The Chronicles of Cataclysm: The Curse of the Worgen

Hope you got your things together; hope you are quite prepared to die.

You will not tempt me, Satan! Every day I have to rock back and forth in the corner chanting to myself, "WoW sucks, it really REALLY sucks, I will not re-activate my subscription," just to stay sane.

But I guess 16 hours of Starcraft 2 each day isn't really healthy, either. XD

Haha, this is me, too. Every time I read one of these articles, I force myself to say:

"Boooooooooooring!"

out loud. It's just barely keeping me determined to stay away. Just.

You know there's really no harm in enjoying WOW, right? :)

I've gotta say, if I'd quit, I'd probably get a time card just to see what they'd done, then decide if I wanted to pay up for the expansion to see the new race's areas.

I think it is a mistake to make an alone written article about the worgan starting zone. It would be much better to actually make a commented video like this guy did.

You can't describe the greatness of Blizzard's work through words.

Worgens look nice.I actually dreamed of playing as a worgen when I first discovered them in the dark forest area.

After watching the video I don't want to play as an ape with huge hands. The animations suck for Worgen.I hope WoW dies in less than 3 years so they release a new game.

They seem to be doing a fair buit to try and have more people join into the fun. Ill admit, it looks fun, but still...its art style bugs me so much

Yay more WoW goodness. Cant wait for Cataclysm.

As a veteran player, there is no atmosphere to be found in the worgen starting area.

Maybe it's something only newcomers can experience, but if you understand the formulas and mechanics behind wow, it's just impossible to get scared. You just know there will be no challenge to be found here, you can't make a difference in the outcome no matter how good you are.
That's just forgetting the part about your fellow players, how can you feel suspense, if bob right there is bunnyhopping though the landscape?

Some events are even ruined completely by randoms. I remember one quest quite well, the last part of the worgen attacks, some mobs have to come in to the cathedral to spawn your questmobs. which is impossible because 25 randoms keep killing them before they can come in, wondering why their quest doesn't update.

In direct comparison, the goblin starting area, with all it's jokes and sillyness fits way more into the mood of wow, altough that depends a bit on wether you like steampunk or not.

WoW shall not take me!!
TOR might, but never WoW!

EDIT: although i do suppose that cataclysm might entice me a little for a 10 day trial.

I don't play WoW, but I had to comment on this article because the blurb in the OP is a line from "Bad Moon Rising" by Creedance Clearwater Revival, one of my top 5 favorite bands.

Wait...Back up a sec...Worgens are werewolves, right? What kind of werewolves are we talking about?

I felt like that review/sneak preview was basically phoned in, it really paled to the goblin sneak peak in my opinion.

Macgyvercas:

Wait...Back up a sec...Worgens are werewolves, right? What kind of werewolves are we talking about?

Humanoid wolves. How they act depends on the area. Gilneans and those up in Grizzly Hills can change at will, those in pyrewood village change at night, and most are wolf form the whole time, or are just born as Worgen.

Also, they don't sparkle.

Hmm... so the Goblin starting area is better than the Worgen area.

Makes sense, the Horde is so much better than Alliance anyways...

Sounds to me like the same old boring Blizzard.
No suprises and a B-type story that could had been written by me at the age of 12.

For what it's worth, the Worgen bite happens in the basement where you find the guy hunched over and he throws you away; by the time you reach the cathedral, the bite is infected.

Anyway, I loved the Worgen starting area. But, I still feel that Worgens and Goblins are two of the least exciting races Blizzard could've added.

The worst part of Cataclysm so far, to me, is that very little seems to have changed in other starting areas, like Elwynn Forest.

Catalyst6:

...due to the Horde being Blizzards favourites! But thats another debate...

In any case, still rolling Worgen; not out of preference, but because all my stuff is on the Alliance. And I am far to lazy to farm dailies to build my money up.

Steve Butts:

Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Haven't heard a CCR reference in quite awhile. Kudos.

Anyway, looks enjoyable. I play Horde, so I won't be seein' much Worgen, though.

Jake Martinez:

Ouch. To be fair, the Worgen starting area just isn't as cool. The deck was stacked against me.

At this point, things get kind of fuzzy. We must have won the fight because I'm still alive. But something must have gone wrong, because I'm locked in the stocks.

