The "higher quality" of the videos acctually looks worse to be honest, the screen is just bigger. Plus.... yahtzee.... in HD...... it's a slideshow with very simple images on it.... wtf.

although the custom title thing does sound pretty awsome.

I would join, but lack of credit card and money prevents, me from doing so.

However is there any chance of a paypal option being included using my debit card?

You can use a debit card with Amazon, which is what the Escapist are using to handle payments for the Premium membership. So it should work, I buy stuff from Amazon all the time using my debit card.

Very good, and enjoy your Title.

Okay, can someone please tell me how to change my title?

I looked everywhere on my bloody profile and can't do see it.

Go to your profile, and it is under "Subscription and Benefits"

Question which must be answered: Will the premium features be affected if my account gets suspended/banned/deleted?

Not unless you do something so terrible that we actually have to disable your account completely. That's very very rare though. Posting porn would do it, for example.

Publisher's Club members don't get any special reprieve from moderation though. All normal rules still apply.

Wouldn't this get into sticky legal situations as you're restricting access to a service that's been payed for? If someone posts porn you could hide behind the law as there are people under 18 who browse the site. Legally though, if someone hurts someones feelings and their account is suspended you have no legal recourse to bar them access from the service they payed for.

I'm no lawyer though.

Sadly, yes they do.

I'd know, I was in that situation. Hence why I refuse to sign up for paid memberships on internet communities. I'll gladly DONATE or buy merchandise, but I will not buy into premium service gimmicks. A gaming podcast I used to listen to and contribute to, I donated the minimum amount that gains "Starbreaker" status, raw unedited podcast episodes, behind the scenes stuff. BASIC extras. Still not safe from being banned or anything though.

Damnit, I really am in two minds about this.

This is a great site and the people who work for/on it really do deserve support for it. I completely support the idea.

On the other hand I can go ages without posting due to commitments, new games etc. and sometimes get annoyed enough at people on the forums to consider leaving them permanently.

I have until the 21st to decide if I want the snazzy deal it seems.

You have word for word quoted my mind. I have found myself lurking a lot more for...various reasons.

I reckon I will cave though. The custom tag is just too tempting, amongst other things.

I dunno.

I just don't know.

Every time I try to type out an explanation as to why I'm not really thrilled about this, it always comes off as a stupid, trivial thing when I read it back; a complaint that could be explained away very rationally in just one or two optimistic sentences.

And yet.

I'm still not thrilled about it. It's a year's membership that's less than twenty cents a week, and somehow I'm not on board with this.

My biggest reason for joining would probably be the taking part in focus groups etc. I really want to contribute to giving feedback on the escapist and this is probably a more scientific/sensible way to do that than, say, ranting in a forum.

Although... I'd probably feel obliged to *shudder* make friends with some of the community.

edit: also, I don't get the point of HD if they're going to mainly do cartoons, I mean who cares? Whilst I'd love to have Doomsday Arcade on my iphone I don't care for "A good knights tale" or "I hit it with my axe" which as far as I can tell are the only thing that's going to benefit... well... maybe LRR and ENN but really I don't watch that for the way it looks. If it's going to work it'll need more content like DA and "There will be brawl" which will benefit from it. I might have to create some myself... maybe enter the next film festival... we'll see...

Hmm, twenty cents a week? Hardly an expensive venture and certainly worth the perks. Nonetheless might I suggest those who subscribe be allotted a feature to change their username? Perhaps limit the frequency this may be performed however it would be a benefit to those of us who have been members a long portion of time and do not fancy having to create a new account.

SachielOne:
Get a Paypal payment option up, and I'll be all over this.

That's a good idea. :)

I myself will give it some thought. I like the Escapists, but I don't like having a paid commitment to it (membership). If I stop liking it for whatever reason, I want to be able to turn tail and walk away. ('Cept I do like it here.)

I'll think about it.

I don't have any reasonable way of giving you my money (unless you pay for plane tickets to wherever you are) but for what it's worth, if there is any site worth of my ten smackers, believe me, it's this one.

I may consider this. I just need to see if I have the money. I'd be glad to support the site though, the Escapist is just really cool in general. Wallets might disagree.

Well, I'd be paying with a Llyods TSB visa card, do you accept that card type?. Also I'm British and I'll be using British currency (£) do you accept that currency and what would the price be with this currency... with the different exchange rates and all. Also can I pay for the full year in one whole rather then having to mess about with the whole 0.20p a week thing... because I don't know if I'll have 0.20p in my bank a week. Also how do I do all this?. I hope this gets a reply soon as I'm itching to join and help out here and The Escapist.

Y'know what? I'm guessing those "focus groups" will just be a forum thread or IRC-like chat. It'll still be a wave of text. Unless they've pulled something magical out of their asses at the last minute..

