Honestly this game is fantastic.

I melted an emo kid's face off with a guitar solo flat out called "Face Melter".

If melting the face off one of those annoying bastards doesn't make a great game then you are truly something monstrous.

Cliff_m85:
Price of admission alone is the cut scene featuring "Mr. Crowley".

EPIC to the MAX.

That was probably my favourite scene in the game. Man, I'm going to go find that shit on youtube right now.

Darrkon Fearlock:
Not to try and destroy Yahtzee's point with the RTS thing, but after the game came out Tim Schafer came out and said not to play it like an RTS and to play it more like a hack and slash with RTS elements. Like you should be down there a fair bit with your guys, you just need to replenish them every once in a while.

Sorry Mr. Schafer, but that doesn't change the fact that RTS never should have been put in the game in the first place.

I was actually surprised that Yahtzee didn't like it. He seems to be into manly things (in a totally heterosexual way of course) and Brutal Legend at first glance would seem to fit the bill. Then of course comes along RTS and while I have nothing against RTS it doesn't really seem to fit into the "manly" category very well. On top of that it doesn't really seem to fit all that well with Heavy Metal either. And if that weren't bad enough the fact that the RTS aspect of the game wasn't particularly well advertised seems like a bit of a dick move. Overall I get the impression that Brutal Legend doesn't constitute one of Tim Schafer's masterpieces, but rather one of his experiments. Probably one of his failing experiments in terms of quality and content.

I must be one of the only sane people posting here. "Great review", "HAHA AWESOME IM SURE NOT TO BUY IT NOW LOL".... uh, what? Where was the review? All this came down to was 4 minutes of RTS bashing and Yahtzee's ever growing hate of newer Sandbox games.

MR T3D:
nice to see someone not drooling over it, and it seems like a pretty good review
1st to actually wathc it, then post?

oh nice, lol I love how they suspended or put people on probabation for even saying the F word.
I got banned but than agian...

Well lol good show though.

Honestly I bought the game half off and I am glad I did. Great fucking game really but I felt like the last half was lack luster and well the gameplay was pretty okay in the game but on multiplayer it falls short to other games like it.

Well Im kinda dissapointed at Brutal Legends negatives. I wasnt planning on buying the game new, I never do unless its Bioware, but if i was going to I would now just rent it or wait its price out.

Hell maybe I'll just watch someone play it on youtube for me. Worked with Wet.

Coincedently does anyone know a good website for that sort of thing? Watching someone play a game for you adequetly so you can enjoy the story?

YOUTUBE!
Duh.

Maybe I should rephrase that question for the slower folk in the building:

A good place to watch high quality videos of people playing games for me OTHER than youtube. Because when I was watching WET the guy kept commenting on it as though it was Unskippable or something.

I guessed as such, but I couldn't really think of anything, and there ARE some good videos of exactly that on YouTube, it all depends what game it is.
[ie I felt like being an utter dick].

Aesthetical Quietus:
*snip*

Fine, whatever.

This one made Yahtzee seem like a bit of a noob, see the flowers the game shows you to do a relic raiser at, do it, motorforge appears, I don't even have the game and I know that.
In other news: atill waiting for my DJ Hero to show up.

pimppeter2:
He gained some respect in my book.

I also want to say that I called it

]

What? You called that Yahtzee wouldn't like a game? Good call man, you're a genius!

No need to be a dick, I'm just saying that I called that yhatzee wouldn't fall head over heals for something just because its made by Tim Shaffer.

Like a lot of the rest of the gaming community was.

So fuck off

when is he going to review some of the really good games that just came out ? eg uncharted 2 or demons souls also funny review

Nice vid but wots wrong with rts'

I'm not sure if anyone had mentioned it BUT...
Both Jack Black AND Tim Schafer apeared on the same stage at the last Spike VGA; where they unveiled the Brutal Legend trailer.

It sounds like someone dose not like RTS's....

The games only problem is a lack of defining what the things are that you must get, and once you find them it becomes pretty easy. Tho it coudl have a automated RTS mode where you just go out in the field and beat crap up while it doe all the small work then when you need back up call for it and such. All in all its abit halfased in game mechanics but less so than most generic games made these days.

Very pleased to find out that not everyone likes this game, I know too many people whose mentality is "LOL JAK BLAK LOLOL XDDD"

RTS not manly?

Your telling other men what to do, because your superior. They know you to be some sort of Man-God yelling at them, telling them they are dirt, while they have to fight your battle, why? Because your having to much sex to kill them yourself. And these men don't want to work for you, but they also know if they don't they'll be next on your hit-list, which happens to be very short, why? Because your a badass. Now, tell me a RTS isn't manly.

LooK iTz Jinjo:
Yahtzee and me had the exact same feelings on this game... So promising, yet all that RTS bullshit...

I really do not see the problem with the RTS elements in the game... No, really I don't!

Thankyou, Yahtzee. You've summed up my exact feelings on the game. Loved Psychonauts, thought this game was an awkward, unfocused mess.

Now, tell me a RTS isn't manly.

I never said that RTS wasn't manly. I merely said that it doesn't SEEM TO fit in to the "manly" category VERY WELL. Stereotypically speaking "manly" is defined by the physical as opposed to the mental, or in other words action as opposed to thought. Therefore it would seem that anything that requires more thought than action isn't particularly compatible with the conventional view of "manliness".

