What Minecraft Is Missing

And maybe water should be able to flow through doors as well.

I disagree the point of the door is to keep things out so I think if you did want water or lava to flow through it should be like a grate rather than a door.

standokan:
I agree with everything except the metal detector.

Agreed, the soil idea was perfect though.

If it makes anyone feel any better, at least the blue dye rarity issue is historically accurate =P

Since there's no easily obtainable blue pigment that is so bright and *blue* (if you think about it indigo is probably the closest, but it is still quite purply unless very dilute). the only way to get sky or royal blue colours was to grind up gemstones like Lapis Lazuli - which makes the colour ultramarine. This was so rare and precious back in the days before synthetic colours that it was worth more than gold, was the reason renaissance artists needed rich patrons (Borgias, Medicis, etc), and was the reason it was only really used for the robes of figures like Jesus or, more particularly, Mary.

Sorry...tangentially relevant historical lecture. =P

Since, in Minecraft, you're using pre-coal tar dye methods for getting all the other colours...

I think a way to make robots or something to help you do some of the mining or something, because I kinda got lonely

I want furniture, lots of furniture i don't wanna arrange a bunch of wool block and pretend it's a bed anymore.

General Vagueness:
"Bursts of coloured confetti and sounds of fanfares and rounds of applause playing whenever you successfully kill an exploding bush monster before it gets to you.

That would be nice."

sounds like someone played a Halo game with Grunt Birthday Party on

There's actually shitloads of games that include that. TF2 comes to mind.

I'd like to be able to mix materials when building tools, like a 2/3 iron and 1/3 diamond pick/axe/shovel/hoe. Ones like the aforementioned would be more durable than a normal iron pick, but still not as durable as a full diamond pick. There could also be certain limitations, like you can't do a wood and diamond pick, you have to have iron or above to mix with diamond, etc.

Problem is if Notch put all of the ideas people come up with into the game it would lose its challenge. sure some things would be better such as more blue dye but a metal detector or other type of detector would make frequent players stand up and shout "FUCK!!!!" for all the hours spent trying to find the ore only to have a new, easier way of finding these ores. The satisfaction of finding diamond would be non existant and people would find the game too easy to play any longer.

Minecraft is balls.... Less balls would fix it....

When you play minecraft you realise that your shoes need cleaning because that would be more fun. When minecraft is "fun" you know you should end your life. In fact it's the perfect litmus test for euthanasia.

http://www.minecraft.net/help.jsp <-- Somewhat a tutorial, It is out of the way I know. hopefully notch will add an integrated tutorial some time, along side sluice gates.

I don't hate on your black ops/JRPG/RTS/[insert Generic game type here], you don't hate on my mine-crack. Deal?

Maybe it's just been a while since I tried this but I don't think water or lava will flow through an open door. I wouldn't want it to flow through a closed door obviously. If the doors let water in when open then I'm set. I hope the visitors to my house are ready to have lava dropped on their heads.

I agree with the sluice gate but then I haven't tried to make one so it might already be possible without any hassle.

I play this game online, with monsters off, and on a server that's practically creative mode so the rest of the stuff I couldn't really care about.

All in all from these suggestions I'd say, "not being beta" is what yahtzee thinks minecraft is missing.

about the detection system.... there are Mappers for that....

Ahh, okay fair enough. I guess that would be a good trade, but you know still beta.

I'd like a Compass built into the dsiplay screen; I havent found the materials to build one ingame yet and I'm fuckin tired of digging under ground for 40 minutes then tunneling your way out only to discover that you have no fucking clue where you are.

Like the idea of metal detectors or hints to large Iron/gold veins.
Also a mob of like wandering bandits would be good. They could like make camp around rich mines as an indicator.

I personally would like a locomotive. I have multiple little projects all around my area but it takes forever to walk to each one... and I don't have enough steel to make drops for every rail system... and I can't figure out how to make powered minecarts work.

Everything Yahtzee says seems agreeable.

I like that Yahtzee describe's Minecraft as not being a game. Given that part of Ebert's rant against gaming was that it is always goal oriented and thus cannot be art, a game like Minecraft which apparently is all about creation with occasional exploding hedges, that seems a lot closer to art, and as has been said, no goal. Thus, a game with no goal but still creating art.

In other words, Yahtzee is perpetuating Ebert's rant about gamers, whereas anyone willing to accept that maybe Minecraft can be a game that is just the wide open sandbox, well that's a game that might be art.

In short, Yahtzee is the one now behind the times, ranting about the good old days.

No offense to you Yahtzee, I respect you and all but...

On point number one and two, well, that's what makes minecraft so much fun. It doesn't really give you a direction, like the early man you have to find things out for yourself and learn how things work, I guess if it was optional to view the tutorial that would be alright, but that sense of slowly learning by yourself is all the more rewarding. On the ore detection system, hunting for ore is a lot more fun then instantly knowing where it all is, there's just something alluring about the hunt to find ore rather then the actual ore itself, if everyone knew where diamond was, it wouldn't make it feel that special when you find your first huge diamond cache.

a crossbow for S&Gs. and more uses for gold, it is so rare yet completely useless. hey guys! i just used 4 gold bars to make a clock. now what? and being able to teleport to the nether world in multi-player would be nice (i know thats difficult to do but its worth a shout-out) but its still an awesome game.

use the double minecart trick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzGcirn15to it takes advantage of a popular glitch

I think a metal detector would be extremely useful (even one that gave a vague idea of where to look.. like a special compass). Otherwise I find myself wandering and hoping to find a glitchy hole going all the way down so I can see where the goods are (hehe found some diamonds the other day this way).

