Duke Nukem Forever Pages PREV 1 2 3 4 5 6 NEXT
As long as it makes me feel like i did in my youth... like starcraft 2 its taken a decade or more but the sheer fact that the game was made and released seemed to be enough, whether you liked the game mechanics or not...
As I've said elsewhere I'm not entirely sure that Duke Nukem Forever is a game that we really even want anymore. Go find a picture of Mr. Nukem somewhere. He's covered in pouches, he's got a constant scowl on his face and his only personality trait is a bad attitude. This is a character who would fit right at home on the cover of any given issue of an Image comic book from the 90's. So why are we expected to praise this game like it's the second coming of Christ? I'd like to think that this game will fail miserably because nobody really wants to shell out their hard earned cash for this kind of bullshit anymore, but given the fact that The Expendables has raked in $188,000,000+ I suppose I shouldn't be too optimistic.
What are you saying? | |
Exactly. I don't care if the game doesn't live up to the wait as long as it's fun, that I can carry more than 2 weapons, that it lacks a cover system and that it has no regenerating health. Bring on the medkits which are fun to collect.
The Wolfenstein vid was awesome. At least some people loved it. Well at least one...
I liked Wolfenstein, I just didn't vote.
I'm gonna throw in a sincere thank you here for calling it 'Where's Wally' instead of 'Where's Waldo'.
Great article and probably the closest game writer today to the classic English EMAP magazine writers from the 80s/90s and about as mean as "Mean Yob" (aka Julian Rignall), I can't believe it used to take six months to get a letter published in a magazine (was sent out by boat.)
Duke Nukem may not be the best FPS of all time, but he's the game Gotham deserves... not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him... because he can take it... because he's not a hero... he's a silent guardian, a watchful protector... the most sexist pig this side of the Clinton administration. Goal.
I'm glad Yahtzee feels that we need stupid over the top shooters again, as I feel this same way and this is the sole argument that has kept my interest in Duke Nukem Forever alive. The game just needs to be good enough to remind us all what video games are supposed to be about. Fun.
A lot of the gearbox guys started working at 3D Realms and a lot of the 3D realms guys have been taken in by Gearbox. But I think it will be good to get back to the shotguy in a pigmans face action.
i don't expect this game to be the end all shooter game, but i do expect it to be a lot of fun
Yahtzee asked "Just please, please, let me feel the wind on my face, rather than the side of a wall. Or tits. Tits on my face would be good too." Perhaps this has been said before, but it bears repeating: If The Duke is involved, it's a fairly safe bet that tits will be as well.
Don take it too over the top Yahtzee , you didn't follow the duke's past year , there is a lot of misinformation going around Gearbox has ben contacted by 3DREALMS to help financially, legaly with 2K/t2 , and make console versions of already finished DNF PC version by Triptych(ex-3dr) and 3DRealms. DNF is a PC game.
Slightly off the point, I was also very disappointed that Wolfenstein didn't seems to get anywhere, as it's definitely one of my favourites. Hey, democracy doesn't always work, I suppose...
I don't think he meant taking 'fun' as in...not fun, rather, what's the last lighthearted FPS you can remember playing? One with jokes, and that wasn't overly serious? I mean, HL2 has it's funny moments, but it is primarily a dramatic sci-fi piece. It's funny:
And is that not -exactly- the state that FPS are in? Hell, two games stand out at me as being exceptions, Portal and Team Fortress 2. Beyond that, everything else is either a war simulator or a sci-fi epic. If Duke Nukem brings the funny, it'll be doing something that's far too rare these days. That's an if however.
Guess what this game is going to be the same as most modern shooters. Looking down the sights, a sprint mode, and I've heard only 2 weapons at a time. Oh and regenerating health. Yeah this isn't a return to form for old style game. Bad GearBox.
I would have bet my life that the punch line at the end was going to be a penis joke, but breasts do it just as well. Also, after years of anticipation, I'm just "meh" for this game.
Hey guys, guess what? the game got cancelled again. Wait, they just found the lead designer's lot iPod. Development is back at it's highest point ever since the announcement.
