AAHHHHH!!! oh, black holes sound pretty scary too. |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 903 Joined: 17 Jun 2009 | Well that "black hole" concept sounds very useful. And the emotion thing would just be funny. I'd enjoy watching people's as they get more and more worked up about things. |

That's really how they made the black holes. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1217 Joined: 25 Nov 2007 | Man, what happened to those silly things like being self-critical and second-guessing your own decisions and motivations? Now we've got a bowl for that. ...wait a second, my bowl is saying that this topic is getting me agitated. I suppose I'd better go have a lie-down. Also: I'm a face man. I don't discount a nice body, though! ;) |
Muckraker Posts: 267 Joined: 13 Jun 2009 | I read this ever week and it is good as always except one thing: they have invented a black hole? Does it have an extremely high gravity field? Does it absorb light? Does it affect surrounding objects?. No it doesn't. It absorbs microwave radiation. |
Muckraker Posts: 315 Joined: 9 Jun 2009 | The last page seriously reminded me of the Geth. This won't end well. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1885 Joined: 17 Dec 2008 | The microwave hole (not a black hole) showed up in Off-Topic a little while ago, way to miss your cue Lauren. Really, how can we take your section seriously if you don't read every other topic on the site to make sure it hasn't been done before.* The EmoBowl and watch seem like more of a toy than a tool. Most people are capable of making decisions, and they don't need a pretty bowl to tell them their stressed. I would just use it for the mesmerizing factor. |

Well, microwaves generated by a microwave are absorbed by the water, fats, and sugars in the food, and converted into heat energy, thus cooking your food. So, the microwave isn't really capturing microwaves, or absorbing them. The microwaves are converted into energy, which is different than being absorbed and trapped in a metamaterial. |

I agree, essentially. But "Scientists create first Artificial Black Hole" reads better than "Scientists Create MetaMaterial that Absorbs Microwaves and Traps Them, Which is Like a Black Hole, But Not Really." :P It's essentially just a lure to draw readers in, give them something recognizable to compare the concept to, and teach them something in the process. |

It's useless, Admire. Any robot worth his microchips can tell you are a flimsy human due to your thermal signature and whatnot. (And I will continue to call you Admire so I can make stupid puns on demand.) China, eh? Chinese discoveries suprisingly often end up with their scientists shuffling their feet and pretending to look under their desks for a pencil when asked for hard evidence. Was this one really confirmed? I, being a very busy person, cannot go assert this myself, for I have just acquired the rope I require to retrieve a very important water chip and must soon be elsewhere. |

It's mainly the tone of the last paragraph that got me to facepalm. The danger of masses collapsing to singularities isn't in that they are dark. Metamaterials are really cool, and though the misleading catchy title is understandable (even expected in news articles), the article didn't read like the distinction had been noticed. EDIT: It's not that the column is bad; it just needs more explication and clarification.

Personality will, of course, be given due consideration once we get chatting. :-) I love the idea of using metamaterials for invisibility. I wouldn't mind having my very own invisibility cloak. On that note, would the materials work if they had a certain fluidity to them, like fabric? Or would they have to be solid to get the right effect? |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1624 Joined: 28 Nov 2007 | #1: Generally speaking I have my doubts about China having done this unless it can be demonstrated on a more practical scale. Not that I doubt that they could, I mean they are involved in a technological arms race and military build up, and the reasons why they would be interested in such things are obvious... BUT I would think that if this was truely accomplished at any practical level I wouldn't be hearing about it on The Escapist before anywhere else, and there would be more of an overall reaction. #2: Besides let's be honest, anyone familiar with "Pear Chan" even indirectly or simply the whole way people take face shots/pics of themselves over the internet is going to be a big wary about judging a person just from their face. #3: The Emobowl sounds like someone re-invented the Mood Ring. It might be a fad for aging Baby Boomers but other than that I can't see it catching on. I have been wrong before however. #4: Sending robots to Mars is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. To be honest I think I'm more wiht Asimov (in his writings) than the guys who did the recent "Battlestar Galactica" or "Terminator" when it comes to my opinions on Robots. But really, I think we haven't been there until an actual person lands. Besides if we rely 100% on robots that means we're asking for another 'did we land on the moon or was it a trick?' conspiricy. I mean you'll get that with Astronauts too, but if you pick the right crew, of diverse enough origin, it becomes ridiculously difficult to argue someone faked it. A Mars landing would settle a lot of things I think. Still, I'm not going to get REALLY excited until we start viable colonization. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 122 Joined: 1 Nov 2009 | Very interesting. Hope the black hole doesn't become "weaponized" in the future... No matter how badass that would be. The robots on Mars bit kinda dissapointed me. I was hoping we'd do a maned mission next. |

Pseduo, pop culture caricature of feminist, maybe. In any case, I just read something about how when men look at a woman, some look at the body and some look at the face. All women look directly at the package. I'll have to check my RSS feeds to find the article.
What causes me to facepalm is that you didn't realize writing the word 'butts' separated from 'black holes' only by the word 'and' is just too good a title to pass up ;-D |

It could be 'armorized': turned into a defense against lasers: re-routing the incoming energy weapon's beam, capturing it in a labyrinthine maze which it can never escape from. What would really suck is if you used a teleporter and accidentally locked onto a scrap of this stuff that was just sitting around! |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2793 Joined: 28 May 2009 | I really enjoyed the face vs. body segment. I guess that means I'm looking for a long-term relationship right now because the face is always more important than the body (although having a fantastic body is very nice, don't get me wrong). |
Anonymous Source Posts: 3 Joined: 22 Feb 2009 | I know this has been said before in this thread, but it bears repeating, the microwave absorbing metamaterial is not a black hole. Where all this black hole nonsense got started was this quote from the original article (the one that's linked to at the bottom of this article)
This defintion is wildly inaccurate. Yes, light can not escape a black hole, but that fact is not why it is a black hole. A black hole is a region where gravity is so strong that it has caused space/time to curve back in upon itself. Mass bends space and time. This is what gravity is, the bending of space/time. A beam of light traveling near any mass will have it's path deflected by some amount. In a black hole, space/time is so curved, that everything (including light) is drawn towards the center of the black hole (where the singularity resides). This is why the metamaterial is not a black hole. Gravity is not involved in any way. In the metamaterial, the refractive properties of various materials are used to trap the light. Can we at least read wikipedia before we post? |
Beat Writer Posts: 216 Joined: 15 Apr 2009 | predicting a name change for the emobowl and emowrits or whatever. and this tech would be much more accurate if it was an implant that could measure hormonal changes as well as pulse.... oh and what a very original reaction to autonomous robots. really? suggesting that autonomous robots might kill all the humans? dont you think someone might jsut put in a variable saying "no nuclear holocaust"??? oh, and to back up the point of the guy before me, according to hawkings, a black hole is a point of infinite density, ie an infinite amont of mass taking up absolutely zero space. so.... yeah its not realy a black hole |

the fuck is this xenophobic shit? China doesnt really show any more of a disposition towards arms races than america does, but if this was discovered in america, Im sure you wouldn't instantly assume it was for military applications. In fact, the alternative energy angle is a lot more likely than your kneejerk reaction to a foreign power developing a new tech, because China is pretty much in the process of becoming one of the greenest nations. |

Also, I like the theory that men looking for long term relationships focus on the face whereas men after a one night stand focus on the body. Seems to explain why I'm more easily won over by some pretty eyes and a nice smile as opposed to some girl with a low cut top and a short skirt. |

I don't really see the point. I think I could tell if I was feeling stressed of my heart rate was up without the use of jewelry. |
