Im glad im not only one who found it tedious at times...some enemies just took too long to kill to be fun.

Still a good game though

My comment aren't directed at those who genuinly agree, but those who pretend to in a vain attempt to somehow appease Yahtzee. Specifically those who haven't given the game achance and merely assume that because Yahtzee says it's shite, that it must be so. These people fail to realise that Yahtzee is easily the biggest troll on the internets right now and should not be taken seriously.

Enjoy misinterpereting everyone elses comments.

It's not one of the worst games. Everyone needs to realise that Yahtzee is a critic. He only cares about the bad stuff, and exaggerates until he gets a good repetitive joke.

The game is great. He never mentioned that it's a challenging game on the Wii for once. He left out a load of stuff. To be fair there is quite a lot of gathering but the wifi quests with friends outweighs this if you need resources quick and you're stuck on single player. I love the way Yahtzee does these videos but you really need to play it before listening to him.

Scrumpmonkey:
Never quite got Monster Hunter. Treid it once. It was possibly one of the worst games i have ever played and i've played a LOT of bad games (i own shaq-fu for christs sake).

I guess the japanophile backlash will be fun to watch for this collosal grind ridden peice of shit. Perhaps that's worth MH existing in the first place. MH is like tentacle porn, makes no sense outside japan and i don't think i want it to.

@Roseveare: This quote just proved what you're talking about. Hi five.

There are good games coming out and already released and he's doing one of the most horrible games yet. C'mon Yahtzee, why review a game most of us don't give a shit 'bout? Tear something big and epic. You are always good with that one!

Ah, I get it now. A game that starts off kinda slow and requires actual skill to kill something and he dismisses it right from the start.

Maybe Yahtzee was one of the brainless fucktards I ended up coming across online.

I played the first Monster Hunter, and I liked it.
I'll probably like this one to.

But from my experience of the first one, the grind is fairly bad.
Mostly this is because the game isn't really all that good for playing offline.
It takes a very long time and a lot of luck to get any good loot.

However, if you play with your friends, or find a nice group to play with, you can get some nice loot very quickly, making the overall ride smoother.

Plus the game had quite a thrilling hunt with the big beasties.
I liked the fact I had to learn their behaviour patterns to successfully take them down.
But some monsters are virtually impossible to take on alone.
Its very different to most MMOs, and is certianly not to everyones tastes.

Congratulations, you just discovered who Yahtzee really is. Someone who hates the Wii tremendously. In all honesty, I wager his opinion is more valid than yours, the way he describes it is utter shit. I must read some reviews but from the concept and way of leveling and doing quest..Well, LOL. That's hardly interesting.

Isn't it sad how most of his fans are just like cattle?

That and the fact that they take him seriously as a game reviewer. Because of him people will now be calling this a bad game when it really isn't.

Yz has an abnormal alignment with me as far as gaming taste goes. At first this had no effect on my purchases. I just noticed what he says he liked I liked and what he said he did not I did not. Then he came up with a game I never heard of and said he liked it, and so I found it on steam and tried it out. That's how it starts, I find that most magazines and online review sites are too apologetic and would have be buying games I wouldn't like. I've bought games based on his reccomendations and it has always worked out well, and in the case of this one I will abstain from one because of his thoughts and feelings.

I kinda get the feeling most of the people who agree have, in fact, not played the game and indeed may not even have played a single monster hunter game at all and therefore don't actually know enough to actually have a valid opinion on the game.

Again, it comes down to my earlier post that points out Yahtzee hates most games, as a comedy critique he has to, or he wouldn't be very funny. Thus using most of his "critiques" to form any sort of opinion on a game is a fool's folly at best.

Yes, the game is grindy and expects you to gather a lot of stuff. However should you actually play farther than the 1 Star quests Yahtzee did you find that a lot of the things you need to kill tend to be giant monsters that can and do murder your face if you make a mistake or generally suck at noticing tells for attacks. Play online and get to Hunter Rank 31 plus and you start fighting monsters that think Nintendo Hard is a bitch difficulty for bitches.

But of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, just please look up all the facts before you do eh?

God, this makes me not want to buy the game more than his review. Everything you see as a plus I see as boring.

I haven't actually watched it yet because the current advertisement is a right ass. Surrounded half the damn screen telling me to click on the button so they can tell me how awesome their game is.

I.E, not just advertising pricks, but arrogant advertising pricks. Only the consumer is allowed to be a prick, so I'm waiting for a different ad to cycle in.

Maybe all you people hating on this game should have played all the other Monster Hunter games....or maybe having a strategy when fighting a huge fucking monster isn't your thing

Also I DO however agree with his last comment, it never should have been put on the Wii, it would have been so much better on the PS3

I'm am seething with rage at the various fanboys of the game complaining that "Now the everyone here at Escapist hates it..." and "He obviously didn't play mulitplayer..." or "he didn't play it long enough..." or whatever.

