Obsidian write good stories? News to me.

Then again KotOR II pretty much raped my childhood, so I'm obviously biased. I thought Fallout 3's story was far better than New Vegas's; but New Vegas had the more content and game-play improvements.

And am I the only one who thinks all of the characters Obsidian makes are confusing, uninteresting, or unlike-able?

God, I think I need to get round to punching Chris Avellone in his face.

And I disagree. They're stories have all been great. With the exception of certain games endings...

KOTOR 2 had a great first and middle sections, bringing much more "greyness" to the series. And I also liked the characters, which were just different from the characters we're used to seeing all the time. I suppose it could push some people away though.

Alpha Protocol is one of the few games where your decisions actually influence the overall story. And the story itself is rather good.

New Vegas I can't really comment on yet, since I haven't played it. But I hated Fallout 3's story. I had to do the main quest in small sections, because if I did a good amount at once I would end up just quitting over the stupidity of it.

The thing about KotOR II is this; it's Star Wars. Star Wars, the franchise that's all about black and whites, good and evil. Since it's inception, it's been about conflict between light and dark. KotOR II just through that concept into the bin. Kreia, supposadly the best character in the game (to many, anyway) was annoying, confusing, and unlike-able; I found her character boiled down to "RARGH... I AM A CYNICAL OLD HAG WHO HATES ALL WHO DISAGREE WITH MY CODE OF CONDUCT!". All the other characters I found unlike-able or confusing.

I even have the restoration mod installed, and managed to get a coherent ending- and I still dislike it. Maybe if it didn't mess with what Revan did after the war... And just cut all ties with KotOR, and called itself another name... I wouldn't be so angry at it.

That's my opinion, anyway.

I never really played Alpha Protocol, so I won't comment on it.

I thought it made perfect sense. It was very serious, intelligent, and well-planned.

Again, subjectivity comes into play... I suppose.

I've never commented on this comic before (even though I read it every week), but man, freakin' hilarious.

AHAHAHA Oh my god. The Capcom hell is absolutely brilliant.

This is one of the best comics I have come across in some time.

KOTOR 2 was a different take on the whole Star Wars story. I for one liked it, as it was different, but I guess it can put people off.

And Kreia was a great character. She didn't care what path you chose, so long as you committed to it. She was there to make you second-guess yourself, to make you really think about what you chose. Thats what I took away from it anyway.

And here's my problem with Fallout 3's plot:

But if you enjoyed it, good on you. I didn't. I felt it tried to take itself too seriously, and flopped. The Fallout games were never about being very serious, they're steeped in dark humor, and Fallout 3 tried to get away from it, and I felt it suffered because of that. What I did enjoy were the environmental set-pieces. The places that tell a story through the surrounding area. I remember walking along in DC, coming across one of those preservation shelters and outside was a skeleton which looked to be trying to enter it, and inside was a mannequin, some alcohol, and some lingerie. Those were really well done.

And I just want to stress, I liked Fallout 3. It was a good game, it just wasn't a good Fallout game.

Yeah, it's all relative to the player, in the end.

And here's my problem with Fallout 3's plot....

Plot holes really grind some people's gears, others they don't.

True enough.

For me, I tend to give games that don't try to take themselves seriously a bit of a pass. They're just trying to be fun, so no big deal if the story isn't all that good.

But if a game tries to sell itself on how great its story is, thats when I look through everything with a damn magnifying glass.

Ah well, to each his own I guess.

The belly-laugh this comic caused was well-earned. Well-played, Mr. Young. Well-played indeed.

Zachary Amaranth:
Also, which option is the Paragon choice?

The bottom one, of course. Renegade Shepherd welcomes punches to his junk.

THEY FUEL HIS RAGE.

Being an Italian, and having travelled my share of Europe, I can assure you Shamus that all the stereotypes are true :)

..Even the french lovers?

Er... Actually, that's the only one I haven't confirmed yet :)
But british cuisine is indeed quite bad, and it's definitely true that us Italians are tossers.

You don't like Meat Pies? Cornish Pasties? Haggis? Scotch Egg? Fish and Chips? Yorkshire pudding? Sunday Roast? Eel Pie? Steak and Kidney Pie? Really bad Curry?

Oh yeah I see what you mean.

And especially the french lovers...

But you forget: in heaven, Bungie makes music and community interaction.