After you turn in the quest to kill 8 or 10 of w/e the attacking Worgen are called the NPC yells "THIS IS WHERE WE PLAY A VIDEO OF YOU TURNING INTO A WORGEN AND FAST FORWARD TO THE PRESENT". Needless to say the Worgen starting area is still incomplete, don't even get me started on disconnecting every time I tried to save a drowning victim for another quest once the sundering happens.

Blah, I can think of more interesting races to play. Seriously? goblins and worgen? why not demons, bound to the horde by the warchiefs warlocks? or elemental people or even SOMETHING NEW?
Blizzard is reeeally marking time now.

Those mounted quests sound quite interesting. I may have to try playing Alliance during this expansion as well.

Actually, I really want to see how the Worgen end up in the Alliance. Not to mention, the Forsaken just make great villains. Cunning, ruthless, and just a tad insane.

Both areas sound somewhat interesting in their own ways - the goblins more than the worgen mainly because they get more toys and generally have more fun from the sound of things whereas the Gilneas area's attempting to be all serious and moody (never WoW's strong point) - but it doesn't tempt me to return.

Why not?

Because these are just starting areas. The rest of the game would be unchanged. Oh, yes, geographically it will be altered to a considerable degree, using flying mounts everywhere will be extremely convenient and the quest chains will doubtless be altered to suit the new landscape, but as Moriarty pointed out above, the mechanics all sound the same. Beyond the new races' start points it will all blend together into the same grind regardless of race/class and before long it feels like nothing's changed at all, I'm certain of it.

Hell, once you hit 58 and go to Outland nothing will be changed at all. There's no cataclysm out there, right? And did the disaster reach as far as Northrend or is that content to 70 (and beyond, really - I hit 70 long before I finished Icecrown's quests and I hadn't even started on the mountain area east of it yet, that's another two levels easy I'd bet if you kept at it there) all untouched as well?

Nah. I can see why some folks are interested enough in the new material to resubscribe to try it out, but I'd bet for most of those it will only last a few months, if that. People new to the game will likely find a lot to keep them interested, but for those who left because the game just started feeling stale...I don't see anything in the expansion details to change that yet.

Don't sweat it, Steve. A visual aid might've conveyed some of the details better than a simple write-up, but it doesn't sound like you left anything important out. I can't imagine a video would have "saved" the review from making the area sound more familiar than the goblins' explosive craziness did. Can't help the way it's made.

Sad that Worgen are going to be misconstrued as furries...

....... Holy shit, I'm actually interested in WOW now.

Must..... Wait...... For..... The Old Republic.....

Now... THAT's finally gotten me a little excited for Cataclysm. Good review.

Who knows, maybe I'll finally be running Alliance this time.

I am still on the wall about this. I think WOW is more fun to read about other people's experiences than it is to do it by myself (it is like the game without the grinding)

Ekonk:
Fucking World of Warcraft. I honestly don't understand what people see in it.

Well, as the old saying goes, "More for me!"

Except that doesn't really work in this situation, since it's a massively multiplayer online game and one more person playing wouldn't hinder my playing in the least...

Well, I find it fun, as to millions of others. Perhaps we just have different tastes?

You mean like they are already doing regardless of it's success or failures.

It's almost like having billions of dollars allows you to hire more people and have them work independently on other projects without fear of failure because your main staple makes you more money than Chinese loans.

If you don't include Raiding I have to say that I don't recall any point between level 1 and level 80 where I said "Aw crap grinding :/". Whenever people mention it I want to post that meme "your doing it wrong", but then I remember that that'll just spread those things and I stop myself.

Yup. At this rate they've only got another good 10-15 years ahead of them. It was good while it lasted.

I suppose so. I find the lore tacky, the graphics severely aged. I'm waiting for Guild Wars 2. But each to his own, eh?

Hmm... does not seem so exciting to me. :/

Good review, though I thought it could have used a summary of your thoughts at the end.

And I really feel rather juvenile when I say I am excited for Cataclysm for A) How Gilneas is portrayed. The Nation has always fascinated me, and B) I love England...*slams head against wall*

Because the Horde isn't evil?

Oh, wait. Fucking Garrosh.
