BlizzCon '09: WoW: Cataclysm Worgen Hands-On

image

Cataclysm's Worgen get in touch with their wild side.

The newly unveiled WoW: Cataclysm is the talk of the show here at BlizzCon, and I got a chance to play through a bit of the starting area for the new Alliance race, the feral Worgen. I say "part" of the starting area, because we actually started at level 6 - apparently there are some big surprises lying in wait at the beginning.

My character woke up chained in a stockade, with two humans arguing whether or not to just put me to death or to give me the full dosage of the potential cure for the Worgen curse - one that would maybe allow me to retain my humanity.

Well, uh, it worked.

Interestingly enough, while out of combat, the Worgen can shift between their Worgen form and their normal Human state at the touch of a button - so if you want to hang out around the Auction House as a wolf or as a person, you can - but are forced into your Worgen form as soon as you enter combat. The transformation from human to Worgen is actually pretty well-done and looks painful (naturally, it's skipped in the in-combat shift).

From level 6 on, the storyline deals with a Forsaken assault on the lands of Gilneas, and I was - of course - sent to fight them off. Apparently, fighting off the Forsaken includes throwing kegs of gunpowder on the heads of Abominations so that a blunderbuss-packing quest giver can zap them from afar to blow them up. It also includes getting in a catapult to launch myself onto battleships to kill the captains.

But then, there was a twist - after turning in one final quest, the entire world shook around me. When I once again ventured outside, a huge portion of the coastline had vanished below the waves thanks to an earthquake - the first harbinger of the Cataclysm, one would assume. From there, the story turned to less of a "repel the Forsaken invasion," and more of a "We need to get out of here, now."

It wasn't anything too extraordinary, but the phasing and the (relatively) unexpected inclusion of the Cataclysm and how it changed the zone around me was a very cool touch. The little demo ended right after the first phase of the "evacuation" line, and we've seen that the effects of the Cataclysm will be much farther-reaching. We'll check out the Goblin starting area tomorrow, so come back for that!

sounds awesome. i can't wait.

Let's just hope that the starting areas for the Goblins and Worgen will be just as awesome as the Death Knights.

if only the human form looked more like the vyrkul well that and i hope i can alter the look of both forms

Worgen, the one thing that will make me play alliance.
For Gilneas!

Shame they have no racials.. Unlike those cheapskate goblins.

Who told you that? +Skinning, and they do it with their claws (so no knife needed), and a 10 second dash on a 3 minute cooldown.

Dammit, I can no longer call my self a Hordie. Or a Tauren enthusiast.

Blizzard, why must you test my loyalties so?

I suppose I'll be making a Worgen DK. It just sounds too awesome to pass up.

Let us applaud Blizzard for something we havent seen from them in months. Effort. Real Effort.

Did you get to try out the Darkflight sprint, is it like a rogue sprint or like a druid travel form(interpreted by the description saying "true form"). If it is like the rogue sprint, I bet it never makes it live.

It's exactly like Rogue Sprint. 70% speed for 10 seconds.

I agree with this one.

I really hate how the goblins have so many good racials. As a Worgen, I wouldn't do skinning cause it would be immoral and only a Rouge-imitate dash?

The worgen racials are so much better than the goblin ones, the goblin ones are really more of a convenience while worgen have actual combat uses.

Are they exactly like Stormwind humans when in non-worgen form? Do you choose how you look or is it semi-random?

I have to say, they do sound pretty damn awesome as it is.

FOR THE ALLIANCE! Finally a cool race, i am getting sick of my gnome warrior...
Don't judge me!

GNOME!!! *points accusingly*

I am dieing to level one of these but i'm still dreading the fact I have to do outlands again.

I'm going to love leveling one of these and one of the Goblins. The fact they can change form human to Wolf form is just badass.