If you think that everyone at the Escapist is a mindless sheep bleating at Yahtzee's command, then why, exactly, do you post here? Do you like to hear yourself talk? (Yes, there are sheeple here, but they're everywhere. It's up to you to recognize them and filter out their nonsense.)

If you don't pay attention enough/seen enough ZP to have noticed that he has said that he absolutely does not review MP, shouldn't that be chalked up to your ignorance? Same goes for the bit about not playing it long enough. Jesus: he covered that like only 2 episodes ago.

I don't get why this happens every. single. fucking. ZP. Some poor schmuck who really likes the game being reviewed gets all butthurt because somebody said bad things about something he really likes, and suddenly it's as if the house of cards that comprises his entire belief system has been kicked over. Well, guess what? If you're that insecure about your opinions, that's a YOU problem, bub.

Seriously folks, anybody with half a brain realizes that Yahtzee couldn't possibly hate every single game he plays as much as he would like to portray that to be the case: if he did, why would he do it for a living??? Seriously, that would be like working as a crash-test dummy: I don't care how much the pay is, the multiple fractures and internal injuries make it not worth it!

No, what he does is satire and parody, not critique: it's obvious that he stopped looking for good things about games (except when using them to 'change pace' in the presentation) a long, long time ago.

Please, get a grip.

OK, it's too early to keep seething. I'm going to go get my coffee now.

Very satisfying to see the game receive a paddling by Yahtzee after relentlessly bothering me with its awful commercials in cinemas over the last two months. Also, nice to see that the Monster Hunter games have apparently stayed true to the gameplay I already hated in the first game... annoying as fuck, and beating the actual big monsters was near-impossible for layman players.

The design of the giant sea monster made me laugh heartily. ^^

The previews for the game made it sound like it was going to be highly immersive, but any chance of that being the case was ruined by it being on the Wii. It comes packaged with an alternative controller, it has its own separate online component to get around the Nintendo standard, and it tries to overcome the graphic limitations to the point that they misstep and break immersion in two with frequent loading screens.

The game is doing everything in its power to be an XBox 360 or PS3 game and failing miserably at it, which leaves me to wonder why the hell it's on the Wii in the first place. It leads me to conclude that some accountant made the claim that it would be more marketable that way, which is reasonable enough, but they could have made a better game had they worked with the system instead of trying to make it something it's not.

Considering buying a Wii for this very game. Good review, but isn't the multi player the best part of this Monster Hunter games?

t_rexaur:

It's an internet forum, you can't expect much.

I'm surprised people are still railing him for not talking about multiplayer components when he states over and over again how he largely avoids it. It's like people forget this is mostly satire performed for entertainment.

Surly he isnt that dead inside? Yes? No? No wait, its just poo

I'm glad Yahtzee is bashing the game instead of praising it because it just wouldn't be funny if he liked every game he played.

But why he didn't get past the first 2-3 hours of the game and actually get to the meat of it is beyond me. Yeah it sucks that the game looks like it's full of grinding and collection quests at first but it really isn't.

You can actually easily beat the first big monsters without armor and just the starter weapons 15 minutes after starting up the game by going online or rushing through the early quests, it's not even that hard since Great Jaggi's and Qurupeco's attacks are extremely easy to read and dodge, and they don't have a lot of HP either, it only takes ~5 minutes to kill great jaggi alone, and qurupeco takes 5-15 minutes to kill offline or online with a few friends.

There are plenty of things to complain about in this game, for example how being attacked 3-4 times by a monster will kill you, how it's hard to see how much damage you've done to a monster, how hard it is to dodge monsters attacks when you first fight them, how hard it is to actually get close enough to a monster and get some attacks off without getting hit yourself, and so on and so on, but those things only apply IF YOU GET PAST THE FIRST TWO HOURS OF THE GAME.

Yahtzee, I am disappointed in you.

When I played the demo on PSP, I couldn't help but think 'Well, what did this monster do to me?' It's doesn't even attack other monsters it's just there maxin' n' relaxin'.

It's probably the same feeling I would have if was forced to be on a Japanese whaling ship.

Honestly this game didn't actually "TRI" hard enough, it has to be one of the worst games I've played and wasn't even worth the $6 I spent renting it, the petrol money for the 7km drive to the video store or the effort I spent getting my Wii out from my cupboard, dusting it off and bothering to plug it in.

Sorry my opinion, oh and also such a huge open world and the "monsters" etc etc, wasted on the Wii's lack of hardware, considering how bad it plays with the Wii mote this game definitely should have been made for the 360 or PS3, decent graphics and loading might have taken it out of the bottom of the barrel... Maybe.

