Pocket Gamer Report: The DSi to Be Replaced?

Nintendo kicks off the New Year with some seriously potent DS2 rumor fuel.

Interesting... but the article does make a point, this 'DS2' doesn't sound like its going to be an entire revolution of a handheld console in the way that the original DS was.

Still, I'll keep my eye on this particular news for more info in the future...

Oh god. I can't afford to buy any more of these.

I'm still on the DS lite!

*cry* its not fair! I havn't even got a DS to start off with and now they are planning to replace it!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! my world is ending.

Ok im just being mad. I think it doesn't look to bad and i would certainly one day like to get my hands on one.

i forgot where i read this from, but i recall some guy at nintendo saying the next system will need to implement "high resolution graphics" or something along those lines, and a larger screen again
maybe we will see a jump from n64 graphics to low end GCN graphics

"Satoru Iwata has spoken for the first time about the Nintendo DS's successor, saying that a new handheld will feature high-spec graphics and motion sensing technology. "

HOW COULD I FORGET THE MOTION SENSOR TECHNOLOGY ON THE GO!?!?

I'm still using the Original DS.

I've been planning on upgrading to the lite, but I'll save up for the DS2 instead now. Hope the games will still be awesome.

The fact that it's very likely going to be a completely pointless gimmick never to be used again after their E3 presentation and only serve as a bullet point on the back of the box saying "does everything a wii can!".

Same here. I think I'll skip the DSi and wait for this new one to come out... Seeing as I'm skint and won't be able to afford a new one for at least a year anyway...

Interesting.
Ill end up getting it as usual but they better put a GBA slot back in...or at least release GBA Games for download.

Yup, I'm still happy with my DS lite. Although, if it looks good, I may have to get this new one...

It's about time.

The DS has been dead for a long time with less than 3 worthwhile releases each year.

hah me too... I really dont like the ds though. I like gba and psps better

How long before they release DS2lite?

I've only got my Lite last September, I wish Nintendo would slow down just a little bit.

My feelings on the DSi and its currently unnamed crappy Summer blockbuster sequel can be summed up in one picture:

gee i was going to buy a dsi but if they are making a new one again i might wait but i'll buy a dsi b4 a psp

I have officaly given up on the DS for this reason...

2004 - Original DS
2006 - DSlite
2008-2009 DSi
2010 - DSi XL...

TOO MANY DS!!! I predict

2011 - DS2
2013 - DS2lite
2014 - DS2i
2016 - DS2i XL...

:"(

Hell My GBA Micro is awesome!

Now think of this will all the new add ons and thngs like that. You thought is was weird when people would shout into it or blow into it, but now they will be waving it around and making faces into it to play the game

There will not be dual screens in a book-like lid configuration.

You heard that here first.

If the console does indeed have motion sensing capabilities, the angle at which the screens are laid out in a DS would prevent it from being shaken efficiently, since the rotating upper screen would eventually receive damage to the hinge (already the classic breaking point for the few defective DSs).

So the one thing that is at risk of going away if they go down this route is the dual screen configuration. I'm not sure that I will miss it. It did open up a lot of interesting interface opportunities, but if they move to a widescreen format and touchscreen-slash-motion controls, I just can't see the DS screen config working.

On the other hand, Nintendo is always very thoughtful when it comes to making consoles that will resist heavy use by younger players, so I'm also expecting another way to protect the touchscreen. Perhaps it will flip open? Perhaps it will have a lid that opens all the way and tucks away at the bottom of the device during play? Perhaps the screen will turn 180 degrees to a safe position?

Otherwise? It's a HD Nintendo portable with the same graphics chip the Zune HD is using (was that ever confirmed?) and motion sensing capabilities. What's not to like?

They just keep going x.x

Slow down? In late 2010 it will have been 6 years since the last handheld device came out.

This is a completely new console, right?

WAHOO!

I bet it will have mp3 player built in. Also a 5mp (or higher) camera with a flash. Definately downloadable games, maybe even an official emulator with all he old nes, snes classics available.

The 3d graphics of the DS were nice, if a little grainy.

I hope I can play all my old DS titles on it.

If I'll be able to afford it, win.

If not, damn.

Isn't there a DS LL coming out? I saw one in Taiwan. The Salesperson said it had a larger screen, but same resolution, so games were going to appear blurry.

Another crappy installment to a subpar handheld.

just keeps printing money, doesn't it Nintendo?

Oh man.

Just imagine playing WarioWare on one of those things.

Good, maybe I can get a DSi on the cheap then.

As much as I'd like to mock Nintendo for re-releasing the same thing over and over again with a small amount of differences, this actually looks pretty cool. Sure, I won't be able to play GBA games, but it's a small price to pay. Maybe, if I save up my money for 80 years without buying anything, I'll actually be able to afford one!

I will be SO fucking pissed if this happens... but if GS3 and Pokemon HG/SS are released in N. America for DSi I don't care.

Ohh great. Another toy put out by Nintendo that will be under utilized. I mean seriously Pokemon, which is still probably one of their biggest hand held IPs still looks like it's being played on a slightly improved SNES. Look at their latest incarnation that's coming out. Holly crap they finally updated it with some new version of Mode 7.

Seriously it's like ever since N64 they are too afraid to push their systems. The Cube had alot of wasted potential, and they were so focused on the motion control that they decided to not even bother with making the Wii much better then a PS2 graffics wise.

Its great and all that this new DS will have superior graffics and lots of bells and whistles. To bad most of it will go to waste becasue it has the Nintendo name on it.

I love the DS, it's suitable to many genres, even FPS (see Moon. It's controls are very good). I'd love to see it getting better graphics.

I'll be watching the DS2, but if this device tries to do to much its probably going to have problems.

Or it could be the greatest thing to ever happen to handheld gaming, who knows.

Way to screw over everyone who just bought the DSi, big 'N'.

Look, guys, you've just gotten to the point where there's something worth looking at on DSiWare, you still haven't suggested you (or anyone else) have a clue how to integrate the cameras into games; can you give it a rest for a little longer?

(sigh)

and for curiosity sake, which handheld makes the grade? Just curious, as I see no real driving point to buy a PsP or iPhone over a DS, especially if the only selling points to the other 2 were just graphics on one, and motion on the other, but a lot less games that are ACTUALLY good.

My hopes is that this is more of a multi-media device with mp3 and streaming movie capabilities, also with plently of downloadable games from nes-64 days (with everything in between)
