Escape to the Movies: Salt

Well, Angelina was definetly a good choice to fallback.

I do want to see this film...as, it does seem pretty intelligent

z3rostr1fe:
I dunno, but Russians definitely has the best English accent for a Villain. Sad... But I would really like to learn that accent!

The "Russia as villain" thing was also pointed out by Yahtzee in the Singularity review, so I don't know what's with them placing Russians as villains these days.

I've said this elsewhere, but I think there are lots of reasons why Russians are still portrayed as villains. The obvious is that America has been itching for that blood match with the Soviets that we never got (the Georgia-Russia conflict in South Ossettia back in '08? That was a proxy war between the U.S. and Russia, as Georgia's government and military is propped up by the American government.). There's also the fact that Russia still has some 'issues' internally, be it the political machinations of the Kremlin (suppressing free speech and political freedom, amongst other things) or the fact that so many ex-KGB members have started working in organized crime.

I don't think I've even scratched the surface of all the ways the "Russia as villains" theme is still plausible and relevant, though I agree it's really getting overdone, especially since virtually none of the movies that work with it really bother to do anything with the idea other than go "Russians Bad!" (I'm looking at you, Iron Man 2...).

As for Salt...I think I'll pass, not a fan of Jolie.

Meh. Doesn't sound bad, but doesn't sound interesting enough for me.

Also, Angelina Jolie is ridiculously overrated, as far as looks go.

...

Am I the only one who doesn't find Angelina Jolie hot?

I mean, I love her work when she's cast right, but she's... skeletal... and it creeps me out... I don't see the appeal of her as "the" hot chick.

EDIT: Huh, well played person right above me, well played indeed.

Mezmer:
I'm totally disinterested in this movie. It's been hyped for like a year, and still looks really "Meh"

KingPiccolOwned:
I don't think Angelina Jolee (or however that's spelled) is in any way attractive... I'm serious, I don't think she's hot.

This. Her lips creep me out.

This, and also because (In recent days) she looks very disheveled.

Back like, 5 or so years ago, HELLS TO THE YEAH! But right now, nope.

bob is wrong!
the cold war hes been over for more then 2 decades :p

Actually if anyone looked at the papers recently there was some stuff aboot America nabbing some Russian spies. They couldn't have known this during production, but there is still some modernness to it.
Also...

Consistency man!

First you target Megan Fox for being an untalented plasticish looking sex symbol (I agree, but that's not the point here) and yet you do a complete 180 on your stance for that sort of thing with Angelina Jolie? Maybe it's just because she's your generations U.P.L.S.S., but all I'm asking for is that you try to be a little consistent.

It's actually very surprising how many people don't find Angelina Jolie attractive. To each his own, I guess, but I find her hotter than a thousand suns: it probably has a lot to do with the fact that she can pull off both tawdry and refined, is obviously very intelligent, and has just a whiff of that "batshit-fucking-LOCO" about her, with the tatts and the whole 'wearing a vial of her (former) husband's blood' thing. It also doesn't hurt that, unlike every other starlet out there, she's actually 35 years old and has had kids, and still looks great, so she's probably going to remain beautiful for a long time.

Whoops! Sorry about that: Got a little off track there.

I actually wanted to see this more because Wimmer wrote it, and both Equilibrium and his redo of the Thomas Crown Affair were good enough for me to be interested in his work. Ultra Violet? Not so much, but then again, that was an adaptation. Law Abiding Citizen was also good, up until the ludicrous ending.

Needless to say, I planned on seeing this anyway, but it's nice to know that Bob liked it: I feel more comfortable that I'm not wasting my money that way.

looks good, i'll gove it a try.
PS. you're roght, why is Russia always the bad guy? some of my best friends are Russiann (or was it Ukrainian or Latvian...) and their not spys tring to cause world war three...I mean at least i don't think so...

Emphasis added: whether or not you think Jolie can act, people who professionally judge that sort of thing think she can-- she did win an Oscar after all.

I think Bob has been relatively consistent: Johannson: hot and can act. Bob likes. Jolie: Hot and can act. Bob likes. Fox: Hot but is more wooden than a ventriloquist's dummy: Bob dislikes.

Interesting.... I thought this movie wouldve been a flop. Might just reconsider...

I keep thinking that mad smiley is like someone's mouth being shut by a sipper...

hahahahah!! almost 2 decades??? read your history, bob.. or was this made in 2008?

Is there really any reason for half the people commenting to just say
"I don't even think Jolie is hot so I won't see it"
Because it's really starting to get repetitive and annoying.

bahahaha, even today and at her age, Jolie still gets to us...

oh and...

