I read this ever week and it is good as always except one thing: they have invented a black hole? Does it have an extremely high gravity field? Does it absorb light? Does it affect surrounding objects?. No it doesn't. It absorbs microwave radiation.
So can the walls of the microwave in my kitchen.
Therefore it is not a black hole by any defination.

The EmoBowl and watch seem like more of a toy than a tool. Most people are capable of making decisions, and they don't need a pretty bowl to tell them their stressed. I would just use it for the mesmerizing factor.

Besides, we already have LASER-modified silicon surfaces that do the same thing ("black silicon"); lots of nanoscale ridges on the surface trap the light.

Well, microwaves generated by a microwave are absorbed by the water, fats, and sugars in the food, and converted into heat energy, thus cooking your food. So, the microwave isn't really capturing microwaves, or absorbing them. The microwaves are converted into energy, which is different than being absorbed and trapped in a metamaterial.

China, eh? Chinese discoveries suprisingly often end up with their scientists shuffling their feet and pretending to look under their desks for a pencil when asked for hard evidence. Was this one really confirmed? I, being a very busy person, cannot go assert this myself, for I have just acquired the rope I require to retrieve a very important water chip and must soon be elsewhere.

It's mainly the tone of the last paragraph that got me to facepalm. The danger of masses collapsing to singularities isn't in that they are dark. Metamaterials are really cool, and though the misleading catchy title is understandable (even expected in news articles), the article didn't read like the distinction had been noticed.

I love the idea of using metamaterials for invisibility. I wouldn't mind having my very own invisibility cloak. On that note, would the materials work if they had a certain fluidity to them, like fabric? Or would they have to be solid to get the right effect?

Much as I appreciate the University of Texas's studies that tell us that men are after sex, perhaps looking at the recent news reports from Texas tell us that Texas isn't the most statistically normal states of the world.

The EmoBowl sounds truly ridiculous. I guess because it's pretty easy to tell when you're freaking out and need a break.
And I always focus on the face. In my book, boobs are just an afterthought.

Generally speaking I have my doubts about China having done this unless it can be demonstrated on a more practical scale. Not that I doubt that they could, I mean they are involved in a technological arms race and military build up, and the reasons why they would be interested in such things are obvious... BUT I would think that if this was truely accomplished at any practical level I wouldn't be hearing about it on The Escapist before anywhere else, and there would be more of an overall reaction.

The whole Face Vs. Body things sounds like a feminist rant of some sort to me. I say this simply because of all the ongoing jokes about "nice body, but you'd need to put a bag over her head". Ideally everyone is looking for their Bo Derek, but I think the whole either/or things scews everything.

Besides let's be honest, anyone familiar with "Pear Chan" even indirectly or simply the whole way people take face shots/pics of themselves over the internet is going to be a big wary about judging a person just from their face.

The Emobowl sounds like someone re-invented the Mood Ring. It might be a fad for aging Baby Boomers but other than that I can't see it catching on. I have been wrong before however.

Sending robots to Mars is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. To be honest I think I'm more wiht Asimov (in his writings) than the guys who did the recent "Battlestar Galactica" or "Terminator" when it comes to my opinions on Robots. But really, I think we haven't been there until an actual person lands. Besides if we rely 100% on robots that means we're asking for another 'did we land on the moon or was it a trick?' conspiricy. I mean you'll get that with Astronauts too, but if you pick the right crew, of diverse enough origin, it becomes ridiculously difficult to argue someone faked it. A Mars landing would settle a lot of things I think.

Still, I'm not going to get REALLY excited until we start viable colonization.

What causes me to facepalm is that you didn't realize writing the word 'butts' separated from 'black holes' only by the word 'and' is just too good a title to pass up ;-D

I really enjoyed the face vs. body segment. I guess that means I'm looking for a long-term relationship right now because the face is always more important than the body (although having a fantastic body is very nice, don't get me wrong).

I know this has been said before in this thread, but it bears repeating, the microwave absorbing metamaterial is not a black hole. Where all this black hole nonsense got started was this quote from the original article (the one that's linked to at the bottom of this article)

A black hole is a region of space from which light cannot escape (that's why it's black).

This defintion is wildly inaccurate. Yes, light can not escape a black hole, but that fact is not why it is a black hole. A black hole is a region where gravity is so strong that it has caused space/time to curve back in upon itself.

Mass bends space and time. This is what gravity is, the bending of space/time. A beam of light traveling near any mass will have it's path deflected by some amount. In a black hole, space/time is so curved, that everything (including light) is drawn towards the center of the black hole (where the singularity resides).

This is why the metamaterial is not a black hole. Gravity is not involved in any way. In the metamaterial, the refractive properties of various materials are used to trap the light.

Can we at least read wikipedia before we post?

the fuck is this xenophobic shit? China doesnt really show any more of a disposition towards arms races than america does, but if this was discovered in america, Im sure you wouldn't instantly assume it was for military applications. In fact, the alternative energy angle is a lot more likely than your kneejerk reaction to a foreign power developing a new tech, because China is pretty much in the process of becoming one of the greenest nations.

Now all anyone would have to do was provide dinner and I'd be completely won over.

Also, I like the theory that men looking for long term relationships focus on the face whereas men after a one night stand focus on the body. Seems to explain why I'm more easily won over by some pretty eyes and a nice smile as opposed to some girl with a low cut top and a short skirt.
