Make sure that everything is as suggested on this image.
You may want to enter anything in "Volume Label", for example "STORAGE".

As a side note - your other partition called "ELEMENTS" is formatted with FAT32 file system. This is older, slower, much less efficient file system - default for Windows 98. If this is possible you could move all data from "ELEMENTS" to your new partition ("Storage" ?), reformat "ELEMENTS" with NTFS and then move all data back. It will take some time, but your system should run faster. Much faster !

the format option is greyed out. the only option i have when i right click is "delete volume" and "help". the other elements hard drive has the option to format etc

when i right click to the left of the patition it gives the option of converting to a dynamic disk. not sure if that means anything.

thanks for the FAT32/NTFS tip and i will definatly do it if the 2nd hard drive works. would reformatting the hard drive to NTFS cause any issues when copying files to say a FAT usb memory stick?

so much for plug and play.

Interesting...
- Delete all volumes on said disc. Create new, single one, format it with NTFS partition.
- I'm not sure what you're asking about with NTFS/FAT migration (no hablas proper englese senor), but if you're asking if reformatting file system to NTFS will somehow damage/cap data exchange, then no. Have no worries. :)

excellent thanks that worked.
