An Open Letter to The Escapist Community

So it appears this announcement has garnered the attention of Escapist's old guard editors and content contributors. There's been some back and forth on Twitter about Susan Arendt, Russ, and some other folks potentially buying the site back (or crowdfunding a buy-out). Not sure how serious they are about it, but as far as I am concerned this is the best shot the site has at bouncing back. If anyone else feels the same way, please tweet at these guys and let them know you support them and their idea. Encouragement from the community can show them there are people here that still care, and miss the old site we all loved.

If any of the above Twitter users (Especially Susan) sees this, I SUPPORT YOU ALL! Take the Escapist back in control! Don't let it fall apart! I have no doubt many of us would all feel the same!

This is related to the site owner being one of that shithead Milo's cronies isn't it? No wonder Moviebob's contract did not get renewed, he regularly spoke out against that kind of crap.

The most effective way to get the message across is to tweet them! No guarantee they'll see our comments buried on page 5 :)

Way ahead of ya, I tweeted at several. But I'm hoping they might browse this page since they may have given it a look based on their tweets. And if they get this far... I wanted them to see further support on this end as well

Maybe Yahtzee should just be given the keys, and let him run the kingdom.

The "old guard" were the ones who started ruining it.
If susan, moviebob and jimsterling bought it and moderated it I would leave in an instant.
No Thanks!

I don't see why low-rent The Onion articles are being posted on a video game/digital entertainment site to begin with. It seems like the last thing the Escapist needed to promote to stay afloat.

And I don't see why it has to be complained about, and can't just be ignored. The site has gone to shit, there's nothing left here. There's no better alternatives as is. It might not be your cup of tea, but I am genuinely curious if you'd rather we don't have it at all.

My complaint is directed more so towards whoever curates content than it is to Taco himself. I don't think his content is a good fit for the site, especially not when it appeared for days as the only new content (Besides Zero Punctuation anyway) and listed under News.

My preference would be if they got their priorities right and promoted content relevant to the subject matters the site has been about all these years, which is escapist media - Video games and all sorts of digital entertainment.

It's good to see you again, dude!

And yeah, most folks aren't aware that the Escapist was bought by idiots and then resold to idiots none of whom understood the site or were particularly interested in making it work. Thus it's simplest to blame the people who made the site work.

I hope you and the others are doing well. I dunno where you are these days, btw.

I'd tweet my support but Twitter is fucking cancer.

Yahtzee doesn't care about the Escapist. At best, he'd just let it sit and stagnate as it's doing now.

Best of luck to all those who are still trying to keep the escapist afloat. After a brief perusal of the sites other content last week or so I'd figured something like this would be inevitable but it's nice to see the community trying to keep the site alive as best it can, I hope to fuck that it leads to some great things for those that contribute something to keep this ol' girl alive and that you manage to dredge the escapist out of the murky depths its fallen to. But if that isn't the case and this is to be the escapists last hurrah then I love and respect everyone I've ever met and not met on this site and all the time i've spent here has, for the most part, been supremely enjoyable.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I made the mistake of NOT watching Unskippable when you guys were current. I've marathoned the lot of it several times on YouTube and you guys were fantastic. So here's some long overdue kudos.

JoJo:
snip

First, thanks JoJo and all the mods that tried to keep the site together. Forum moderation is often a thankless job under even the best circumstances, and the work that the mods put in over the last few years to keep discussions civil and productive is pretty damn impressive.

Second, to the people (person?) that ruined this site by pandering to hyper-sensitive, "gamer correctness" edgelords and who ran good people out of here and hired "talent" like PressFartToContinue and then hitched their wagon to "alt-right" slime: SHAME ON YOU.

Third, I don't take any satisfaction or enjoyment out of watching this site slowly decline and come apart; I wouldn't have continued to post here long after my favorite writers/contributors had departed if I didn't think there was something of value in this site. But I'll point out this: A number of GamerGate supporters spent months actively trying get other gaming sites shut down, celebrated when sites like Joystiq closed (which had nothing to do with GG, BTW) and predicted the Escapist would thrive and replace sites like Kotaku and Gamasutra, which they alleged were imploding, as some part of new world order for gaming journalism. I hope that notion seems as laughable to GGers today as it did to non-GGers back then. I hope they realize they played an active role in cratering this site and the Escapist brand. And I hope they have fun on TechRaptor, Niche Gamer or whatever third-rate, DeepFreeze-approved hell hole they migrate to (while they last).