Very clever comic, great job.

You forgot that in hell, they are Marketed by Peter Molyneux

Ha ha ha ha! Bravo, bravo, that was magnificent!

Both the comic and the original joke are brilliant. An excellent strip!

John Funk:
I dunno, I think "I'm an underwater football player created by ghosts who travels through time to fight my dad, who has become Satan" is a better story than "I am a space marine, aliens are bad"...

But this is still one of the best you've ever done, Shamus :)

I gotta agree with this sentiment right here. JRPGs have the absolute best and worst of writing, sometimes (perhaps often!) in the same damn games. The premise is ludicrous, the execution is formulaic, but it's still a damn sight more imaginative that the drivel that [Average Western FPS Developer] spools out.

Just to be clear: Squeenix utterly deserve their places on both lists, but I'm pretty sure I could find and example that would make them a little more like Bioware and Dialog.

Absolutely brilliant, my favourite stolen pixels ever!

Quite simply the best Stolen Pixels comic I have ever seen. Well done, Mr. Young, Well done.

Hehe. I understood which joke this was a variation off after reading "In heaven, the stories are written by Obsi..", and I knew there was a bug-jab at them in there somewhere. :D

Great old joke, great new interpretation. Ever since reading DM of the Rings way back you've always amazed me in how goddammed accurate your jabs can be. :D

On a side note, your version of the joke is way longer and a bit different than the version I've heard growing up. My version was just "In heaven the British do the stand-up, the French do the catering and the Germans do the organization. In hell the British do the catering, the French do the organization and the Germans do the stand-up."

What seems true from both versions is that Brits can't cook. ;)

Sucal:

What on earth does he do in heaven, then?

Excelent job :)

Capcoms cutscenes can sometimes be so bad they are good though, Resident Evil was ace :)

Well Done!

This is your best SP comic, sir. I laughed out as soon as I saw where you were going with it and I laughed out again when I finished reading it and I laughed out again when you pointed out Bioware is in the same place in both.

I don't know if anyone pointed out in the comments but I know a worldwide version of the joke: Heaven is having a British home, a German car, an American's salary, Japanese food and a Brazilian lover. Hell is having a Japanese home, an American car, a Brazilian's salary, German food and a British lover.

I still maintain that Blizzard's release schedule is much worse than Valves.
At least Valve can regularly put out games, even if it's not the one people have been screaming for (episode 3).

HankMan:
"But basically the jist of it is that Italians are all tossers." :P

I was anticipating that...

And also, made me laugh quite hard, how you keep up the weekly funnies is impressive, good stuff!

InterAirplay:

What? we have Greggs, steak pies, and invented the Fish and Chip shop!

Well, I suppose I could have gone for better restaurants during my travels in England.
Unfortunately I was on school trips, and eating fish and chips only for one week straight leaves a REALLY bad impression of the local food :)

Ivan Torres:
Even though its a european saying, I would say that in Heaven the military equipment is made by the U.S. and the technology is designed by Japan.

What's the use of military equipment when you're in Heaven?

Cut scenes are made by Square Enix? Nono, in heaven, cut scenes are made by Blizzard.

Great joke. It could've gone without the random company choices though. They feel like they came off the top of your head rather than from some very deep thinking (the best humour I think has some serious background thought behind it, and maybe this did, but it feels random to me).

For example, you could've had the folks behind Duke Nukem Forever for the Hell release schedule - obviously.

In Heaven,Marketing is done by anybody except.....In Hell,Marketing is done by Bobby Kotick.

And yep,Obsidian's stories are really good, too bad their games are a bug nest. Perhaps they should merge with Bioware, like Square and Enix did....hmmm....Obscureware? Biodian?

demoap:
(no, french aren't good 'lovers', but they make more 'love' than the entire europe)....

Continue à penser comme ça. Les mensonges ne sont pas une bonne manière pour faire une bonne impression à un français.

On comic* It took me several minutes to stop laughing. That was great.

BEST ONE IN THE HISTORY OF EVERYTHING.

Fair enough, that would be like eating at a greasy spoon every single day. No matter what the country, that's gonna get old very fast.

Also, don't try any of our examples. XD

I think its more a case of "I am a space marine, aliens are bad" is at least simple, understandable, and has a logic to it. The other one just sounds like something a 4 year old would put together.