Can't wait for next week!

Gotta say I have not played much of this new monster hunter game, just a little bit of the begining, and I agree I takes way too long to do anything. I miss the good old days when the 1st quest in a Monster Humter game was "kill take thing", followed by make a knife out of it's teeth.

and on a related note why was this game ever caneled for the ps3 :(

I love the Monster Hunter games! You really need to put a lot of time into them before they get good though. Playing with friends is one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had.

Anyone else getting some dumb popup ad when they click to watch?

Hated every single damn moment of it, the atrocious controls, the horrific camera which is always in the worst possible position 100% of the time and, most importantly, the way your character spends about a millenia ramming his arms into the air going "YES I FUCKING HEALED! I TOOK A POTION" every time you use a healing item (which is all the time). My only remaining question is HOW CAN PEOPLE LIKE THIS?! As a cruel, sadistic joke I made my brother play it, who is about 13, and he couldn't even get past the first 'hunt' quest. Awesome when a game presents roadblocks after the first 20 minutes.

Aylaine:
Funny review as always. I liked the Dogbaby part. xD

Does the Wii really have a controller like that though? o.o

Yep. The Wii Classic Controller (as it's called) has been out for about as long as the Wii itself, and it's quite effective for Virtual Console games and others. I'm sure Aura has probably used one.

OT: Well, this was an entertaining show, to say the least. I actually like the grind like that, so I still have an interest in the game. I'll give it a rental still, but I'll keep your words in mind.

So true. Those mo-cap guys need to tone it down some. I get it, I drank a potion. I get it, I ate some meat. You want to know how I get, because I chose the option to drink the damn potion. I don't need the dude to exaggerate the motion.

Funny video as always. The bit with the dog-babies was disturbingly amusing.

But, this was not a "review". I can bet you that he played less than 4 hours of the game. This sort of thing where he judges a game just from the first 2-3 hours is just dumb. Okay, I understand that he might not like the MMORPG-style grind quests, but these are only the first few quests (probably 10 or so) of this game. There's at least 40 hours of gameplay left.

Honestly, I used to trust some of his reviews cause he brought up interesting points like "immersion" and "story and gameplay going hand-in-hand", most of which I could easily relate to. I still find these videos funny and entertaining, but nothing else.

I agree with the posing after potions thing, but the camera is 100% manual. If you're not seeing anything, it's because you're not very good with it.

I AM A SERIOUS REVIEWER

I MAKE MONEY OFF OF PLAYING A GAME FOR AN HOUR, THEN JUDGE THE ENTIRE GAME FROM THIS EXPERICENCE

I disagree with your opinion and dismiss all fans of this game as mindless cattle merely content with subpar gameplay mechanics and terrible controls.

Just kidding. I don't own a wii. You sound ridiculously smug and pompous though and that's a poor way to sell a game.

Being dissapointed that people don't form their own opinions on something is being smug? This is news to me.

Anyone can buy the game and form an opinion. The point is to save money by reading/watching reviews. If people have found yahtzee to be a reliable indicator of whether they will enjoy a game or not, that is their choice.

Dismissing people as cattle because of their choice of game critic is senseless and without any actual logical basis, since they themselves know best what kind of games they like, not you. If they decide that Yahtzee's reviews are accurate, so be it. This was most apparent in the FF13 review, where the issue of the first 20 hours of gameplay came up. To fans, it was no big deal. To others, it was unthinkable to suffer 20 hours just to get to the "real" game. This same issue applies to every game review, because reviewing is subjective. What may be inaccurate to you is in fact quite accurate to someone else.

If it so happens that Yahtzee's review contains blatant misinformation, the reasonable thing to do would be to post and correct those inaccuracies instead of the standard "LOL YAHTZEE SHEEPLE" and grinning wryly response.

I'm suprised every time Yahtzee reviews a wii game that isn't first party.
Also, does he really like or really hate KFC? It's been referenced many times by now.

t_rexaur:
No mention of the online and/or multiplayer aspect? Still good episode as always.

On a side note to people actually take what Yatzee says at face value? I mean you'd have to be pretty silly to do that since if you did every game apart from Adventure Island Dizzy would be shit and you'd never play anything, ever.

Nah you can tell when it's a negative review and when it's a positive negative review. The games which are actually good he'll squeeze in one sentence on long the lines of "but I have to admit it's completely addictive and fun to play " and then carries on with the negative review. Take Uncharted 2 as a good example of that.

Sigh...

What this guy said.

Wow I really didn't think he'd review THIS game. Seriously. I mean the game from a distance already kinda looked boring. I saw it on the gameinformer and it got a seven. I suppose this game would be more fun if you like killing monsters. And no real plot. And grinding. And reptiles.