It dosent matter how horrible or awesome this game is, its going to sell like jesus' memoirs. So when are you Reviewing Starcraft 2?
I like that, telling them to meet the effin' development milestones or face getting reassigned to another cover-based shooter set in either 1940's Normandy or Unspecifiedistan. Or post-apocalyptic Australia populated by Jason Vorhees clones.
I know no one really liked it, but singularity has to be the best FPS single player since the orange box for me. (Its just fun) The story sucks ballz and its too short but i liked how there was a variety of weapons, gadgets and enemys (Most games just have solders, look at crysis)It felt like i was playing the first half life again at times, i think it was what we should be doing for FPS rather then all these crappy realistic ones... But any game with missiles that stick to enemys, been able to blow someones lims off, slowing time, ridiculous weapons, it felt like the 90's and i really, REALLY liked that.
IMHO the problem was a 'must put in THIS game' mentality rather than a 'ok now that looks like it would be good to put in the *next* game' combined with no clear direction as to where the game was going to go. The problem is that there will be hype and there is no way that whatever we get can live up to the hype engine that will be running simply due to game thought to gone down for the count may be released.
I think we'd all like the game to make us eat our words and thoughts. However I don't hold out much hope for that. We'll see. A good way to look at it, if it's awesome then I'll apologize and have myself a grand 'ol time! If it's not good, I'll refer them to your fake review as an example of how it could have been awesome.
I'm looking forward to DNF. I'm sure it won't be nearly as good as it should have been, but, y'know. It's always good to have another mindless intense-fest game. Sauerbraten proved that.
I cannot see the hype in this. How does 13 years translate into good game, let alone great game? If this game doesn't translate into best game ever made the first week in, then let Duke die in pain.
is it bad the every time i saw "DNF" i read it as "Did Not Finish" instead of "Duke Nukem Forever"?
Poor Yahtzee, he's gotta review the same game twice...
I don't know about you guys, but I hope future games will be in the Mass Effect 2 style. Not just regarding gameplay, but story, depth, choice, style. Fallout 3 had something nice going for it as well. I like the whole RPG elements being implemented in FPS, TPS and who knows what else. I enjoyed Serious Sam type games in the past, but I'm over that. I don't want games to go back to their roots. I want games to remember their roots and combine them with new technology to create something new. More of the same isn't better, it's just more. We don't want more of the same, we wan't bigger and better.
Especially seeing as you get to do Part-Time Monster trucking
I'd have to disagree with you there. While Half-Life somehow tried to set that standard that everything needed to have a better story for future FPSes...That's not the only thing that it offered, unlike games like Kane And Lynch.
If Yahtzee reviews this, it'll be entertaining, to say the least.
I would say Gearbox has a secret girl-crush on Valve and isn't sure whether she wants to do her or be her‡. But I would expect this from a lot of development teams, since Valve does good work. I think that Borderlands is an excellent first truly original opus, but then again, I found the same kind of joy in Opposing Force in the living rocket-launcher one feeds and pets when it growfs at you that Mr. Croshaw found in the gun that shoots shuriken and lightning. ...which easily tangents into a rant (diatribe) about really cool bits in games and how a mediocre game can be rendered quite playable and enjoyable if it has but a few of these. But were I on the Gearbox designer team, I'd certainly look into paying Yahtzee's current review a proper nod, perhaps by including some of the elements he mentioned. My faves: ~ A false idenity named Vladimir Lestrade I particularly look forward to implementation of the last one. ‡ And yes, I'm intentionally invoking hot girl-on-girl dev-team action, here.
"(and, personally, I'm disappointed Wolfenstein didn't make it out the starting gates)." Looking back at it, the Wolfenstein review was very informative and very clever, but it wasn't very funny.

I have to admit, I'm kinda lookin' forward to it.
Having never anticipated the game, never looked forward to it in the past thirteen years my expectations haven't risen that high. The only thing I hope for this game is what nearly this entire damn comment line is on about; Mindless ammo spreading fun.
If Serious Sam 2 could pull it off in an era where games where getting serious already, then this game has the potential to bring this back to common life.
