Right. Gonna read this, then head off to bed.

I've decided that I'm gonna purchase this game on the basis of what The Escapist says so...here goes><.

THE VERDICT: Wow...sounds harsh, but it's nothing I haven't heard before o_o interesting...
I was really looking forward to the single player, too. It's a shame really. And the graphics being bad? That's nothing new to my ears either...this is concerning...

Well, since the multiplayer review is going live tomorrow, we'll see how things pan out from that.
But as things stand...I think I might stick with COD4 and MW2 until I can find a very cheap copy on E-Bay or something. Meeeeep!

Damn...that's....fuckin low

I completely agree the campaign story makes no sense. Another thing what is up with the grenades and explosions sounding like they're underwater/muffled?

Again. Let's take the Pentagon cutscene as an example. After you finally meet Kennedy, you're given your mission and sent to a loading screen. By the time the next level opens, more than 10 minutes have passed since you last had control over your actions in the game and, although you are now able to move your character, you're still not playing the game. You follow your partner, Woods, to a nearby hilltop where he hands you a pair of binoculars and tells you to watch the scene unfolding below. At this point the game takes control again, another cutscene plays out, and then you follow Woods down the hills. Then you stop, unable to move or act, as helicopters fly overhead. Then you walk over to some guards, the game puts a knife in your hand. You use it. You dress as a guard (custscene), then follow Woods again, where you bluff some Russians into thinking you're one of them (Woods does the bluffing), then crouch (behind Woods) while two more of your buddies get to actually kill people while you watch. Then you're moving again, following Woods to a building where, after you wait around and listen to your friends killing some guards, you watch Woods kick open the door and THEN you finally get to fire your gun and play the game. Total elapsed time: over 20 minutes.

If it's seriously like this, and I have no reason to doubt that, then WHY THE HACK does this game get fantastic reviews all over the place.

Those damn super-strictly scripted games... which are less of a game and more of a bad movie -.-
Exactly what most people want it seems, lawl. But yeah it got guns too, and that really is what 95% of the gamers want.

No matter what you say, there will be thousands of people who will claim that it's the greatest game they've ever played. Kind of sad, really...

I dont know. I am enjoying the story and the Graphics seem better than MW2 and the like. I guess reviews are the same as opinions. Just Sounds like someone is drinking his Haterade.

Odd, seems like the first place i've seen that says the story sucks, almost all other places and players say the story is pretty good.

Wow.... just... wow.
I mean, I wasn't exactly going to buy this because of the single player, but I was maintaining some hope that it would actually be, you know, good.
Have this series fallen so far that the single player is worse than an afterthought, but something that no one(developers included) care about?
I mean my god... this review just tore it to pieces.

Treyarch just can't seem to make good games, their last ray of light was snuffed out after Spiderman 2.

Still, all my friends are shifting to BlOps, so I guess I'll have to follow suit or be left alone in a CoD 4 server.

At least there's zombies.

I would like to add onto that with the mission objectives being very vague at times.

There are times where in order to proceed you are required to do something that is not set as objective and you are not told to do it until you have either failed (for not doing it) or have been told by an ally who sometimes "forgets" to tell you.

For example, playing on Hardened there was this one bit where you had to push back some forces for a strike (vagueness is intended to remove the need for spoiler tags) but they spawn fast and infinitely. The game never tells you that you had to stab a barrel and kick it down a hill. It doesn't even be nice and waypoint it.

The time for that was wasted after finding out how to do it.

O_o....Holy mother of monkeys!

If a game is so bad that you have to to start judging it on graphics then by God consider me steered FAAAAAAAAAAAAR away from Black Ops.

Excellent Review Russ! I love how you used the blinding the audience analogy to steer peoples focus away from the crapfest that is this game. If anything this proves to be one of those games that fails when it comes to usingsuch ambiguous visuals.
It's not like fatal frame where it covers up its semi-par graphics to let the player make out what monsters or ghosts are lurking around.

Overall great Job and quick question.