Well this was the most slowly drawn out inevitable death since SWTOR.

I remember Fappy and Redlin from the forums in 2010. Never thought they would end up running the place lol.

Obviously Yahtzee will go to Patreon, make way more than he ever did here and slap himself for not doing it years ago.
I carried on watching Bob for while after he went to Patreon but he was only making like one video per month on the actual Patreon funded YouTube channel and was clearly using the Patreon money to make videos for Screw Attack or wherever it was and getting double paid for the same content.

Maybe the Jimquisition could buy the Escapist and turn it into Boglinwatch.com.

Those were interesting but, man, Twitter is such a mess. How can people stand to navigate that everyday?

I wouldn't support buying the site through crowdfunding like Kickstarter, but I might buy some stock in a company they make to buy the Escapist.

I'll try and keep my expectations realistic (cynicism comes fairly easy for me), but good grief, I hope something comes out of that. More content and owners that cared about the site would be quite the improvement.

I don't know, making someone without a single post a mod just seems wrong to me. They aren't a member of this community.

Not a Mod. A spambot killer. Not attending to Mod duties--just helping to keep the site clean from 'bots. That's why he's not listed as a "Mod" on the Letter.

Big, big difference. :)

Yeah, but almost all of the other mods brought on "just to kill spambots" started doing other mod duties within a month, so you'll have to forgive me for not really seeing the difference.

Let's put this in perspective. If the site goes under, we're all out anyways. It'd be fine if folk don't agree with the new owners, and could consider the buyout as an unofficial "closing" and leave if they want. For folks like me who don't want that and would be happy to see the site continue under new potential that actually is involved with the community, I'd call that the preferable option.

Which is all fair, but at this point I'm not really picky. We don't have many better alternatives, so I'm not privy to telling the content we do have to stop. In the situation we're in, we don't have many choices in terms of content

All good things, I guess.

I used to be here a lot a long time ago, this site was amazing and though I moved on I think this place continued to make a really cool mark in its online space. I had one of the first threads in the politics board when that was created, I remember people like MaxTheReaper (who was a tool) and NukeTheWhales?? (who was amazing). I remember Newclassic of course, surprised you are sill here.

I wish you all the best and hope you land on your feet, I really do. Thanks for the memories.

Man if Susan came back with a mission to clean this place up I'd be so fucking happy.

C'mon people, time to get know as contributors in time for the Escapists grand resurgence. I wonder if people will be interested in my incoherent ramblings about non-gaming issues.

Long time (6 years or so) lurker here. Decided to make an account after reading this thread.
I honestly don't think it would take much to kick-start the site into something worthy of people's time. The main thing lacking right now is decent (and regular) content, and it's not terribly difficult to create, in my view.

I think asking for volunteers for content ideas and creation is the right way to go. Get right back down to basics. Yahtzee, Jim, Bob, they all started somewhere.

Decided to try my luck with messaging NewClassic regardless. Nothing to lose eh?

Honestly, I would be too if her and Russ could scrape together the cash to buy the site. But I don't know how feasable that actually is at this point...

I think the current staff should get in touch with the old staff and start having regular meetings to see what can be done. Or at least, that's what I'd be doing anyway. Fappy or someone, could you arrange this?

    Dreams can become reality though.
And even if it's not this place specifically, a new site run by them would be kickass.

  • Are you sure about this? Defy may later say since we signed up as users to their site, they own everything we write on here. I wouldn't put it past the assholes. Remember, these are the same people that got on Extra Credits' case for not giving them the excess money from their campaign to fund Allison's surgery. (Or something like that.)

Without contracts, it would be very difficult to legally enforce. Your can err on the side of caution. As of my last contracted freelancing, the full length was contracted for six months, so you can be cautious for that period of time. That said, there's nothing they can hold against you because you haven't signed anything.

    Roger that. Thanks!

Getting Susan back would definitely kill this place.

The community that grew under her is definitely one of the reasons this site's forum became known as badly as it was.

I don't think we ever really recovered from the kinds of people she brought here, and people still complain about passive-aggression to this day.