Too bad the humans look terrible. It would have been nice to see a reskin of the old races, since everything else in WoW is getting a make over.

i no, horde will want this way more than alliance :(

also, when the world changes, is that gonna be a global thing, otherwise people will be running into invisable walls while questing together, then ill probably be ofline and not lie the new world or somethin

This is going to be very much like Burning Crusade. When it first came out you couldn't move for Blood Elves in the horde area, and for the first time since launch the Alliance began to become smaller than the horde.

I think the Worgens are another attempt at balancing out the two factions. The Worgens are badass while appealing to monster lovers and furrys of the horde side. The Goblins aren't quite as cool in most people eyes, but they appeal to thoughs who like comic relief and "cute" characters such as the Dwarfs and Gnomes.

NO! It was like this when i first got here! I SWEAR!

thats great but the server i used to play had an amost 2:1 of alliance:horde xD

I have the live stream (Hey, I take what I can get here in Australia!) and have to say, I've been thrilled with it all.

I'm a die-hard hunter since Vanilla, and this is the first expansion that's actually made me look forward to it with eagerness. BC I completely skipped (Burned out over-raiding aq40 and naxx. >.>) and Wrath was good but nothing really 'grabbed' me.

I'll probably reroll a worgen hunter, at the least. I've always loved the worgen, and am really looking forward to playing them. =)

I think that revamping the old world is definately the way to go and much less cheesy than a 'forgotten' continent or a risen one or whatever. I think WoW has come a long way in the last 5 years, and the chance to streamline the whole experience with what's been learned from the quest flows of BC and Wrath are only going to do good things for the playerbase. Leveling alts will be much less chorelike and much less 'run around everywhere!'.

I love that Ragnaros is back, and looking for revenge for that whole MC thing. =)

Goblins are a bit meh to me, but then, I've never really played horde, so I'm not fussed. I suppose if Worgen had gone Horde, I'd play them still, but I'm glad they didn't. :)

All in all, I'm hooked! And they didn't, y'know, redo it like this and release it as 'World of Warcraft 2', and try to maintain both in parallel, like some other game I could think of. ;)

Not to say they aren't remembering EQ: I am pretty sure EQ had an expansion focusing on the elemental planes, and implementing a system of small character perks/improvements not connected with levelling. One could, perhaps, call it an 'alternate advancement' system. ;) And this looks like it's going to be every bit as controversial as PoP was in EQ, with a loud subset of the population yelling 'No! You're making it too easy! I ground uphill both ways in snow, so noone should ever have a shovel!', while most of the population is quietly going 'Wow, this sounds less annoying and more fun!'.

the new expansion looks very worth it and i love that the alliance is getting the worgen even tho same thing as BC is gona happen again everyones gona go make a worgen lol just like how everyone made a blood elf oh well im a bit sad to see alot of azeroth getting destroyed [ darkshore =[ ] and it thats prob gona be a huge patch to download..... i just have one question about the worgen so far when in human form i wonder if u can still wear w/e equipment u have and if so when in worgen form would u still be wearing it ? and dash racial ability sounds prety cool the whole claw thing eh i dont like skining to much so dosent rely afect me =/

But... what if I haven't explored the original world yet...?

-shrinks back into a minority-

then hurry up, i cant imagine the new world...(drools to dead)

I wanted Ogres :(

BlizzCon no longer exists, It has been replaced by WoWCon...

fight the foresaken, but thats my favorite faction (technicly they are horde but if you have played as one they seem to be distant from there allies almost enouph to be there own faction)

slipknot4:

Get out. NOW.

This sounds cool, though I don't like the idea of shifting between the two forms.

But seriously, best sales? Really? That is so freakin cheap since they get everything at a lower cost. Worgen's only get like Viciousness and Abberation. Darkflight is ok, but Goblin's don't have to go to the bank and waste GRINDING TIME!!!

Then get exploring, because its about to change. ALOT.

Any word on a date for release? Or when the worldchange patch comes out which will be if you get the expansion or not?

The world change patch will be for everybody, if you have the expansion or no.
