It may be fictional and all, Susan, but it's still.. Well.. In extremely poor taste. I've read through a few and I really just can't stand it.

And of course I know of the actual reviewers, in fact I've watched several and enjoy them.. But there's reviewers.. And.. Well.. Douchebags.

Sarcastic and harsh people on your internet? It's more likely than you think.

That being said, I've already been enjoying the 1 page articles. That was a great thing to add. I think the grab bag of little goodies style is a good way to do this. Non-subscribers, be they willful or circumstantial, aren't missing out and shouldn't feel screwed, but all the small things add up to a real convenience for those of us who can and want to throw money at the Escapist.

I woke up today to find a nice, shiny badge and all sorts of other perks waiting as a late "thank you" gift for that article I wrote a year back. It gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside ^^

Am I able to pay for this via Mastercard or Visa? I couldn't see anything about payment methods maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.

Yep, you can do both, they where on the payment options when I signed up.

Sweet looks like I'll be getting this tonight!

Please note that no one is losing anything due to the Publisher's Club subscription service, but those that are classy enough to sign up will gain a more enjoyable experience at The Escapist!

Is this a guarantee that video quality will not be diminished for standard users? If so, then good show and good luck. If not, then BAD ESCAPIST! I strongly suspect the former is the case though, so as I said, good show and good luck.

Correct, you will still see the videos exactly as they are now if you do not subscribe. Along with their ads. All those nice, pretty, enjoyable ads. Mmmmmm. I love watching ads, even those flash ones on the forums that slow my computer down a little. Those subscribers are missing out on all the wonderful distractions! http://www.escapistmagazine.com/registration/subscribe

:)

Now you're just being mean, Matt.

Question, with this membership would it be possible to change your name additional times? Likely not but I just figured I'd ask.

EDIT: As a Canadian will I be eligable for some of these contests?

The videos had ADS????
Now seriously, I didn't see many adds on those, maybe because I'm not such a premiere watcher. But I watched all ZP of last 6 months or so. Can't say they ever boithered me. But joined anyway.

Why is there no paypal option? Don't you want my money?

Done and done.

Huzzah!

John Funk:
Wootness. Go team!

And as Kuliani et al have said, you will absolutely not lose anything by not subscribing, so don't worry about that :)

You guys are wussing out. I can't believe you're ignoring my suggesting to make non-subscribers view the site in 8pt Comic Sans. On a lime background.

More seriously, congrats.

I subscribed 15 minutes ago. I haven't gotten any reply yet.
..
*angry face, whatever that looks like*
..
I want my premium user account thingy, now!!!!

I'm sure not planning on re-encoding ALL the videos AGAIN just to lower their quality.

Hah! Great answer!

And I've just subscribed. Figured I've been using this site for long enough time for me to give something back.

I could live without the the new high quality videos but I am so grateful that articles now can be shown in one piece. That alone was worth the price of admission for this escapist.

Awesome, you guys!

Do you guys have a paypal option. I don't have an amazon account and I really would like to join the club!
If no paypal option becomes available... well I may have difficulty signing up for this... *cue sad music*

So, in other words, you're implementing a premium service like IGN did... And IGN lost a bunch of it's users... So you're trying to lose users then I take it? Well, whatever, game news can be had for free elsewhere. Will be a shame to miss out on Rebecca Mayes and Yahtzee though.

You're not losing anything you currently have, as stated in previous posts. You're only gaining new things by purchasing a subscription. If you don't purchase one, you get the same version of Escapist Magazine that you normally see, for free.

Yes, but that's still extremely insulting. Paying for high quality when LRR released theirs for free. Merchandise is the real answer, not gimmicks and marketing ploys like a shiny custom title and access to a secret forum. LRR also does that for free, it's called the LoadingReadyRunners. You EARN access through contests. Merely paying is just a sell-out.

So, how far back does the HQ video go? I'm assuming you haven't gone all the way back to the classic ZPs...

Also, I must say, the big blank space where the ads use the be is kind of noticeable.

Well, go look and find out. What was the first ZP to be published on the Escapist?

I won't be getting this. There aren't even that many ads on this site, and I'm fine with watching stuff in standard def.
I think it's a good call though, and it'll probably help the site, so I'm all for it.

(Probably has been answered before, but I don't feel like looking through all the posts, so direct me to the answer if so):

Do you loose the badge when you unsubscribe?
How early are we talking about... with the previews thing?

Aaaaand I'll probably think up some more questions later

EDIT: Do you loose the title when you unsubscribe?
EDIT2: Can you change your title or is it a one-at-a-time kind of thing?

Great idea, and I hope it works out for the best. I won't be signing up myself as the benefits don't particularly appeal to me (and assuming the promise is kept that not being a paying member doesn't screw you out of something good).

BlueInkAlchemist:
Fantastic incentives for anybody who wants to support the Escapist.

Thanks for all the quality entertainment and thought-provoking articles you deliver!

Wow, you're an ridiculously awesome contributor!

Well deserved, I must say.

OT: You had me at "membership", Escapist.

Havta be honest, three months ago or earlier and this wouldn't even have been a question for me, I'd already be signed up.. now, though? I have to think on it. I've seen too many changes that seem to indicate to me that the Escapist no longer pursues its core mission as an end to itself, but rather sees it as the means that it's profitable. That you think an audience panel would be a good idea just seems to add weight to this thought, and recent offerings suggest an increased focus toward the lowest common denominator so as to increase flow-through, and frankly, I tend not to like that sort of coverage.