Was the Hand of Fate episode of Game Dogs some kind of end towards season 2!? Or are we just gonna have to wait to see WTF is going on there?!

Have to say, after reading all of the rave reviews of every other critic, this was more than a little jarring. However, it certainly saves me all the time of re-examining my entire worldview, which is something I'd have to do if Treyarch actually made a decent game instead of one that feels rushed, corner-cutted, and flaccid.

Really? Cause it uh, seemed fine to me.

Nothing completely spectacular, but as far as single player FPS's go, its not bad.

Cool. I was completely right when I didn't buy this game and went my my old favorite MOH instead. I, personally, loved MOH, but that's also because I've always liked how the series was handled better than COD in my eyes. I also find it funny that people that called MOH terrible are the ones buying COD, who say its the greatest game ever, and it's really not. Played it at a friends and everything in this review was 100% true. Makes me smile :D

It's sad, I love the escapist, but people take these reviews as if they're only right. I think their shouldn't be perfessonal reviews anymore for any game, only user reviews.

No offense, but seriously, people read this and then say "well this guy says it sucks, so it must suck." Without ever even trying it. People should try games for themselves, not just going off the opinion of others.

I am not saying this review is right or wrong, its someones opinion and I don't want to change that, I just hate when reviewer's opinions are taken above anyone elses.

Edit: Could people stop quoting me?

Ive been saying from the start that Blops would suck. Ive also been saying that Kinect would bomb too, which judging by current sales figures appears to be true

Gamers dont want the same fucking games spat out every year in the same way we dont give a fuck about motion controls

The sooner the industry learns this the better

My fiancee is buying me Blops for Christmas. I'd never willingly pay for a Treyarch game nevermind a Call Of Duty one
(CoD4 I found for PS3 in a skip, MW2 was bought for me by a mate who owed me a shift at work and WaW was given to me by a friend who hated it more than Hitler hated the Jews)

I loved the last bit of the video. And as far as the review itself goes, I'm guessing you guys shouldn't expect a Christmas card from Activision this year.

Very sad indeed. Just looking at this game honestly made me go to Gamestop buy a playstation card and Buy Both Megaman 9 and 10!!

I got Loads more entertainment out of $15 then I would $60. And stil am!

I am Megaman
Here's my Mega Plan
You DIE

well I guess my point has been proven by some of the posts. >.>

So the cut scenes are really hard to watch because it will hurt your eyes, otherwise I actually like the story, though one plot twist can be seen a mile coming. I had a lot of fun with it. Several set pieces were dare I say fantastic.

The shop I work out ran out of copies today. They had over 300 copies in total for PS3 and 360. FML

Aye, I thought the campaign's plot was a lot more interesting and clever than MW2's, and I liked the way they did the whole "most of the game levels are flashbacks whilst he's being interrogated". It tried to do something different.

If Black Ops is shit for just not being the same as every other FPS, then I'd prefer more games to be as shit as Black Ops.

The flashing can make your eyes hurt a little (that stopped for me once I actually put my damn glasses on though :P), but yea, I thought several bits of it were amazing.

Haters gonna hate, I guess.

And user reviews would be different...how, exactly? Assuming, of course, people paid any attention to them, which is all folks are doing here. They're reading the review, and deciding for themselves whether or not they still want to get the game. Paying attention to a professional reviewer and paying attention to an amateur one is no different.

Strangely enough I quite enjoyed the story.
Then again Im one of the odd people who likes piecing odd crap like that together.

It's definately not perfect, I'll agree with that.
I guess it's just my cup of tea.

I finished it today and I somewhat disagree with the review. The story is better then any of the previous games so far(except MW), though it does feel like they were stealing one of the central plot points from Bad Company 2. The only bad voice acting is Sam Worthington's, who at times forgets that Alex Mason isn't Australian and the voice crew didn't feel like making him rerecord the flubbed lines.

I'll give him the Pentagon bit, which feels very restrictive in that it doesn't even let you control the characters walking.

My other complaint is that the SR-71 mission feels kinda gimicky, because you basically play an abbrivated RTS for about 5 minutes.

