Game People Calling: He’s Fit for a Gamer

Game People Calling: He's Fit for a Gamer

Most fitness games are laughable, but we've found some light at the end of the tunnel for fitness gaming.

Keep moving to keep playing. A pause in your motion equals a pause in the game.

Heh, you know, that's actually pretty cool.

Yeah, I approve of this machine. Not some boring mini game thing (like some weird bike-thing a while ago which was supposed to be your controller for some shitty game) but something that can be integrated with the games you actually like and just combine ones favourite hobby with something more useful.

No, I do not think this is worth it.
It demands you to do three things at a once atleast.

I'll stick with my Wii Fit and my DS Fitness games.

I believe something very similar was on the Gadget Show, however it provided its own, simplistic, sports mini games. They criticized it because of the software that it came with but if you could put this into ANY gaming rig then, yeah, widest possible appeal :P

The DS has fitness games?

I'll just stick to press-ups methinks, need to work off these fps playing arms somehow.

I saw one called 'Stop Smoking with Alan Carr' once, if that counts.
I was horrified.

I do not see how i could row and play COD. I need my hands for that!

The Gamercize sounds like a great idea... but for a thousand bucks, I'll stick to my WiiFit and budget my gaming time.

Riiiiight. Call me loony-mcskanky-gypo. But i alwaysuse my erecise cycle while im on my ps3. I get in at least 3 hours cycling AND gaming in one sitting.

Wow, all this crap just because of the fat short-sighted greasy sweaty spotty stereotypical gamer.

Change gamer to North American and you got it.

And to answer the question we need both.

GOOD GOD THAT THING IS EXPENSIVE

its awesome sure, but no way in hell am i spending even 1/2 of the money to buy that.

i go to the gym 4-5 times a week and play sports anyways, no thanks i do not need this (at least for another 8-10 years)

I like the idea but...

For a start, it's way too expensive. 700 quid for that? Nice idea but no. I pay a fiver a month for my gym membership and I get access to a lot more machines. Plus, the machines in my gym have iPod plugs for music & movies, plus TV and radio. I wouldn't be able to concentrate on gaming AND cycling/rowing/whatever.

Maybe for someone with no local gym, that would be a good idea.

It sounds like a good idea in principle, but if you're paying $1000-ish, you might as well get a dedicated exercise bike or rowing machine, or even a treadmill (Though I think they're a little more expensive) and keep exercising as you play. Or watch a film/TV - it reduces the multitasking, whilst still taking your mind off of exercise. Iron Man + cross trainer = exercise based awesome! (from experience!)

Just like sprinting on a treadmill (or running on general) while listening to this song:

And most other uptempo Batman soundtrack songs. You're not running, you're dashing. Include a cape and you are the Dark Knight! So freakin' awesome.

According to the reviewer it doesn't take long to get used to that, though that of course could differ per person.

They can work, and, I am sure one day will work...but, at the mioment like most peripherials it is just a novelty, and has the novelty feel

How do you row and use a controller at the same time? I am extremely confused by this.

How does that work, exactly?
Wrist exercise?

...I want that. I don't know why, but I want it.

... Why do I get all the wrong mental images from that .. ?

Depends on game.
For example, "My Weight Loss Coach" tells you to go out on a walk with a stepcounter that you later insert into the DS for it to calculate and then either yell at you or give you compliments. Yeah they're kinda simple like that but what do you expect? It's a DS so it's all fine.

I saw one at gamestop that looked like a walking game that came with ankle weights or something.

While the idea that you have to keep pedaling to play the game is an interesting idea, for less money you could probably buy an exercise bike and just watch a movie while you exercise.

as am I, unless you can integrate your controller into the handles that you row with? although that would be incredible awkward to use.

Yep, dashing is always cooler than running. Always. (Note to self: Get hold of Dark Knight soundtrack, change morning "run" to morning "dash". Or possibly morning "brood in impressive location")

Well, considering that it's a fact that nobody can multitask (not even women), so doing 2 things at once will reduce individual performance, I'm not sure how much appeal this thing's gonna have.

surely any good game will do a better job than that? Any good game keeps both hands and your mind active, therefore unable to light cigarettes, never mind smoke them. If you're struggling, put the pokey stick thing in your mouth as a placebo. (what are those things called, the name escapes me!)

Carts like Alan Carr and the recipe things are just books put on plastic and then quadrupled in price, and then useless unless you have battery power, I mean, who wouldn't buy a book instead of a cartridge?

I have to say it sounds like a great idea, adding fitness to games you actually want to play, however I sense it'll eventually just get disconnected and end up under the bed with the rowing machine, ankle weights and all the other fitness equipment bought when you were feeling guilty for eating a whole large pizza and a tub of ice cream on your own then foolishly turned on the shopping channel.

do not understand . . .

any game that requires ANY degree of finesse/precise control goes spastic once you start bloody ROWING

English Comedian, actually pretty funny, the type that makes fun of himself mostly, i.e. his sexuality, looks and voice.

Here's a link to part of one of his stand-ups, not exactly a voice you'd want to tell you to stop smoking though.

I find this digusting. Go the fuck outside and exercise, perhaps the gym, and then play games while your muscles recover and you don't want to move.

Holy shit, it's not that difficult.

Fat lazy pieces...

Maybe I'm just being a purist, but I agree with this. Going to a gym or even just cutting out sodas and taking time to run around your block is not that hard. You'll look good, have more energy... plus, there's the laaaaadies. We need to do ourselves a favor and remember that gaming is a pastime, not a whole life. Unless of course you work in the video game industry. But I think even those guys and gals take time to go to the gym. And have families. So yeah, no excuses.

Well, I really try to avoid multi-tasking when possible, as it has an adverse affect on short-term memory, and mine is not that great. I weight lift when I am taking classes, and right now I play a lot of DDR Max on Heavy, and I ref soccer (money, fun and exercise = win). I also cycle around town, so I would say I am getting a good amount of excersise.

This device is interesting, but I would probably not use it myself.

Amen to that . Nobody said the truth would be easy to take, so get some real excercise for fuck's sake!
These games make me sick.

Personal Trainer Walking - it comes with a couple of pedometers.
