The Escapist Presents: Preview: Xbox Dashboard Update 2010

I don't have the update yet, but from this review:

New UI: Blockier, stockier, and less-fading-ier. I'm not sure that I like it, but I'm not sure I dislike it either. I understand that that wanted things to be easier to manipulate with the Kinect, but I'm still not convinced that all the changes were necessary.

LastFM/Zune: I have Pandora and iTunes, along with connector for my iPod to connect to my sound system. Great for users of those services, but doesn't effect me.

Netflix: Thank you, powers-that-be, for a search feature!

ESPN: Oh, dear. Now my Xbox will be online much more often. Tell me, perchance could you access your fantasy football from that program? Oooo, please tell me yes!

Kinect: Probably the biggest (code-wise) part of the update,. I wasn't blown away by it at PAX, so it's not going to be featured in my living room anytime soon, but I have a feeling my friend who works at Microsoft will be picking it up. So, yea, progress and stuff.

Susan Arendt:

ESPN? Completely free. Well, you have to have an Xbox Live Gold account, but other than that? Free.

ESPN is a Disney owned network. I can tell you Disney doesn't offer anything for free or cheap. I'm willing to bet that the major reason XBL Gold now costs $10 more per year is because of ESPN3.com. Disney has been in major pissing contest mode with several pay tv providers lately because of them wanting fee increases. I have Dish Network and they no longer have several Disney owned networks in HD now because of this. And ESPN placed radio ads telling people to switch from Brighthouse to other providers because ESPN might end up off of Brighthouse because of a negotiation impasse.

My point was that you don't have to pay a fee to watch a game. Unlike much of the other video content accessible on XBL, you just select what you want to watch and watch it. The tradeoff is, of course, that you may not be interested in what's being shown all the time.

am i the only one whose videos keep re-setting themselves after 2 seconds?

Starke:
Anyone else mildly amused by the fact that in the credits it tells us that John Funk is narrating for Susan? :p

curse you ninja's! curse you~~~~~~yeah i noticed....

Is there a way to refuse this update?

Daystar Clarion:
I can't be the only person who never uses any the stuff like zune etc. I have a TV, why would I need that stuff?

I don't really use that stuff either.

OT: I prefer the dashboard the way it is just now to be honest.

I've had the update for over a month now and I actually like it better than the NXE dash because its faster and more streamlined. I agree that have the ability to have different color schemes is almost a must, but if you ask me I think Microsoft is planning on doing this in the future.

Unless this update allows everyone to get access to the features, it shouldn't be forced on everyone.

Like a couple of the comments already, I don't have some of these features as is, yet I get an update for them? ...How would that even work? Would they have to make more than one update?

I do hope it at least starts you off on the "my xbox" tab instead of "spotlight" when you turn your xbox on.

Any changes to the XBLA?

Yeah yeah, that's nice, but what does the sasquatch want to give me? (3:09)

Zero_ctrl:
Any changes to the XBLA?

What about the whole Destination Arcade thing they released a little while ago?

Fisk777:
Hooray more additions that have nothing to do with actual games! I think the new blocky reskin is a downgrade honestly.

Same, not only that, but in my country, we don't get last.fm and Zune sucks so much it isn't worth it.

Agreed, I'm one of those people who doesn't get a lot from them.

Well, I live in Australia. These features, from the looks of things, aren't going to mean anything to me anyway.

Prof.Wood:

If you don't go online then you can pretty much ignore this update altogether.

I live in the UK which uses Sky Player instead of Netflix. Will this be changed in the new update as well?

I only have the US update, so I'm not sure what changes the UK version will have, if any.

Why is it that since I live in norway I have only a few movies to choose from? while you guys have everything? I didn't even know about the tv show function!

I'd be cool if they made that into the default.
It's funny, though.
You can download M-rated content on accounts that normally can't through Destination: Arcade.

So you still can't listen to Last Fm while playing games.

Excuse me but /fail

heh...
most of this stuff, i don't use anyway
...but props on your Netflix search, Susan :D

Because it's shocking how often what you want to see isn't on TV. Or maybe you missed last week's episode (or last season) and want to catch up. Etc, etc, etc.

is that not the point of a DVR?

The new interface looks a bit weird. I'm not exactly fond of the side to side panels. But I could live with it.

Will us Brit's get the ESPN feature, or will we get it removed?

Also, I hope they set a release date, and it looks pretty good and a welcome improvement than the current dashboard.

I'm going to make a prediction here...

Final Fantasy XI and Play Online Viewer will be locked out like the NXE did when it cam out and I'll have to wait a month for someone to work out how to get it to work again!

Also I like the current dashboard look and to be honest I can't see why the Kinect needed a new dashboard to suit it since all they did was change it from the fade back style to a flat line. I also don't know why they don't make it an optional update so that those of us who don't want Kinect any time soon can keep the current dashboard.

Isn't audio quality over headsets supposed to improve with this update? Was that not testable in the preview, or was I sadly mistaken?

When exactly will all of this joy be coming to us?

Or a free online catch-up service like BBC iPlayer or 4oD. Plus most channels these days will endlessly repeat things at some point.

The Zune service will be needing a major update in the UK if they expect my custom. The 360 dash was due for an update, I'm just not 100% sure that this was a push in the right direction. There's a lot of emphasis on Kinect users but let's all be honest...there aren't going to be a whole lot of those around. Not until they release some decent content anyways.

There's also a much better argument to the 'sitting infront of my computer' problem...

Sitting next to my shiny new 360 is a significantly less shiny new PS3 which provides access to the BBC iPlayer. A scant 12.00 got me Nullriver's Medialink software which lets me browse through my iMacs video/photo/music content and stream it directly to my TV through the wireless router. They have a similar program for the 360 (which I'm wondering why I didn't use instead). That means I've got access to significantly cheaper download options - Zune is neither competitive, nor varied and we don't get netflix over here. The software automatically transcodes the video on the fly, so near enough every format is playable.

Add that to my Sky+ box and you're gonna get one fat and lazy bum! As soon as I can re-route the plumbing to put a toilet in the living room I'm set!

any idea why they changed the kickass 3d-ish (old skool 3d as in video game 3d) panels to 2d dull squares?

My guess? To make it easier to use with Kinect.

Digikid:
Hmm....the side to side looks retarded. It was way better "fading into the background". This is a step backwards....not forwards. It would be smart of Microsoft to actually let us CHOOSE what direction we want the panels to go instead.

Otherwise could not give a damn for some stupid sports junk. I hate sports. The Zune channel I was hoping that they would just remove that and go back to the older way of playing videos.

Thank you! The Zune thing just makes browsing through videos much more time consuming because you have to load it. And we still have video marketplace for game videos... which is completely separate and hard to access. wtf?

And I really don't like the new look. It's like going from Windows 7 to Windows 95. Why would you make something look less good? It's also harder to navigate seeing as there are less windows on the screen at a time so you have to scroll just to find out what's further along. Ugh. If this is an optional update, I'm not downloading. (But I doubt I'll have any choice.)

I actually have zero interest in any of the features mentioned in this video.

And can you please tell us what the Sasquatch wanted to give you? That was the most interesting part of the video and you just ignored it.

Well said. I hope that Microsoft is listening and changes it back....which I highly doubt. Its Microsoft. LOL!!!

Wow, John Funk sure sounds a lot like Susan Arendt these days.

Also, I just think the new dashboard, from what I can see in the video, just looks bulkier and, if I'm perfectly honest here, uglier compared to what there is now.

great its updating stuff i never use and fucks up the visuals of the menus.
For once I'm glad my xbox cant connect to the internet now
