You can always try animation - it's easy enough to get started with 30 day trial software, or go digging around for free stuff. Also, webcams are dirt cheap now, and newer cell phones can do video as well. You may not be the next Scorsese, but greatness can be accomplished with very little in the way of equipment. Film festivals, including this one, tend to be more about creative accomplishment than special effects and fancy camera techniques. If you have an idea that you're passionate about, nothing will stop you from making it a reality. |

Hooray! I was right in thinking that was an intentional reference and not just you going mad! |

Just wondering, though, is only the overall winner guaranteed a contract, and not the category winners? Off topic, I think it's hilarious that after having Funk yell at everyone about no porn there's a thread a few updates ahead that is three pages on the merits of including fake breasts with a porn games. |

Only the overall winner is guaranteed a contract, that is correct BUT there is always the possibility for multiple contracts due to great work. That is what happened to Unskippable and Doomsday Arcade last year. |

There is no limit on number of entries. "Of age" means the age at which someone can legally consent to be photographed in the country/municipality in which the photographing is taking place. This varies, so we can't specify an exact age. It is also sometimes possible to grant an exception is the person is under age and their guardian provides consent, but as the filmmaker it is your responsibility to know the rules and be able to provide necessary signed consent forms if required to do so. Typically this rule will not need to be bothered with, but if you're working with minors or people who can be reasonably confused with minors, it pays to be strict about staying on the "not a pedophile" side of the law ;) |

Brilliant because i have 2 ideas :) and i will only stay on that side of the law for the escapist so feel privilidged... :S |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3967 Joined: 17 Jan 2009 | I've been brewing a concept for this moment...sadly, I am only 14, so I am lacking in funds, and age. If only I were 4 years older, at college, and had friends who would act for me. |

If you have an idea then you should act upon it. Most people who are involved in their careers were active in contests like these when they were children. America employers love people who have been active in contests and can prove their ability even if they don't win the contest. Remember you don't even need a camera to make a show. Zero Punctuation and Moviebob are just elaborate Powerpoint presentations and the meat of their content is their writing. The pictures are there to help keep the viewers attention and to visually demonstrate their point. So if you got an idea Star then act on it and get people involved. |

No, I didn't lie, I am in Hungary. But being in another country is no problem, there are certain travel methods designed especially to cover large distances... :) |

There's also the complication of my schedule, which is inhumanly booked. I wouldn't have the time to do so, anyway. My interest in the results of this competition, however, drives me to keep track of the events. |

Paperboy Posts: 20 Joined: 2 Sep 2009 | I'm sorely tempted to enter, but the terms of participation are unacceptable:
Nope. Absolutely no way. You can have a world-wide, unlimited, sub-licensable, perpetual, irrevocable license to the submission, but you can't have the copyright. |

I seem to recall that last year's comp had a statement saying that the creator of the video would retain full rights to their work if it did not win. Does this still apply? Having said that, as the winner, giving up full copyright is a major sacrifice, as it pretty much rules out having any supporting material to the video series (eg website, Twitter account, etc). I can understand The Escapist wanting the video to be exclusive to their site, but as an artist I would absolutely want to retain the rights to my work. |

I think in this stage the idea is more important than the glossy finish. So really all you need to get started is a webcam or even a phone with a camera. |

Yes but Doomsday Arcade was also given a contract. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 4 Joined: 14 Oct 2009 | I am so entering this! Just one question. You say no copyrighted material but we are allow to use game footage in reviews arnet we? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1651 Joined: 10 Sep 2008 |
I knew DA didn't win but you just confused me for a second because I thought you said that Unskippable also got a contract even though it didn't win. |

On the Record Posts: 6176 Joined: 28 Feb 2009 | I have a question. You stated that the video cannot be posted anywhere else prior to being entered in the contest. Which, I would assume, takes public sites like YouTube and the like out of the equation. What if, however, while working with people in other areas on the film, you need to show them footage or parts of the project before it's finished, and you use something like Photobucket to show them? Would that disqualify you? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2674 Joined: 15 Jun 2009 |
Couldn't you just email it to them? |

...*Sigh* Right, I didn't think about that. OK, nevermind, crisis averted. |

Same question. If I want to do a series of a vid after the contest even though I have won no contact, would I still be able to use it in other venues? |
Paperboy Posts: 20 Joined: 2 Sep 2009 |
That would depend on how "comprehensively" The Escapist views their just-acquired-for-free copyright. Escapist may or may not choose to license it back to you... Copyright extends to more than just instances of a work. Copyright also covers characters and character traits. This is why you can't use Mickey Mouse in an otherwise completely original cartoon without running afoul of Disney. A long-winded way of saying: The Escapist may choose to assert copyright not just over the video itself, but over the original characters in your video, thereby enjoining you from making any further use of any of it. The more I think about it, the less I like the deal as presented. (These difficulties would be easily solved if The Escapist would instead accept a liberal license to the submission, rather than the copyright proper.) |

I would very much like to have a video hosted here, but I rather suck
This is also my question, if I do happen to make the winning video(remember my comedy thing? Here it is) I don't think I could continually make videos, good ones on top of that.