The game itself is fun though and it has some cool bits. The setpieces aren't quite as good but it is still over the top at times, particulary at the end, when it feels very, very james bondish.

The secret mission, the Pentagon zombies bit is sheer awesome, though.

Come on you didn't even mention the best part of the game! on that computer in the main menu, you can play Zork I! Mother Effin Zork

I respectfully disagree. ok, graphics could've been better, but who cares. I liked the story, it made me scratch my head and go '... the fuck?' at first, but at the end it kinda came together. yes, the flashes are annoying as hell. it as kinda freaky though, something no CoD game has tried before. and yes, the pentagon scene did take a bit too long, but i didn't mind following other characters around that much, it helped build the suspense and i don't want the whole world exploding around me all the damn time anyway. as for the terrible writing and voice acting, I didn't really notice it. I do think they ripped modern warfare 1 and 2 way too much...

the multiplayer seems fun too, though I'm only at level 4 or something, so I can't really comment on that yet.
maybe i'm too easily satisfied, but i had fun with it, so I'm not gonna let you get to me ^_^
EDIT: the patriotism could've been scaled back a little at the end though. I know it goes along with the cold war theme guys, but can i get a bucket please?

So it is basically MGS4?

Black Ops isn't anything special, but really, it isn't that bad. Bad isn't really the right word anyway, it's meh. There's nothing broken really, it just doesn't bring much to the table of FPS.

But I am glad someone finally talked about the constant flashing, jesus, that shit is just irritating.

Soviet Heavy:

Um, I don't know where you got this notion from, this game is so far from MGS4 you might as well be playing Mario.

Opinions seem pretty varied on this game. It's my personal favorite of the CoD campaigns by a long shot. I thought the story was interesting and the settings varied and cool. Couple that with the presentation and I thought it was a winner.

To each their own eh?

thats what it seems like to me also. maybe he just had a bad day.

maybe they woudn't be any better. It's hard to say, but Reviewers unlike User Reviewers are much more well known. So likely less to be heard, which obvious would then it would take in consideration whether or not their would be need for any reviews.

I just think that, people take review's and I myself am guilty of this sometimes, that I take a reviewers opinion for truth and that if they say a game sucks it must suck. I do this often with certain types of games. Though lately I have been trying to form my own opinions.

Now the main reason why I get angry at sometimes reviews, is not becuase of what their opinion is, if they hate a game or like it, thats their opinion (well duh. XD), but sometimes people don't form their own opinions. They look at these and agree with it just becuase they wish to agree with it instead of trying out it for them selves.

a review could say "well this game is really bad" but then the player decides to go out and try it for themselves and discoveres that they like it. I think more people should do that. I write my own reviews at times aswell, I plan to write one for Black Ops and possibly Arcania: Gothic 4. Though even reviewing these, I hope people learn more about the game and then try it for themselves.

No mention of the tie in of the previous story. No glimpse of the multiplayer. Well done. Good thing I go off of this guy's reviews for all of my game purchases.

Really the story is told more interestingly than most. The multiplayer is more customizable than most shooters.

The game isn't bad.

I got and completed black ops on launch day and I wholeheartedly agree. Recent COD games are in their element when you're playing the game and explosions are going off around you, not just watching them and listening to people prattle on about them. However, my biggest issue with the single player is that there are too many moments when you're knocked off your feet. All too frequently your character is knocked over and they have to reach for a gun, etc which seriously affects the flow of the game. Treyarch just seemed to be overusing the best bits from the modern warfare campaigns hoping to capture what made them so good (for example, the ending on the bridge in MW and the gun). This single player campaign just re-emphasised the fact that Treyarch will always be the other COD developer.

Also, if you're meant to be playing the memories of one character why the hell does it jump to Hudson for one mission! Maybe Treyarch realised that their own characters were so uninteresting that they had to change the focus in orer to draw attention away from it.

Fortunately I didn't buy Black Ops for the single player and I only really played through it to get a handle on the controls before I took it online.
