The Needles: Don't Blame Canada

Thanks, Yanks, but our copyright laws are doing just fine without your help.

I'd be willing to bet that most Canadians who pirate games do so from American websites anyway. Is there any difference between the software we buy in Canada, vs. the software available in the U.S.? (I mean of course apart from the French translations.) Because most DRM is dependent on the software, and we use the same "NTSC" configuration.

Finally, some reinforcements on the copyright front! Now all we need is NAFTA too fail and we're in the clear!

Remember Their Copyright laws are worth more then our Humanity laws....or however that went. I live in Canada and we have laws to keep people out of Movie theaters with cameras. Does the states do that. I dunno but a lot of cam rips come from the states i assume.

Off Topic: the only thing i hate more then a yank telling me whats good for me is when one says i have an accent or speak "Canadian" when they say Buddy and Eh more then me.

The 301 report is a joke anyway, it's always been a regurgitation of what the recording/pharma industries have wanted. Even USTR employees don't take the thing seriously.

Heehee, Canadian Copyright laws for the win.

American here: I am disappointed in my country's copyright laws, to be frank. A lot of them make little sense, and so many are obviously the result of intense lobbying. It's really annoying when business interests matter more to your country than individuals' rights. I'm sure that this happens to an extent in other countries also, but it still ticks me off.

I'm pretty sure we have laws against movie recording in a theater. I used to work in a movie theater, and we were told to report anyone recording. Honestly, though, it would be fairly easy for someone to sneak in a camera. They would just have to conceal it in a bag or something.

Nice to see Canada sticking to it's guns.

Over here in the UK, we tend to roll over when the US barks...

I'm in support of the pirate parties in around the world. They are legitimate political parties lobbying for a copyright reform. The laws are too strict, not too lax, and they should be changed. I'll believe the government is sensible and the country is free when it's legal to download music without money being involved, when data is a right.

Goddamn Yanks just can't handle us being different can they?

Same here. And the sad part is that most Americans just don't give a damn about this, yet the whole of the U.S. will still be yelled at for it...

I hope you realize that at least some Americans (like me) are actually disturbed by the actions of our country. Canada is definitely in the right, here. The problem is that the US probably won't have any useful copyright reform for a while, as the government is controlled by business. :(

While I can see the point of the article, and agree that the US copywrite laws are too tough, but I get the feeling that Canada would act a bit differently if they were the ones producing all the entertainment products that were getting pirated.

The government itself does not produce the products at all.

Once again, America does not have a say in what other countries do. If they have a problem with it, well, tough luck. And ooohhhh nooooo! Canada is on a bad list! For copyright laws, the most important laws in the world!

I'm sorry, but the only interesting thing I got out of this is that there is a stereotype the Canadians hate Toronto?

Wtf? I mean, sure the Leafs suck and all, but why Toronto? I'd figure that someplace in Quebec would get the hate...

Home freeee~

I'll blame Canada, not for any specific reason, just cuz I'm American and I can....alienating other races and cultures one country at a time.

We don't hate Quebec, they hate us.

... because Toronto is as American as a place can be in canada without actually being in America.

Basically this.

Quebec hates the rest of Canada, not the other way around. (ie. Quebec Referendum)

It's a Western Canadian thing and it's because Toronto tends to have a "Center of the Universe" attitude. For example you mention the Leafs, as a Canadian I can tune into a national broadcast of Hockey Night in Canada, and the whole thing is all about the Leafs.

for a deeper meaning you have to look at politics. Where the US is strongly divided between the liberal/conservative gong show, in Canada it's simple a matter of East vs West. A federal election can be won entirely on Ontario and Quebec, so we usually get federal governments that strongly represent these two provincs while Western issues get the shaft.

Makes sense... considering I'm American and the only Canadian city I've been in is Toronto.

I can honestly say that I was not expect such a deep answer for such a simple question.

But..but... South Park told me to blame Canada!

The closest thing we have to a gun in Canada is a hockey stick painted to look like one.

Funny, I always thought Alberta was the America of Canada, specifically Calgary.

OT: Hmm, It's like that big nice kid who stands up for the weak. Thank CCIA, we appreciate you doing what our government refuses to.(You know, grow balls and man up.)

No, Alberta is Canada's deep south. Oil, conservatism, cowboys and Christians as far as the eye can see.

Totonto is just big, grey, and dull.

Pa-lez, if I took someone that doesn't know anything about borders/sovereignty, they wouldn't be able to tell apart an American city from a Canadian city at all. Our "cultures" are exactly the same. (I'm a Canadian that visits the states regularly btw)

I just want to comment on the fact that the US team beat the Canadian hockey team by 2 goals. Quite the upset.

Out of interest, when you do a day's work, do you expect a day's wage?

OT - Nice one Canada! If you stand up to the US, maybe they'll stop telling us in the UK what to do, too?

It's not gonna happen, but it'd be nice...

but out yanks we have "less" laws then you do but they're more effective and the fact that the backdoor is legal for us canucks using fair use is the foothold for my machinima production if me and the actors need a certain addon or what not for our games so we can get the certain map pack or what not then instead of all of us dropping 15-20 dollars canadian we split the pice equally and one guy buys the add on and the rest download with his account on their system and and limewire is leagall up hear as its "sharing" and a tpp which both are illegal down in the states. i don't have 200$ a year to buy copyright free music to make my profit free entertainment. so you yanks can screw off with your ristrictive laws that don't even work.

p.s. have you thought that maybee the reason we arn't "upping" our copyright laws is cause you're telling us to?
