Shamus Plays: Champions Online, Part 1

Star on Chest just hates it when cities don't have proper alien invasion plans.

Weird question, Shamus, why drag this one back up and run it again? Or were there differences that my own memory lapse missed?

Wow, this brings back memories!
I read this on TwentySided when it was linked to in the first Part of Lulzy's adventures...

Re-runs? Boo! Hiss!

To be honest your wife had a right to be concerned if you had spent a large proportion of your day staring at an idealised male characture.

Is there ever going to be another new lets play series? Becuase i don't think your concience can take that kind of rise in the scuicide rate if there isn't.

Plus i may be forced to kill this adorable kitten

A new series or the kitten get it!

I can understand this. I don't know how much overlap there is between TwentySided and Escapist, but I bet it's mostly one-way (i.e. lots of TwentySided fans have come to the Escapist because Shamus is now here, but very few have gone the other way - no offense Shamus). Therefore, there's quite a high chance that this series, which does have its comedic value, has not been seen before by most of the population of the Escapist...

Those who have seen it, well, just read or don't read it. Maybe you've forgotten most of it by now? Either way, it's nice to see the original Let's Play series airing here, and it's easy work for Shamus, so he gets a bit of a rest. We all win, right?

I go for a quick run-through of the character building options and am able to craft my avatar in just under a fortnight, which is a new record for me.

Ah, the happy weeks I'd spend just trying to get the costume right.

Craptacular game, where every character does every single one of the same boring, reptitive quests, because there is no other way to level besides quest grinding. Ever power framework is structured the same, just with slightly different animations, there is no in-game help from the GM's, they just occasionally hand out freebies, and there is absolutely no immersion. The best part of City of Heroes was it was the only MMO thatw as not gear dependent, and this game kills that by the time you are level 10. If you are not well equipped, you are gimped.

Just wondering, but when people cry for help, does Star on Chest's super-agent swoop down and start asking if they have the appearance fee on them?

I finally managed to play this game yesterday for about two hours. But after getting back from a lunch break, I couldn't get on, again. It would just freeze up on me during the loading screen.

I actually did read this when I was checking out 20 sided one morning and got way too addicting. Weird coincidence, but I was actually thinking of checking Champions Online out. Any one here play and have some thoughts?

Haha, I remember reading this. As one of the 6 or so people who don't care if its a re-run, I look forward to more.

Also, ENTIRE OTHER TEAM IS BABIES!

Hmm...Well, I'll read it twice!

Is Star on Chest even built to take gunshots to the face?

Can't stop smiling when I read this. "If not, grab a brick." I'm going to try and quote that more often.

Looking forward to seeing more of this. Champions was pretty fun for the first month I played it, until I ran into the walls of "out of content" and "leveling up takes forever" around level 33. They made a nice corner of "I don't feel like paying for this anymore." And I think I'll drop this wall analogy because I'm bad at it.

I've seen more adorable kittens. That one is a 5/10 at best.

Have you seen that chin? It could repel a nuclear blast.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but... I've read this already on your other blog! I hope you are using this time to find another MMO to play... like WOW or something.

Well I'm in the "visit twentysided a lot less than I really should" demographic, so this is new to me, and very welcome. Extremely funny, and I look equally forward to a more up-to-date Let's Play series. :)

I never read the LOTRO one, because I started paying attention to the articles on the Escapist when it was about halfway over. I've never read this, either. So thanks very much for the read. You're a very funny man!

It's a very common police tactic to shoot the guy who's going to save your bacon in the face. I believe it was first created in the Marvel Universe by a cop who was bored of merely giving superheroes flak for the speed at which they were stopping criminals.

I look forward to super-shenanigans!

I happen to be in the, um, "never visited twentysided or played D&D ever" demographic, so this is brand new and highly entertaining. Yay Shamus!

Well, some people did miss it when it was originally ongoing (myself included).
So, hell, I'm really content.

Heh, this brings back memories of that horrific starting area. I really hope you give that annoying Ironclad mission the treatment it deserves.

I enjoyed this, though; by the time I discovered Lulzy, you were already 20 in and I didn't feel like catching all the way up. It's nice to be able to follow a new segment from the beginning.

I've visited twentysided before and read this one quite a bit, but not all of it. I'm happy with what I'm getting.

But it would be cool if you did a Dungeons&Dragons Online one, just like the Adventures of Lulzy. It would be interesting to read that one. I remember all of the F2P quests until level 13 pretty darn well, at least i think so. It would be cool to see all the quests from another perspective.
But this is entertaining, too.

Unlike some, I am hooked on this part already. Keep them going Shamus, you good-for-nothing loser--I mean dork!

I enjoyed playing champions, it was fun and interesting to me.

For a limited time only, we have all the old LotRO articles up for reading!

Also, Star on Chest is great even without heroin!

If you watch any TV at all, you'd be well served by using that time instead to catch up on Lulzy.

I actually really enjoy champions, bought it Day 1 and currently have my subscription up and running. It's still really flawed, but the combat is so much fun.

His latest blog entry actually talks about his decision to do this.

I am a little disappointed, personally, but escapist has a huge audience that hasn't ever visited his main site, so it seems like a safe move.

I tried Champions Online out a while ago - it was only $10, so combined with the free month it was a pretty great deal. Too bad the game itself wasn't that great - it only held my interest long enough to play for one session of about 3 hrs. But now, I can vicariously experience the rest of the game, in a way that's probably more entertaining than actually playing! Thanks, Shamus!

Pugiron:

I have to disagree, your powers determined a LOT more than your equipped items in this. A character with a particularly nasty set of powers and nothing equipped is a lot more effective than a character with poorly chosen powers and great equipment. Granted having the gear is a nice boost, I didn't notice much improvement in that regard until around 30-ish when I could wear some really nice stuff.

Somehow I get the feeling Star on Chest is making his Escapist debut despite having been available on Twenty-Sided for some time due to the Star Wars MMO (I forgot the name since, well, I don't care much about it) not being released yet. I'd bet that's next on the Plays list.

It was better in the original vernacular. ;)

This was an awesome LP so I'm willing to let it slide.

Aw man. I was hoping for something new, but at least people will be able to see this, as they should; it's fucking awesome.

I did read this before, but I enjoyed it enough to read it again. Maybe we could look at this one like a "Director's Cut" or "Special Edition" wherein Star on Chest shoots first. Though I suspect he always shoots first.

And for what it's worth I really liked Champions. Id probably give it another run, try the new content they're adding, if it weren't for FFXIV coming soon (and my limited income). Woo.

Brilliantly written, loved it Shamus, especially since I haven't already read it.
