Stolen Pixels #188: Test Your Shooter-IQ!

How much do you know about modern FPS games?

Let's see...
+0 for giving a crap.
-0 for the money I payed...

So I have 0 IQ?
Fffffffffuck.

Rolling punchline again, i see? The final one is hilarious.

I agree that all shooters are just too samey. I actually have an idea for game deconstructing a few of genre's most annoying cliches (especially the "disembodied genocidal gun" type of a protagonist). Yes, i hate brown blandness that much.

+3...Damn it.

Am I the only one who answered "D" on all of them?

TheFacelessOne:

Not the only onebut close. There was one question that was definitly E or maybe Z

well looks like i got a +1 on the last shooter i bought pitty i cant throw it away it was a waste of $5.00 for me darn digital copy's

It's funny to see games marketed as realistic when they have a single person going up against an entire alien race and is able to nearly instintaniously recover from injuries.

I want to see a FPS level in a volcano where you have to avoid the lava and falling rocks.

Awesome comic, Shamus.

Fallout 3, Resistance 2, Red Faction : Guerrila. I've never even played Resistance 2 or Red Faction : Guerilla and I still recognised them. If that's "everything looks the same", then... Wow, that looks pretty different.

Damn Shamus, between this and your last one, I'd honestly think you weren't even trying any more.

Even though the keyboard and mouse controls are more sensitive, I definitely enjoy fps games from the couch with a gamepad. The exception being metroid prime with its awesome wii point and shoot scheme.

Shamus have you tried Natural Selection? Because that is a Shooter with Base Building if your playing as the Marines of course! Most Awesome shooter of the good old days. And they are developing NS with the current Source Engine! \o/

0. Yay, me?

Okay, that's not much of a response, is it?

I'm not very into recent FPS's. I've played them at other peoples' places, but never for very long. I'll stick with my Goldeneye and Metroid Prime, thanks.

That made me chuckle XD I got 3 sadly....heh

Lost cause?

Also, as a side note...Copyright 2008? We gone back in time?

Ah! ninjaed once again, bummer!

And shamus, you should know that brown is the new black.

Instead of simply being overcome by the toxic gas?

His spoiler warning broadcast this week was funny, so his humor's going somewhere. "Wrex, do you need a hug?"

+2 for giving a crap.
-120 for the money I payed.
I think I may be retarded.

Long live Codename: Eagle and its "ever-so-slightly-overpowered" magnum.

I like shooters, too. But I like good shooters. Ones with a good story in its single-player mode, and ones that emphasize cooperation in multi-player.

I'd suggest you try out TF2, if you haven't already...it has some nice red and blue in it :P

So this cartoon is from two years ago and all you had to do to make it current was put a 2 on the end of Modern Warfare and Bad Company?
Now how's that for progress!

I think that was the point.

He's showing how little things seem to have changed.

lol you got me good.

Well, there could be a timer, but everyone knows that as long as you don't touch the lava, you'll be perfectly safe.

Now that I've distracted you, I make my escape.

Brilliant way of getting the point across :)

Shamus Young:
"Xcom: Generic Agent shoots alien dudes from behind chest-high walls in brown corridors"

Don't forget the cloned backgrounds, the technicolor clone henchmen and the god awful vehicle/escort missions that seem to just be pulled from one old game and shoved into a newer one.

Awww, I was actually hoping for a real scoring system

I know the first two were right, but who gives a crap about low-res McBoringLandscape in the third?

Lets see:

+1/2 for games I give a crap.

-0 for money wasted.

Ha! Good thing I borrow all my games from my friends.

Shamus Young:
They're all fun. It's just that they all feel like they came off the same assembly line.

You are not being fair to Fallout 3 on this. Apologize, or I will put you on my black list of "people who mess with Fallout 3".

That list is going to 47, once I have the money.

Replace bolded bit with "with the brand new, 100% owned by the developers, Spark engine!" and you'll be perfectly accurate. (By the way, they've released several builds of the map editor and the Engine Test for pre-orderers already)

Ever played multiplayer C&C Renegade (or Renegade X, it's unofficial UT3 remake)? Fun, if hard not to get run over.

I think the colorful scenery and enemies was one of the reasons I liked Halo so much. At least it didn't try to depress you when you were trying to have fun...

As much as I despise Halo 2 (the pacing killed the game for me, just couldn't care after bringing down the Scarab) I have to admit, you have a very good point.

How could you neglect Half Life in the category of "Shooty McNoncharacter VS. the aliens"? It's what inspired that entire movement!

ah that makes sense why its taking so long than thanks for the heads up ^-^

I kina like the first picture... I would play one shooter that takes place there. Only one. A good one. When the time comes. That time has not come yet.

"War never changes"?

Maybe, but graphics get more brown!