If the high-quality streams were available on XBox Live then I would be all over it, but as it is, I don't see the value add...

I got a mail from them and this stood out IMO.

"...But only if you subscribe by April 21st. After that, you'll be just like everyone else. And who wants that?"

This is the reason why I won't join. They want to make me feel special and are practically saying I'm stupid if I don't join the Club.

This may be a bit rude to say, but:

Up Yours, Publisher's Club. I won't chain myself(Read: pay 20 cents a week) to a Club I'll rarely visit anyway.

Dude, it's a joke. Seriously, lighten up.

If you don't want to join, that's perfectly ok, but getting your knickers in a twist over a bit of humor seems a bit out of place.

Sooooooo, what? You weren't making enough revenue with all the ads, events, and ZP merchandise sales?

You have not sold me on this. You'll get nothing from me. If I want a custom title I'll freaking earn it! Not buy it.

I'm also not too pleased about that very crude peer pressure-esque humor telling us we'll be like everyone else. It's shenanigans like this and the bullshit we have to deal with in the forums due to the Escapist's rapid expansion letting in a massive amount of people who can't string coherent sentences together and don't know how to post.

Almost every day I grow more and more tired of this site and its antics. I now see why a lot of prolific posters that were around when I first joined either decided to stop posting or get themselves banned.

Considering how much of this site's content is based upon or contains humor, it really should be par for the course. It's like being surprised at Yahtzee being sarcastic, or MovieBob being Bostonian.

I threw my ten bucks into the ring, it's a great deal.

My problem:

I know where to go to change my custom title, but when I get there the type bar is still unusable and it says I need to join to use it. I did join, got the badge and everything, how long does it take for the custom title thing to unlock? Or do I have to log out and long back in?

alright within the next few days I'll think about this I may sign up with Amazon... oh well

I am absolutely going to do this. It's something that I didn't even know that I've been waiting for.

TylerBaumbarger:

I think it's best to leave their money to them, they no what they're doing.

OT: I wouldd really appreciate more payment options e.g. Paypal - else I'm not able to pay it. Amazon's not allowing our English credit cards in.

I have no credit card, but I have a Payzonemoney.com account, would that work?

It works for Steam anyway, used it a couple of times.

Ah well, at least I'll be better than the other plebs. And I'll get to make a title!

Also, QUESTION. Is it a yearly payment then or a monthly one because it shows both but I'm just wondering if that is just to show the price in perspective? Just want to know, bankwise.

Question Here!

Is the only way of paying using Amazon?

-Thanks

P.S. I live in NZ. That shouldn't stop me right?

im wondering what will happen if someone subscribes and gets banned. are they just not allowed on the forums or do they lose access from the premium stuff as well?

edit: im asking cause im planning on getting banned in a ridiculous way.
edit 2: above was sarcasm.

as addendum to his question will it be possible to pay trough paypal for those non creditcard folks? (who live in a country with no prepaid creditcards)

Th.. That's been brought up and answered multiple times.. Does anyone at all read prior to posting? Answers are most likely already there. o.o

It's not a right. If you're on grounds to be banned and you have your shiny title, badge and all, g'bye subscription too~

But if your subscription -ends-, you lose your title but keep the badge. Simple enough?

Aww if only I had a way to pay for this. I would jump all over this in an instant if I could.

John Funk:
Wootness. Go team!

And as Kuliani et al have said, you will absolutely not lose anything by not subscribing, so don't worry about that :)

Considering every avatar you've had is Gundam related I'm surprised you chose something Pokemon related.

Also do all you employees and contributors get this free?

Got my problem solved with the Custom Title. I was able to do it after I logged out and then logged back in.

psh. i dont have time to read 5 pages of crazy forum posters! that is madness! THIS IS SPARTAAAAA!!!!!!!! but thanks for answering my question.

Then.. Uh.. Flick through it like any normal person? Look for the yellow names. They're the staff, they've most likely answered it. Common courtesy and overall forum etiquette. Read the damn posts before yours, your question was most likely answered. LOGIC~

While your argument is mostly correct in theory, there is no site on the internet today, not even the IGNs of the world, that have a 100% fill rate all of the time. Meaning, 100% of the ad inventory is always sold. Though, I must admit, it'd sure be nice to have that "problem" here at The Escapist. Even if it does make my life rather hellish. :)

I'm just saying, advertisers are less likely to work with sites with lower success rates and less ad views means less revenue from that source. If I wind up being right about the losses, I want Russ to buy me a puppy.

Ads are bought in lumps of hundreds of thousands or millions at a time so our success rates are not at all effected by a few thousand less ad impressions.

Trust me when I say that all possible scenarios have been thought of. We don't exactly take our main source of revenue lightly, and as such wouldn't jeopardize of all of our contributors' and employees' livelihoods.