I don't think that they need to make the game any easier. You can already find a group of diamond about ever twenty minutes to a half-hour if you shaft mine. If you want easier just use mods. I agree that blue dye should be more common though. I've been planning on doing some pixel art without an inventory editor and...yeah, it's going to take longer than I thought.

Edit: Just thought of something I do want. A range weapon that shoots straight. You find out very quickly just how pitiful the bow's range is when you try to build a railway through the nether.

Hmm I like all these suggestions. I think it's time zombies dropped something more interesting than feathers too and let's find some more uses for gold!

There is actually a mod for the sluice gate, called floodgate. (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=93171) There's a link to it there, and to alot of other useful mods too, probably a mod for everything you mentioned.

What does everybody have against the idea of an ore detector? Do you guys LIKE having to spend hours digging around randomly and praying you'll find some ore?

Or is it because that would make the game less based around dumb luck?

EDIT: Also I love how Minecrafts grind is "making you earn your rewards" (that you might not get because you dug in the wrong direction) while the grind in MMOs (where a reward is guaranteed eventually) is "Artificial Padding" Hypocrisy much?

Bursts of coloured confetti and sounds of fanfares and rounds of applause playing whenever you successfully kill an exploding bush monster before it gets to you.

That would be nice.

I wouldn't have minded that when I beat Borderlands...

How about another freaking use for Gold? Or a single use for Gravel?

Both are fairly useless.

I've got one for Gold, actually:

Torch - Gold - Torch
Gold - Gold - Gold

Would make a Chandeleir.

Corwynt:
How about landmines? You could use them to fuck up enemies. Oh and some fences with sharp spears sticking out so if and anemy fails to jump over it takes damage.

Place a pressure pad on top of a TNT crate. Job done.

Hehe, i'll only say one thing, and that's commenting on the last request, get a diamond sword, run towards it when it gets relatively close and as quickly as possible hit it twice with the sword and you got yourself some sulfur :P Or alternatively if you're not as suicidal as i am when playing minecraft, feather + stick + flint = arrows, two of each should be enough to get enough arrows to shoot the green cocks down and bows are simply enough 3x string and 3x sticks ^^ Of course i'm assuming you already know all this since you were playing it for some time ;>

Hate to burst your bubble but tnt can only be made by materials either gained from a ghast or indeed, an exploding green cock =/

Jinjiro:

Jin's Creeper Slayin' Tutorial:

What you'll need;

- 4 dirt blocks
- 1 TNT

When the creeper is running directly towards you, quickly build a vertical square between you and him, out of the dirt.

[][] - Dirt
[][]
===== Ground

The creepers don't know the 'go AROUND the dirt' tactic of getting you, so said wall should keep him in place, pressing his face into your awesome mudshield in fury. Now, place the TNT on the ground on your side of the square, and back away in a straight line, keeping the middle of the dirt-square between you and the creeper at all times. As you back off, hit the TNT.

Collect your free sulphur.

But gods help you if there are two of them.

Uh, that's horrible. You're wasting tnt to collect sulpher to make tnt. A more proper way to do that with 4 dirt 2 sand.

You

===== Ground

And then that indignant little shit finally stops trying to jump up to reach you drop 2 sand off the side on top of him. While under those two block he takes damage from being crushed under all that sand until he dies, break your way back to the ground and collect. This work on zombies and spiders too if you can get the spiders to stop climbing up to you. And spiders only need 1 block. Although they're more likely to die from the sword swings and the fall damage of being 4 blocks up. I usually go out at night with a stone sword, stack of dirt and sand to go hunting for them that way. The only thing I run from is skeletons because I typically only go out with a sword and leave my bow in the cave for digging.

I've been playing Minecraft since the alpha, and even paid for it as I enjoyed it so much.

A few little changes would indeed be nice, and I think Yahtzee has hit a few little ideas. I would really like a trapdoor.

And as for a metal detector of some sort for ore would be rather nice, something akin to a geiger counter that ticked the closer you got.

Overall minecraft is good fun, but not for everyone. But then again isn't that everything?

Killing bush monsters would be better with the Final Fantasy 1-6 victory theme.

Digging toward that watery/moaning noise to find a cave isn't dumb luck. And even if you do decide to keep on digging trying to find a cave, it might take you what, five to twenty minutes at most? If thats still not good enough for you, go walk around on the overworld a bit. Won't take long at all to find some adventure. And who ever said reward isn't guaranteed? Are you saying that mining does not eventually guarantee five stacks of cobblestone, which can be used to make a shelter(AKA - Reward).

And FYI, you don't HAVE to mindlessly dig to enjoy minecraft. I, for example, don't build anything major at all but simply explore the terrain. I may go ahead and explore that cave I just found, and prepare to fight various mobs. The most grinding I have to do here is getting a few blocks of wood to make a door and to block of the entrance to the cave, so that enemies won't get me from behind. Which begs the question, how you played Minecraft at all, or done anything else other than what you have seen people do?

And to make your whole argument invalid at some point in time, I have heard there will be an updated version of "creative mode" which will feature everything Minecraft has now and will have in the future.