Blue-State:
A spy movie where you can actually see the fight scenes? BRILLIANT!

To the Kremlin: We'll stop making hot spy movies about Russia when Russia stops making hot spies.
image

haha yeahhh I was gonna mention just that xD
it's recent news!!

keitarobg:
"MILF of the Universe" <- This is comedy gold, people!!

that's gonna stick in my head whenever I see Angelina Jolie from now on haha

I'm probably not going to see this movie anyway, just seems to be another generic spy/conspiracy movie to me, though I could be wrong. Also, am I the only one who finds Angelina Jolie marginally unattractive because of those damn lips?

I'm actually surprised MovieBob hasn't reviewed The Sorceror's(sp?) Apprentice yet. You think with Nicholas Cage being in it and all that...

I am in absolute and in total agreement with this ninja.
P.S.
Do not Google image search sexy Russian Spy with the filters off.

First time poster, long time viewer, blah blah blah I enjoy the show.

So, from what I gather from this is that it's your standard action flick that's fairly forgettable and neither particularly good nor bad? I guess that if Bob's correct and it doesn't ridiculously over-sexualise Jolie and treats her as a normal person then it gains credit for not falling into the trap that seems to have doomed most other female driven action films.

Of course, We're still waiting on the A-Team over here in England so I'll probably see that if I get the urge to see that sort of film.

Oh and if everybody is throwing out their 2 pence on the matter, I'd say that Jolie is attractive but doesn't stand out too far above the norm for Hollywood actresses. To me, Scarlett Johansson is undoubtedly 'the' hot chick but there are probably many who would disagree.

That's what they want you to think. Plus look at all the journalist murdered there last year and all the stuff the FSB (formerly KGB) are doing now.

Ugh. When are we going to get over Angeline Jolie? Honestly, the fact that you daunted on her for a good 30seconds to a whole minute was just...grating on my ears. Review the movie please, and stop fantasizing about some woman who isn't even that hot. It wasn't funny, and it was just kind of creepy.

lacktheknack:

Woodsey:
...

I thought this film came out like a year ago?

No... maybe it was announced a year ago? I've never heard of it...

I think I'm getting it mixed up with another one of her films.

Yea, enough with the Russian bad guys. Let's use the North Koreans. I'd say they're more of an enemy of the US than Russia is at the moment.

Angelina Jolie? Hot? That woman is a fucking anorexic.

And the film was only so-so. You'd do just as well if you rewatched the Bourne Identity.

Consistency over only three actresses? ONLY? That's not consistency.

wait wait wait... you think megan fox is the ugliest thing to hollywood since larry flint and you think that angelina (Let remember tomb raider) jolie (btw that is the french word for pretty). is hot/beuatiful/sexy? how does that work? there both that stereotypical big star uninteresting hot that you called meagan fox for in jennifer's body. i'm not gonna lie i'd sleep with either given the chance but niether strike me as the holy crap that is a fine peice of ass.

also brad pitt, jennifer aniston, too many babies, tomb raider 2.

I saw the premiere in Albany at the Palace Theater last night, and I have to say that this movie is kinda...meh. It's really predictable, and yes there were a few "twists" but they really didn't help make the plot anymore coherent. Angelina plays like a robot, and the audience never really receives a chance to become emotionally connected. Bottom line: It's a generic action flick that's fun to see with your friends once, then forget about for the rest of your life.
(Nice review though MovieBob, you hit the key points, and kinda even made me like the film a bit more)

Ughh, I hate Kurt Wimmer's movies, Equilibrium in particular, and I cant stand Jolie. Guess this movies not for me. Oh well, still enjoyed your review.

*Spoilers*: Technically, the movie does start off with her as a hostage in North Korea, so it's a start lol

So it is pretty much over all good. I don't get the feeling that it is a life changer like Inception or some great disaster that will make people rip their hair out like say... The Last Airbender. Just a good all around movie that you can recommend if you want something to kill time and to watch the woman that made every other woman "interested" shoot things.

I think his reasoning behind that is that Megan Fox he finds her, "is just hot in the same way a quater pounder is tasty, you know in the most blandess way." (Quoted pretty much from his review of Transformers) She is kind of hot, but not the best around. Angelina is the best around in his eyes.

Maybe the issue with Russia still being the bad guy (y'know besides the semi-topical discovery of real spies running around) Is that fact they are still the best enemy the US has for this stuff.

Part of that reason has got to be the fact we never actually went to war against them. Since there was no direct conflict to focus on, all our fear of enemy doings could be channeled towards intrigue.

Meh, I might see this. Really not to interested, though Jolie is always a nice bonus.
