BreakfastMan:
So basically, the site is in hospice now?

That's about the size of it, yeah. The mod team has been working to keep the wheels turning, but for the most part, what work you see being done is being done by the volunteers.

BreakfastMan:
Is there any plan on what to do once Yahtzee inevitably leaves?

Put our heads between our legs, and kiss our arses goodbye.

It's been discussed in the past numerous times. I think fair amount of people here just don't really care for Reddit. When the site inevitably fades into the great beyond I'd migrate to Reddit if someone made a well moderated sub, but my days of modding will likely die with this site.

I'll be here till the lights go out. So let's get out there and make the remain of our stay a good one. Thank you all for not abandoning us

/r/gaming is terrible, /r/games is also shit, but for different reasons, the best gaming sub i've seen is /r/pcgaming because it isn't chock full of idiots.

Could make ourselves a /r/EscapistMagazine or something if it comes to that?

This basically confirms what I've suspected for quite some time. I respect those trying to keep this site alive, it's certainly an uphill battle.

Well, I'll be damned. Not entirely a surprise, but still a surprise.

with the apparent exception of Yahtzee,

Naturally.

Caramel Frappe:
It warms my heart that there are those willing to stay at my side and continue to help this place run. I mean, everything at this point is volunteer work so to know so many people want this website to live is a great feeling, and hopefully, we can continue to make the best of it. Give us your feedback about content or ask us any question(s) and we can see about looking into it!

As always, I'm behind you and the mod team. <3

So how much CAN you guys do now? Do you all have full access to the forum/site software?

Elvis Starburst:
Could make ourselves a /r/EscapistMagazine or something if it comes to that?

An upvote/downvote system with a community automatically makes it total shit for me. And I have very good reasons too for saying that. It's alright for content generation. But for actual intelligent discussion and socialization, it's shit.

Nah, we would all be much better off if someone just simply bought some server space for a year in the US on the cheap and just hosted a forum there. And trust me, it is cheap. Like less than 200 for an entire year with tons of bandwidth to spare.

Just old yeller it already, Jesus.

dateryu:
Welp, time to replace that escapist bookmark with destructoid and keep an eye out for when Yahtzee does a Jim Sterling.

Dtoid isn't doing so hot these days either. If anything he could just go straight YouTube unless Polygon or IGN wants to cut the cheque.

Gaming websites are just not doing so hot, and that's been going on for about 5 years now.

Fucking this. I'd rather see the Escapist beg for donations than put up with Reddit trash.

Bloody Reddit of all things. What next, a Deviantart group? A -chan board? Tumblr?

Fair play guys. Going the distance.

Well, let's not jump down Elvis' throat entirely. He meant well.

So... do any of you guys have access the site's HTML code? Like, do you the ability to remove those empty boxes in the content schedule?

BreakfastMan:
Is there any plan on what to do once Yahtzee inevitably leaves?

I don't think he's likely to leave any time soon; Escapist owns the ZP IP and I can't see him wanting to leave without the IP, and I doubt defy will want to give it up easily: The escapist proper may be dead (a terrible shame as it is), but on youtube ZP still pulls in half a million views a week on average which I'm sure nets enough money to pay Yahtzee and put a bit of profit on top.

Escapist has been in a long decline for a long time, steadily bleeding creators. Though I feel like the biggest mistake, actually, was putting ZP on Youtube. I do understand in the short-term why they probably thought it was a good idea (larger audience, ad revenue), but in the long term it meant there was no particular reason for people to visit the site proper and discover the other content, and I have to assume that the site adverts and pub-subs (do they even still exist?) where more valuable to the Escapist than youtube revenue.

---

This situation saddens me very much; The Escapist was genuinely once one of the very best games media outlets, plus much extra content. Alas that that is gone. Nevertheless I appreciate what the Mods are doing to keep the site going for what little time it may have left. Who knows, maybe with some community ingenuity we might be able to make something of it. I'm afraid that I myself have little to offer by way of content, though I'll bear it in mind in case I think of something to write about.

What does Yatzhee feel about all of this?

ResonanceSD:

JoJo:

As many of you may have noticed by now, there hasn't been much staff interaction over the last few months. It is with regret that, to our knowledge, that all paid staff have been relieved of their duties, with the apparent exception of Yahtzee, The Escapist's streaming staff, and Encaen for a few contracted hours a month. We won't beat around the bush, it is a serious situation.

no shit. Why not just create a subreddit since there's no difference between an all volunteer mod team here or there?

reddit is ugly and gross. I never am sure who is commenting on what to who, or what is part of the topic, the forum, or a link to something else.

And all the people who say just kill the site...

You can leave ya know? I am fine staying with things as they are, dont need to ruin it for people like me who will stay.

"I dont enjoy this toy anymore, might as well break it and throw it away"

"...but I was still playing with it..."

Question is there any way to get ownership of the escapist site? Would defy turn it over/sell for cheap. Alternatively if its all volunteer run why not make our own site. I'm not able to build a site but if need be I'll pay to register and host something.

So, what is the requirements you guys have for putting something on the site? Can you guys do videos as well as articles?

Also, what does Encaen think of all this, as the last remaining member of staff?

