This is an outstanding article. I'll be bookmarking this and sending it to a bunch of people, even ones who don't play videogames, because they will understand this. Thanks!

The US getting into Football in a big way will spell doom for the rest of us, with the money and population you have a World Cup wouldn't be far off. Do the rest of us a favour and stick to handegg ;)

Cheers for that...much appreciated!

Fantastic article, with a lot of interesting points.
Great read!

Meh. Money and population aren't everything. Many of the countries doing well in the World Cup are neither the richest nor the biggest countries playing. You don't see China dominating the football game after all, even though they've got a huge population to draw from and football is the best funded sport ever in China. It's much more important to have a culture that fully embraces football, drawing in children at a very young age, keeping them interested, and thus pick out the real talent as early as possible. Pretty much all of the really good football nations have kids playing football on the street/local fields at every opportunity. It's not a sport you can start playing at age 16 and expect to become a world-class athlete, no matter how well you're trained.

If America really develops such a 'football culture', then it's very possible that young American talent starts to emerge more strongly, but it'll take a good amount of time and even then there's no guarantee.

On topic: I'm not American, but I found the article pretty interesting. I've never really though about sports that way, but I suppose it makes a lot of sense.

Ha! I was just talking the other day about how American football is to other sports what turn-based RPGs are to action games. I've never understood what people find exciting about it. Its biggest fans are exactly the kind of people I would expect to find it boring.
