Your MMO is a Joke Pages PREV 1 2 3
I hope so too! But there will be a jedi class and a smuggler class, and because this is a MMORPG, they need to be equally good. So it will end up with jedies having hard to kill smugglers. :/
I feel like Champions Online went for the mid 90's Warner Bros. Batman cartoon look and ended up as Adam West circa 1966. Maybe Champions Online will be the first MMO to tap into an audience of camp aficianados(gay men and old women).
Admittedly I haven't played it yet, but I was under the impression that the whole Great Hunter Search (or whatever they called it) was essentially, the Bounty Hunter campaign? That is, it's a huge ass Macguffin. That sounds a lot more Bioware to me, esp considering that they strongly preach the narrative and "telling a story" dynamic. Personally, I look at it similarly to WAR: there's going to be many proto-THE ONEs, and my job is to gain uniqueness, and make sure they don't make the cut. Of course, being the huge Spade that I am, I'm not often that successful or popular, but that's the theory. Regarding story and plot, well I'm also concerned, but I have a feeling it'll be short (like lvl 20 or something) before it's weak. Plenty of time for added content after launch.
I double dog dare you to sword me through a wall. And I bet a double barrage would be difficult for even a master to deflect.
2 words, monster island. there is nothing silly about a peace loving gorilla who takes a serum to help the heroes fight the bad guys to only end up becoming a giant king kong with flames coming out of him and turning savage. he is being nit picky he plays a few silly things and judges on that. The raptors are clones made by a man who is trying to create a race of perfect humans and the raptors are part of his army. Then there is all the criminals that break out of a super villain prison and you have to put a stop to them. There are plenty of quest lines that fall heavily on stereotype but have a serious nature to them.
So sorry if you like your MMOs to make absolute sense and be so HARDCORE like teh bist gam evarZ, WoW, but it's a comic book MMO. Wait, do you see this? Wow, people actually having fun! *GASP* You know, fun, that thing you're supposed to have when playing video games. And excuse me if I don't feel like being a fucking elf like everyone else who ends up in the same suit of armor as everyone else and actually wanted to make a totally customized character and fight crime as him instead of slay the dragon of the ancient temple with my ultmate god sword I quested for months to get.
You can apply this critique to any MMORPG. Given a broader perspective and understanding of what you're really looking at here - a simulated world in which everything is, in fact, artificial - the choice of what is and is not realistic is really more a matter of delusion. All any MMORPG has is a set of props placed in what each individual will decide for themselves is a realistic portrayal. To an extent, that one would find Champions Online's Snake Gulch scenario to be so very infeasible reinforces just how well they've been duped by the illusion. We don't question that Pac Man seems to be gobbling power pellets against the backdrop of an apparent infinity. How many fields of fiends wander about harassing good folk in plain sight of the guards in World of Warcraft? That we would question Champions Online more than World of Warcraft sort of suggests that we've reached an uncanny valley of sorts. It's actually realistic enough that you care about what isn't realistic enough. For that reason, I think this little rant of yours has stained your soap box with a substantial injustice.
as a person that is playing this game sins the beta: no... Tough, Foxbat (the bubblegum shooting hero/villain) is pretty funny. On a side note, on the CO forums there is a topic over 45 pages about this article now.
AAAADAAAAM WEEEEEEST | |
It's a game. You don't think all games need to be realistic, do you? You don't take games as real, do you? You don't really think a plumber was walking around slaughtering turles, do you? Another person we need to hide the sharp things from.
I will admit though, givem everything else that is out in Burning Sands, the first thought that crossed my mind was... "what is a theme park doing out here?!?¨ The thought quickly passed, and dismissed as creative license one sometimes has to give to art. Champions has some unforgivable faults... this is a forgiveable one.
Huh, I didn't know you could play a Civet cat in WoW... ;D
There is no, and has never been, a Champions Online trial...
I have a couple friends who play Champions, and though I haven't played it myself, talking to them and hearing them as they play, I gather the biggest issue is their xp curve and pacing. But the quests and items are nearly all puns to some degree, with no more complication or involvement than WoWs quests. Its Fedex quests and slay 10 arms dealers, and lots of 'find the serum and deliver it to doctor queazy.' It seems to be the cookiecutter MMO setup now, just add your own theme and little gimmick, then call it a game...
you understand that lack of any imput from lucas simply means the game will never actually reach print, and that the game wont even sell, games baseline now at $60, SW:toR will go for over $120
small price to pay so it will be free from such dialogue like "Sand is coarse, your skin is soft DURR HURR" passing for romance!
You need more friends who have lifetime subscriptions before you can make this statement.
Apparently they've decided to make the game free-to-play starting early next year. It'll be great to access the character creator for free, but as someone that played quite a bit of the game, I can't suggest it to anyone beyond the character creation stage. It's really as if the folks at Cryptic have no idea how to make a fun MMO, and have gone out of their way to make the game as unenjoyable as possible. Even the few things that are well implemented are undermined by glaring, obvious problems. We also need to have a serious talk with whoever it is that has the giant statue fetish.
An old thread but whatever. Let me put it this way, I would click through quests when i was too bored to read them and just wanted to get to the next level, but if i was in a good mood i would usually read the quest. Unfortunately, reading the quest would reward me with nonsense just as often as with good story. When i got a nonsense quest it REALLY discouraged me to invest myself in the world. I'm Ivanwatchenu! (yes, i am guilty of pun names as well). Deadly assassin of the Hord! (and yet i still want to be a part of the world even with my pun name). If I have to distance myself from the world because you're making me escort someone who apparently has a death wish (there are better examples than this but i can't think of any atm) then i feel like playing the game that much less. Honestly i couldn't keep away from wow for a while cause i was so attached to Ivan. Making a connection between the player and their character can be a very powerful tool for keeping the player invested in the game. But the idea that i CAN'T have that connection with my hero in champions online because the world isn't worth being a part of... that removed a lot of incentive for me to even get involved in your world.
