That's a bit rich coming from someone who played only one game on his list.

well sorry that i don't have a super PC or a Cosole

Well OK, it's not as if everyone can be super-well-informed on games, I myself haven't played any on either of his lis-WAIT. Wait, you've never even heard of Metroid?? As in, you haven't heard of the entire series before? Or do you just mean Other M?

EDIT: Also, to everyone in this thread:

Yahtzee on Twitter:
The music in ZP this week is 'Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary' by Purcell. It is not 'the Clockwork Orange music'

nope never heard of it...

this review screamed of charlie brooker

shimyia:

nope never heard of it...

Huh. Metroid is one of Nintendo's most very classic series', one of its most recognised, and one of its most loved. And it was, until Other M, generally regarded to be un-ruined. For a classic series nowadays, that's quite rare.

I myself have only Metroid Fusion, a GBA title. It's among my favourite games.

well im from a shity country and nor nintento nor other consoles sell here. you cant even buy video games which aren't pirate-made...
its hard to be a gamer here :(
my only option is to download cracked games for PC :((((

It amuses me how excited I was as he built up to #1 best and worst there at the end. I was literally clapping my hands together in anticipation.

that background music was really annoying and distracting

i'm rather shocked FFXIII was only #3, i would have thought it would be at least #2 i am never going to buy another final fantasy game ever, FFX was an incredible game, but since then its been going downhill so fast it might as well have fallen off a cliff, i dont even want to know what the next game is gonna be like.

Maybe he will review it this year.

I hope so.

Will he bash it or praise it? He did liked Limbo though.

In a way, I don't care if he doesn't like it. It would make one hell of an episode, I think. And plus, the humour is right up his street.

Zero Punctuation gets better every week!

Alucard832:
lol, he's still criticizing FFXIII when he didn't even play it. What a douche.

Yeah, because a game failing to hold someones attention for a few hours concludes it can't be criticized since they didn't finish it, right? Wait, that's moronic. If a game can't hold a players attention for a few hours then it's an appalling game and should be mocked, as is the case with FFXIII.

What world do you come from? He didn't play it because he can't stand a good game, and apparently neither can you.

I come from a world, far away from your own, in which the concept of subjective opinion realms free. This concept allows people within my world to decide for themselves whether they find a game to be "good", based on their own experiences that they can then discuss via a medium such as The Escapist. It would appear you come from a world ruled by savage Trolls that force you to ignore this concept in favor of demanding everyone else perceive your own concept of "good" as fact, without introducing any counter-arguments or logic.

Nope, its the March from the Funeral Music for Queen Mary by Henry Purcell. An awesomely sombre bit of music from the 17th century Londoner.

dex-dex:
is the negative music the theme for clockwork orange?

4 scandinavian games :D

2 swedish on top 5 and 1 danish.
1 danish on worst 5.. kane and lynch.

Dead rising 2 is the second best game of the year? seriously?

I haven't heard of it before seeing this review, went ahead and tried it, it was a turd!

The game started out fun, but it turned out to be one big never ending series of escort missions, with a timer, with retarded AI!

And why the hell does my steel crowbar break after 20 whacks?

They made a game which has the ingredients of a winner and made it into fail. The most amazing thing is that the game would be so much better if they simply REMOVED things rather then added new things. Seriously, all they have to do is // some code and get a game that is actually good. This isn't a programming failure, its a design failure and it should be listed as the second worst game of the year. Even the force unleashed 2 wasn't as big a turd.

I can't believe Yahtzee gave such a turn second place on best game of 2010.

I was actually going to agree with you on halo reach...and then fable 3...Kane and lynch 2 was a horrible game, but for me Fable 3 and Halo reach truely did kill the franchise for me. I wont buy another lionhead game and won't touch another bungie game because of those 2.

You're dead to me Yahtzee.

Metroid Other M was fantastic. Otherwise I agree with his list of bad games of the year, but I just don't see how you could hate Other M :/

burn e:
couldn't agree more with you Yatzee!

i've played all of the games ecxept: Amnesia

(but i was kind of hoping for assasin's creed brotherhood to be on the top 5 good side)

He disqualified Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and New Vegas because they're too much like their predecessors.

I'm surprised there's no review for Fable 3.

I knew right away he'd be joking about Halo Reach... I mean, in Just Cause 2's review he says that it even made wanton destructino boring which doesn't sound like a GOTY to me, and he says that Halo Reach actually stood up well on single player. Just Cause 2 is so bloody fun though, and I've only played the demo

Edvinas1111:
Why is "Just cause 2" in 1-st place ? ......... JUST CAUSE !!!!! :D

...2!!!!

I've noticed how critics say that Metroid Other M had bad acting and made Samus all whiny and submissive, while fans praise its gameplay and say that you're supposed to follow orders from your superior. Here's my question: Why didn't Samus just say, 'But Dad, there's no way my suit's going to protect me from the harsh environment of that planet (or whatever it was). Shouldn't I put on something more protective?' and then reluctantly obey orders if he says no, instead of just blindly going there without being adequately prepared.