I'm going to try to grab unanswered stuff but I miss you, I apologize in advance...

Aerosteam:
So... do any of you guys have access the site's HTML code? Like, do you the ability to remove those empty boxes in the content schedule?

I....don't believe so. We have access to some (hence why I can post my "Weekly Game Release" news things) but I don't believe we can change everything unfortunately.

plasmiusnake:
snip

I will bring it up to the others (although I suppose they'll see this just as easily as I do...)

Marik2:
What does Yatzhee feel about all of this?

Unknown. You could ask him I suppose but I don't know if he would answer. I like the guys stuff but he has never interacted with the Escapist community (on the forums at least, I believe he went to the Expo things...good God, remember the Expo things?) so I wouldn't expect that to change.

sneakypenguin:

We certainly could ask DEFY I suppose but I have heard that they can be...less than easy to work with (I have no idea how true that is though, I am only going off of what I have heard from people outside this site). I have no idea what kind of costs that would involve either. As to creating our own site, someone with WAAAAAAAAY more knowledge and drive would have to do that because I'm terribly useless.

BreakfastMan:
So, what is the requirements you guys have for putting something on the site? Can you guys do videos as well as articles?

As you've seen with Taco News, we can do articles and we have the ability to do video I believe (though no one has tried so I am assuming but I see no reason why we can't).

As to requirements "quality"-wise (if you were wondering about that, I'm not certain if you just wanted the technical part), it'll basically be kind of a judgement call on our part. We will have some standards when it comes to writing and video (even my silly "Weekly Game Release" thing goes through the team to iron out kinks and make what I write entertaining) so it's not like we'll just throw anything up :)

BreakfastMan:
Also, what does Encaen think of all this, as the last remaining member of staff?

He gave us his blessing to do this statement so presumably he is good with it. Or if you're wondering what he thinks of DEFY and the direction The Escapist has gone in, you'd have to ask him but I don't know if he'd answer...

Marik2:
What does Yatzhee feel about all of this?

Who cares what he thinks. He stopped caring about The Escapist a long time ago so I don't consider him one of us. As far as I'm concerned, we, being the collective Escapist community composed of volunteer staff members and users, now own The Escapist's entire spirit and most of the damn site since Defy has made it pretty clear that they don't want it.

Fine. We'll take it then.

Wintermute:
What's so bad about Reddit? I only visited it like 4 or 5 times.

It's not necessarily Reddit itself that's bad. It's the fact that upvote/downvote systems in general pretty much enforce mob mentality, prejudice, stale content, circlejerks, and witch hunts.

Wintermute:
What's so bad about Reddit? I only visited it like 4 or 5 times.

I dislike the format for discussion, just the aesthetics of it. Sentimentality aside, I always found the layout here of having thread pages staying mostly tidy (35 post cap, images and youtube easily added) and the sub-forums sorting threads by most recent post (not arbitrary upvoting) to be superior.

Back in 2010 the badges, quizzes and community outreach were major strengths of why I chose to spend time here. Over the course of the last year it was almost entirely force of habit that kept me here but there were still folks like Jojo and EscapeGoat who wanted to keep things moving forward since the alternative was just leaving. They asked for help, I do what I can. Me sitting and complaining was getting boring. ;)

Now the people providing things to read and do here are unpaid. If the infrastructure is still here, we may as well keep going. The 'regular' contributors for content are just as unpaid as anyone submitting to the site because they feel like it. The 'exposure' has only the value you yourself put to it, and if this goes successfully maybe patreons will take off.

Who can tell? We're in the wilderness together.

I'd rather find another forum than jump to Reddit personally but that's just my choice. The site is still running and so... life, uhhhhh, finds a way.

I salute you mods!
I'll stick around 'till the lights are out :)
Unfortunetaly I don't have any skills to help create content, I'll try to be as active as possible (not too active at the moment due to life scenarios) and write in a topic or two a week to keep numbers up.

You know how Tumblr and it's users are pure unadulterated cringe that are only good for porn? Well Reddit and it's users are exactly the same, including the porn thing. Just the cringe is more varied in flavour on Reddit. Plus the vote system is custom built for abuse by cliquey circle-jerks.

I know the prospect of drowning out any opposing opinion might appeal to a niche of Escapist users but I kinda like seeing varied viewpoints on things.

So to summarize. Unless the Escapist branches out into vidya porn it should avoid Reddit.

To all those decrying reddit for no coherent reason, feel free to post your ideas/solutions anywhere in this thread.

To be fair, it wasn't even really my idea. That honour goes to ResonanceSD for suggesting we migrate to a gaming reddit section. I just suggested making an Escapist based one, but even I'm not much of a fan of the idea. I'd rather keep this place together as long as we can than migrate to... Reddit of all things

Nah you can cop the flak, happy to hand that one off.

Btw, https://www.reddit.com/r/EscapistMagazine/ exists.

I been needing a reason to start streaming again and I would be happy to do it as a way to give new content. I don't like going on camera but id be happy to spend some of my time here casting if you guys have any thoughts or plans that could work with it.

Iv never earned money streaming or learned to properly set up a petreon so money isn't a issue to me either.