RTS generally puts more emphasis on thought while hack-and-slash action obviously puts more emphasis on action. Maybe there are ways to blend action and thought effectively but it would seem that trying to blend hack-and-slash with RTS isn't a very good way to do it. To make matters worse the RTS aspect of Brutal Legend is lacking as pointed out in Yahtzee's review. On top of that that fact that Brutal Legend allows you to personally jump into the action makes the whole RTS aspect seem at least somewhat pointless. I think the whole RTS element would have been better left out altogether.

I need to make sure that I understand.
The player personally participates in the battle, and has only one strategic option (i.e, CHARGE). Yet, the mere necessity of summoning soldiers brand this an RTS? seriously, the hordes sound more like a fun backdrop for the battles more then anything.

it's hard to sometimes,Zing89. I just expected 'ol Yahtzee to be nicer than what he was here.

Wait.. what? Yes you did. You said: "Then of course comes along RTS and while I have nothing against RTS it doesn't really seem to fit into the "manly" category very well."

Again.. you said: "Then of course comes along RTS and while I have nothing against RTS it doesn't really seem to fit into the "manly" category very well."

So... in conclusion, you said RTS wasn't manly.. because... "Then of course comes along RTS and while I have nothing against RTS it doesn't really seem to fit into the "manly" category very well."

I dunno, I guess I thought it was funny.. because the other guy made me laugh.

Then again, Americans also have a habit of ignoring the fact that there are no WMDs in Iraq, so... anyway... where was I... ah, right, thank you.

Yes. We realize there are no WMD's in Iraq NOW but we had reasonable suspicion that there were before going in. Could you please actually study the Iraq War and the circumstances behind it before you make half-assed jabs against Americans? Thanks.

As a fully informed fully American, I would like to make a fully-assed observation. We did not have "reasonable suspicion". What we had, in fact, was shaky information from sources who were known to be unreliable and a corrupt White House leaning on the intelligence community to provide the answer they wanted rather than the truth. Colin Powell was not quoted as saying "I'm not reading this bulls**t" shortly before quitting because everything was on the up-and-up.

Lies and slander. I was following the Iraq from the beginning. The UN inspections were a complete sham. For all we knew the WMDs were moved from one location to another right under their noses. When we brought up the integrity of these investigations the US was shot down by the very people who set them up. Than suddenly Sadam destroys some nukes which he did not have. Also keep in mind that this man was on record for gassing his own people which requires biological warfare and broke 17 UN resolutions beforehand. He was not to be trusted. Do not believe in this political propaganda about how George Bush was a complete idiot and a criminal mastermind at the same time. It is utter rubbish.

ahhh total bumeri was expecting hardcore beatdown still
managedto kickazz though finally someone being honest

I was hoping I wouldn't have to explain this because it's a bit tedious.

SEEM TO = It looks that way but that could be wrong.

VERY WELL = It might fit in but not as well as other stuff.

Saying that something doesn't SEEM TO fit into a category VERY WELL leaves the issue open to debate and other possibities. You're not really taking a position but simply making an observation. Whereas simply saying something doesn't fit into a category leaves no room for other possibilities or debate. One is then taking a position and resisting other viewpoints. It's essentially having an open mind versus having a narrow mind. Or so it would seem anyway.

I really liked Brutal Legend but when it started to be like an RTS I did not expect that, I like to play RTSes sometimes but not when I don't know it is one when Im buying the game, when I was buying it I thought it was a hack and slash with some driving element. Its not so much the game its more of what the commericals said it was and its something different from what it said it was.

Its like when your opening christmas presents you wanted a puppy all year and you hear a puppy barking on the inside but when you open the gift its a cat, which is not that bad but its still not what you wanted or expected

Aww, I liked the game >>
But ah well, it no longer bother me that Yahtzee seems to hate everything but Portal and Silent Hill...

I'm fairly sure that apart from the RTS thing and the sandbox thing Yahtzee gave very little real criticism, and since he's a "praiser by exception"...

Dear Yatzeh,

how refreshing that you decided not to merely shit all over Bruuutal Legends. Oh, that's exactly what you did, pretty. At least there's always the Al Gore Carbon Tax for PROFIT scandal to make us wish You The People were as collectively critical.

Nice review.
I never knew that Mr. Croshaw has studied german

If you are refering to his pronounciation then I think he might just have a brain.

OT: What is wrong with linear games?

I'm pretty sure the comment was a reference to the text at the end of the video where Yahtzee claims to have studied German (and refuses to let an umlaut go unpronounced). The problem with trying to be smart-arse is if your not smart you just end being an arsehole...

Very funny and creative. I started reviewing games too
anthive.blogspot.com

I like how the entire first half of this thread is people who hadn't yet played Brutal Legend saying "YEAH, YOU TELL 'EM YAHTZEE" and the entire second half is filled with people who played it and said it was awesome.

I really do'nt get why people are hating on this. Is evereybody with a normal mind THIS picky? I do'nt play a game because it's shiny or is licenesed by shafer. It only got me interested. I play games to have fun and Do'nt look at it like I see it as a object to play and review a guy's work. I play them. why? To have fun. You now? Having fun? The point of Videogames in the first place? I sometimes wish I got paid to review games. Have a nice day. =)

good one.
Everyone and their mom seems to be griping about the RTS disguised as a hacknslash issue. I too was duped by the demo I downloaded and thought the game nothing more than an average HnS with jack black starring as jack black in a jack black production (and I fucking hate Jack Black, so that was already major points against it).
I uninstalled the demo and thought nothing else of it ever again until seeing some reviews.

Good points about the whole sandbox trend too. Not a complete fan of it. Most of the time it wreaks of a lack of original ideas and good writing to make a compelling linear storyline.
