Stolen Pixels #209: Please Let Me Arrest You

So True, so funny. Nice One.

Spoiler: CHRIS IS ACTUALLY THE ZOMBIE

HAAAAAAAAAA, Exactly!!!

Yeah Chris is unbeleivebly bad at killing major villans until they`ve fully powered up the one that really sticks in my my mind is the cutscene from the same game where Wesker throws his glasses at Chris and

what a tool that man is

Haha made me laugh out loud, I noticed this happening too, best quote "I just had an extreme makeover." (said in a boston accent)

to quote Tuco:
"if your gonna shoot just shoot don't talk first"

It is truly terrible that the genre savvy nature of some current villains runs in the face of classic heroes like Chris. Ah well, more fodder for comedy, innit Shamus?

AmrasCalmacil:
You can't shoot a woman in a dress like that!

It's probably designer.

This is why Resident Evil should take a leaf out of Sin City's book.

"Damn fine coat you got there..."

oh chris you you over muscled idiot! i liked the "tell us your evil plans"....."No i don't want to!" made me lol

I had the exact same experience as Shamus. Why does Chris love failure so much? I don't know how Wesker ended up having his plans foiled when the military sent like five people after him, the vast majority of whom were extremely incompetent.

The most blatant was when that one guy on the boat takes something like a minute to inject himself and mutate into a giant sea monster that's way harder to kill than his human form would have been.

He doesn't even shoot his decaying corpse-thing when he's dying. He goes to pull the trigger after they finish getting all the information and then Sheva stops him!

God the AI in that game is useless :/

At least Leon S. "Meester Scott Kennedy" Kennedy had the excuse of being choked or knocked on his ass most of the time this sort of thing happened in 4.

I actually got thrown out of a tabletop campaign because of my loathing for this narrative nonsense. The GM had us enter a room with the Big Bad and started taunting us with his plans for World Domination. Before he could get a syllable out:

Me: I shoot him in the face.

GM: Huh?

Me: I shoot him in the face.

GM: But he hasn't stopped talking yet.

Me: Don't care. I shoot him. Full auto.

GM: * looks at notes, fumbles his dice nervously * But . . . you can't!

Me: Why not?! He's blabbing there like an idiot. I have the drop on him.

GM: * stunned silence *

I thought he was going to start crying XD

Ok. I lol'ed. Seiously, why not just shoot the damn guy? Nothing's holding you back.

This was also parodied in the first Gamer's movie.

Actually, in that very cutscene, Chris and Sheva do shoot at Excella when she tries to run and the woman ends up dropping a plot important syringe from her suitcase when she was getting shot at.

Doesn't actually matter though, b/c you could have emptied clips into Liquid and it still wouldn't kill him.

It's true, no character in Metal Gear Solid can die unless there's a sad violin theme playing in the background.

Well, I was more talking about how Liquid is an [nigh] invincible badass, but I guess you could go the humor route as well.

Badass? He's like the most Anakin Skywalker character in the whole Metal Gear series (and it has lot).

"I hate you! I should be the chosen one! But they gave me the recessive genes! (facepalm) Now I'll kill you to death!!! Then I'll be the best!"

You're focusing on the wrong part. The fact that he can pilot a helicopter in adverse conditions, and keep it flying while it's being bombarded with missiles, then pilot a giant robot, survive missile impacts on the cockpit, get knocked off said robot's head into a sea of flames only to get back up and drive a jeep with control and precision, only faltering when being hit with a mounted machine gun, then surviving the crash of said jeep, to get back up once again. And in the end, he dies, but none of your direct attempts to kill him had anything to do with that.

As for his unfortunate misunderstanding of genetics, that's not really his fault, he's intellectually and emotionally stunted as the result of his environment being controlled by...well, okay, I'm not sure about who, I haven't beaten all the games yet.

Honestly I think this issue is that while fairly intelligent people play them, game makers are so afraid to loose a potential player they make sure the game plot can be understood by even the least intelligent person who has ever picked up a controller.

So clues that are meant to hint at what is going on are fairly blatant to anyone who has a basic grasp of narrative. And by the time your "friend" betrays you about 60% of the players knew he as the bad guy several plot points before and annoyed by the fact that you weren't aloud to shoot him hours ago.

The scary part is that 40% of the players were actually surprised and found the plot twist gripping.

------
Second thought here. There is also a problem that in books and movies it is perfectly fine if the audience Knows the bad guy is in the next room but the main character doesn't. This can add to the tension and make people more interested. This doesn't work in games, because the audience is also the protagonist and so if they have knowledge that the plot says the protagonist shouldn't all you do is frustrate them by stopping them from acting on what they know.