Chaosninja89:
hahaha, kayne and lynch is that bad huh?
I thought he was serious for a second when he said halo reach...
But I personally hated Just Cause 2.....

I knew he was going to put it as the worst game ever reviewed, since he even flat-out said, "There's NOTHING fun about the game."

Opinions: while they can't be right or wrong, there are some really shitty ones. For an example, reflect on your own opinions.

And what defines a "shitty" opinion? When you disagree with it?

Final fantasy 13 was a joke dude now go and wash your mouth out with soap, you really kiss your mother with that mouth

we get it your a videogame hipster.

What's the music that plays when he reviews the bad games?

There were probably worse games than Bioshock 2 and FFXIII (didn't hate them. But felt like something was missing from both of them.), but other than that, the list of terrible games is pretty much right, by me, anyways.

And I can support every top 5 best games of 2010. Because, well, they may not be the best to everyone, but they are all good.

looking back at 2010 I tried out FFXIII and really did wanna like it...
but now I realize that I had stopped playing the game around the 5 hour mark and...yeah I don't really want to touch it again... =/

You just cant argue with the truth..class

Well this is long overdue but sometimes you have to defend yourself if only to give yourself a semblance of self-respect...

"Also that's complete bull. If you're going to say stories need you to feel good in the end, you're limiting stories so much. Ironic you'd use Macbeth as an example when that story does nothing but make you feel awful in the finale. PS, themes and morals are the base for good story, otherwise you're just tossing things at a wall and seeing what sticks."--LackingSaint

When I said "A good story is something that makes you feel good at the end", I didn't necessarily say that it had to incorporate a happy ending (I actually hate happy endings incredibly, so that was missing the point entirely). I meant to say that a good story makes you feel like your time wasn't spent, specifically in this case, your time wasn't spent on listening to someone's bullshit moral message. Endgame didn't make any sense to me, but in the end the experience was so delightful that I, unquestionably, have to praise it.

Also, when you say "themes and morals are the base for good story", I think of James Joyce, a writer who never bothered with the themes or morals and turned out to be one of the 20th century's finest writers. And J.D Salinger. And probably tons of other writers I've never read. Most good story-tellers generally write about humanity, and bother little with morals and themes. It's the critic's job to translate all of that writing and convert it to something usable. (And Joseph Heller, now that I think about it) So that is that. Also Macbeth made me feel happy at the end. He finally stopped being a pussy and accepted his disaster with great courage. An magnificently well-thought tragic hero.

"If your problem is that the main storyline was the /only/ thing, and that you weren't a "grain of sand in a macrocosm" then I'd have to disagree. It's easy enough to just look around and see that the state of the city has changed, that the splicers have adapted and altered the environment to better survive. There are potential stories in every stray corpse you pass. Clearly the developers cared very much and put in a lot of effort to make it seem like the city was still functioning even as it was dying."--Honeyfish

I was trying to relate your experience to Rapture to that of a journey into a mythic land, but I didn't make it easy did I? Sorry? In the first, by the atmosphere and the characters, you were really nothing. You were like Theseus; small in comparison to the massive, bewildering Gods and monsters. Rapture in the second Bioshock was fleshed out--for good or bad--indeed, but it didn't keep that tone. In about every story, every person dealing with the Devil becomes nothing more than a puppet under his control. That's how the first was like; tossing and turning on a wave, never knowing when the lightning strikes. The second didn't seem to grasp that and it failed in my eyes. In the end, I wanted my moment of electricity, a thunderbolt of surprise and anxiety and diminishment (is that a word?), but it didn't come.

I've only played the demo of Just Cause 2, and i love it! The story is bad, the voice acting is laughable, but it all gets drained out by the awesomeness of hanging onto helicopters while shooting them to destroy it. Just Cause 2 obviously is for people who don't love games for the story. This game is for people who love a little bit of crazy grittiness that games originally were.

Agreed.
I got just cause 2 today myself and story seems really weak.
Action may still make the the game worth it's price (19.95e)
But in my opinion it isn't best game released in 2010.

This was first time I bought game based solely on Zero punctuation review.
should have probably checked other sources too.

I guess the experience is different for people...i also forgot to mention how big the world was.

Call me crazy, but I liked The Force Unleashed 2. The core game was extremely short but, as a avid Star Wars nerd, I rather enjoyed the story and think that if anything that was the game's strongest point next to its visuals. With the DLC being a dollar that tacks on another couple hours to the gameplay. So it's about the length of any other Hack'n'Slasher with core and DLC included.

Along with the frequent gripes of Bioshock 2 being on the bad list and Just Cause 2 being number 1 on the good list, I agreed with his selections mostly.
