Stolen Pixels #189: Eeevil!

Is Ubisoft killing PC gaming?

This actually made me laugh. Very good!

Well, I know I wouldn't cry if they stopped releasing games for PC. I mean, the only reason I played ACII at all was... well, I had nothing better to do with my gamepad. Persona 4 is soon-to-be-finished, and I wouldn't have had games to play while laying down on the couch. Or in bed.

Still, Fable is Xbox-only now, GoW is Xbox-only now and I don't hear anyone complaining about it.

Hahaha! Lovely!

The Overlord is back!

And I think Ubi's attempt is not ill-intentioned, but lacks in finesse... Anyone making a game is in their own right to try and protect its creation. Whether that's done at the expanse of honest players or not is a whole other debate, but they had the right to do what they've done.
Problem is, they should've done it right, too.

Ubisoft is still smalltime to Activision evil.

This is a favorite for sure! Thank you!

Good stuff, I actually laughed out loud at this one. Ubisoft really is that evil

Nicely done, Shamus. I approve.

I think Ubi should just go fuck themselves.

Sorry, but apparently they don't understand rational arguments anymore. Or the shouts of thousands of australians unable to play the game they bought for weeks.

Good comic, I like the sentiment behind it.

But why does it say 2009 at the bottom?

Well, with this online DRM starting to appear on consoles, I wonder how long it will take until all of games have to suffer through this. Sure you may say that it was just a special case, and that it would never work if implemented at large, but thats what a lot of people said about all the PC DRM. And with consoles becoming more like PC's, with updates, different models, able to surf the web, watch movies, ect. I wouldn't be suprised if it happened soon.

Good comic Shamus.

Well Fable and Gears of War aren't exactly favorites by everyone.

contect?

Also, it says 2009 BECAUSE SHAMUS SHAMELESSLY REUSED AN OLD COMIC STRIP.
Down with the oppressor I say!

Whoops. Because the last Overlord comic I made was in 2009, and I copy pasted the text box.

And I've done this twice in a row now.

More like OverSIGHT.

Hohoho.

But yeah, keep up the good work!

That was great. Well done Shamus ... well done

Man, that last paragraph talking about Ubisoft leaving the PC scene alltogether since they distrust us made great impact on me.

I noticed they want us gone from that platform and prevent piracy, I value my Xbox Live too much to commit privacy. So long DRM stays clear from the consoles, I am good.

Damn it Shamus, now I have to do a "PC gaming, happily changing since 1985" picture D:

Granted, it wouldn't be very ironic seeing as how that statement is true...

Damn it! I'm confused!

I actually think Ubi should just stop messing around and abandon the PC if they hate and distrust the userbase this much. What's the point in going to all the trouble of porting a game if you don't actually want people to play it?

Amen.

I won't be surprised if this turns out to be their long-term goal in the end, that they're deliberately selfdestroying their PC business in the hopes that their stockholders/board of directors/whatever will force them out, so they won't have to admit to being the first major publisher to drop the PC.

I think that's actually their business model. If they can "prove" that PC ports "don't work" and "there's not enough money" to "make a decent PC version" then "it's only financially viable" to "abandon the PC" "for the time being".

Never let it be said that they just didn't like the PC. They have REASONS.

Very funny. I actually Lol'd. Loving your "Thing about stuff" "ads" btw, thanks for making those.

That is so totally evil...I think Ubisoft have Richard from LFG working for them! ;o

Oh that was fantastic, pretty much anything directed at Ubi is gold at the moment but what you did raised the bar.

best idea i can think of for them being this retarded is that they are really greedy fucks

Id respect them for just not releasing a PC version of the game if they assume even the paying customers are pirates. But to go thru all this hassle with this "Always On DRM" (Which sadly is growing to become the norm now) just so they can earn extra 15% of their overall sales is really just Greed. i cant explain it any other way.

That or they are trying really hard to kill PC gaming.

This is one of your best comics yet, I really do like oyur choice in using Overlord in this one. Works really well, laughed pretty hard, keep it up. :)

I too wish Ubisoft would just stop making PC games; I don't need to play every game. It's one less thing to be angry about. Every time I open up Steam and see a Ubisoft game in the topsellers' list I die a little. Then I'm relieved that most Ubisoft games disappear from that list fairly quick compared to most titles.

Every time claims that Ubisoft really wants out of the PC market, I point out that they bought out Nadeo, a stubbornly PC-only developer (the DS and Wii TrackManias were developed by Firebrand Games). Contridiction, much?

So both Activision and Ubisoft are being pillocks now, who's next?

Maybe their idea really is to make the PC version so unattractive with abominable DRM that people get the Xbox version instead, and so point to their poor PC sales and use that to get out of making PC games.

Upon further thought, I've decided that can't be true, they're just arseholes.

The thing is, sadly the titles of that picture are awsome games and all classics, but that is just a bit more then one good PC gaming series per year over the last 25 years :(. How many console series over the last 25 years could we name (including games that were first released on consoles or had far more success because of DRM or better controls on consoles, or because despite existing more PCs out there the average PC is worse then the average console)?! If less then 38 then yes PC gaming is not dying at all.

And I hope in 10 years we wont have that image with just titles like farmville, mafia wars, evony and what not.

I am a bit confused... Why quote me? I didn't actually talk about PC gaming, only joking about making a new versison of the "Happily dying" picture.

In that case, consider the quote dismissed, I apologise for that :). And in case somebody wants to change the picture hope he does not take my last line suggestion seriously.

That's how it's done, son.

haha loved it.

Yep you don't get much more evil then Ubisoft. ...except perhaps for Activision.

Dollars to donuts, the Overlord will be billed by Ubisoft for 'business consultation fees' after that phone-call.