That said, getting *on* that audience panel might be useful to bring the focus back, so that's tempting. Most of the other stuff though really doesn't hold any significant appeal for me.

So... I'll think about it. Who knows, maybe the audience panel will make good enough changes without me that I'll become more interested in supporting the Escapist again.

Of course, throw in a PDF magazine like used to be done.. even if it's only done monthly.. and I'd pay double.

Paying money to get rid of ads that otherwise generate money in a similar fashion is a sell-out? I guess it's more of a BUY out really. I'm still firmly of the opinion that anyone who uses the phrase "sell out" to mean something other than "We are out of stock because we sold it all" is naive in the extreme.

Some people just want to be mad about things. There's a great item from SA where a Sim City advisor says, "I'm angry! Angry about cities!" That's basically it in a nutshell. You're angry because one group of people did one thing and one other group of people did another, both acting out of what they think is their best interest.

Is high quality video even a big deal? I bought this for no ads and to support the site. I suspect few people were complaining about the video quality before it was offered to them at a premium. It's the same gripe with DLC.

Things aren't free, except for, of course, the 99% of everything on the Escapist that you're still getting for free. This is an optional convenience fee, and I LOVE convenience.

I'm sure as hell not doing this, mostly because I'm not an especially active member over here, but partly because it seems like profiteering with some of the recent moves on the Escapist and comes across as downright insulting to be asked to pay for quality and full RSS. At least to me.

But I can predict a big problem: Bannings.

I've glanced at users getting banned for rather small infractions. But if they're paying for a service and their account is banned from access, that's a pretty big liability train you're standing in front of. Sure, the users could not be douches, but asking someone on an internet forum to not be a douche is like asking the sun not to rise.

And you can't always expect all mods to be 100% fair. People are people.

Yikes... Worst wording ever.

Ah, I was wondering why all the people with special titles had gotten them italicised recently...

As for suggestions, well... If you let premium members view site traffic figures I would sign up right now. It's just something I've always been overly curious about, and I know it isn't going to happen.

Although, to be honest, I'm a little concerned about long-term effects on the community. Will this result in a slew of posts saying "Well, you're not an Eeebity Bleebity Bleeb, therefore your opinion is invalid" months down the line? I'm not sure I like the idea of a clique you have to pay in order to join.

Yes, I'm going to join this as soon as my credit card clears in a couple of days. I've always wanted to contribute somehow to this site, and as an offer, this is really cheap.

To those complaining about it, you don't have to join it you know.

I'm happy to contribute to such a fantastic website. Hell, I might even donate more, if I have any spare cash handy.

Dammit Nim, I'm the token Irish guy!

Ah, never mind. It wasn't the title I wanted anyway. You'll all see that one soon.

A note to subscribers, don't be too certain that you'll be using the Audience Panel for getting LRR ideas out there. That's what THEIR forums is for. Video Suggestions go here. Be prepared.

What is this, Loading Ready La Reistance?

The banning thing mentioned by another poster is an interesting question, I suppose, but doesn't a ban just affect the forums. Wouldn't all the features remain intact? I haven't a clue, I've never been in that situation.

Just joined ;)

Talking from experience here. Not. Fun.

Yes, I donated (a small amount) to an online game podcast in the past. It gave -limited- benefits like an added forum to get unedited podcasts ("in the raw", etc). Just some neat added bonuses.. But then the admins became extreme jerks. Quite a few people, who happened to be "Starbreakers" (the name for the contributors) ended up being pushed back, some choosing to leave, their Starbreaker status still intact, but just not caring.. And some were lead to some rather fierce arguments and subsequent bannings.

Have fun, anyone who gets a ban as a subscriber. Just because you paid money, doesn't mean you'll be treated as a god. Besides, $5 was a minimum where I was. $20? For some gimmicks?

@Eudaemonian, no, not quite a "Resistance", but at least there are websites that DO good things. Merchandise is a perfect way to contribute to a community site, you're getting something from it! Other things shouldn't have to be paid for. Several places have high quality as STANDARD.

Eudaemonian:

You have to understand one of the main gripes coming from the Runners base right now; LRR offered their videos in high resolution video for a long time before the migration over to the Escapist, and now several of the loyal and long-time fans are feeling cheated because they're being put into a position where they pretty much have to pay for something that they've been getting free for years.

While the "you don't lose anything you already have" argument is valid and does hold up, you guys have to understand that in the eyes of the LRR fans they did lose something here, and they aren't happy about it. And understandably so.

You know what I don't need more of? Coffee cups, t-shirts that don't come in tall, and nicknacks to junk up my desk!

Merchandise is one way to go, but if you read the article here, no one's really sure how to finance this kind of content. The web isn't a place where one size fits all. Opening new revenue streams is a good idea.

As for high quality video being standard on some sites, I'm sure it is. Should all sites have what some sites have? The logic just doesn't hold up. High quality video costs money. You're already getting the content of the video for free, and now you're angry that it isn't shinier?

Get real. Internet media producers need food badly. I see no reason to fault them for trying to make a living.

Er, I mean absolutely no offense to the LRR crew (who is awesome) or their fanbase, but it doesn't seem that hard to recognize that the Escapist puts out a lot more content than LRR did back in the day, for a much bigger audience. Putting out high quality streams of one video a week costs a hell of a lot less than putting out many videos every week for hundreds of thousands of viewers.

My thoughts exactly.

They're trying to make it seem as though very little will change as a result of this, yet making a 'walled garden'?

And they call The Escapist pretentious...

I'm probably not going to join. I'll just buy merchandise instead to support the Escapist.

How does Warcry stay up with ads being the only source of revenue?
