Most Anticipated Games of 2011

The games you are (or should be) looking forward to in the last half of 2011.

Is it sad that the only one I have my eye on is Deus Ex: Human Revolution?

I want something you forgot. Tropico 4.

I see a disturbing lack of Space Marine in that article. We must cleanse it!

so 13/15 of the games are sequels.

that's sad, really really sad.

I forgot about that one. That makes 4 then.

Space Marine
Arkham City
Skyrim
Saints Row the third

Since when was the new Zelda coming out on 18th November!? How did I miss that announcement?

Games I'm actually looking forward to this year: Catherine, The Last Guardian

Wow... im not really bothered about any of these... except maybe Gears 3 as its fun to play with my bro and our friends. I suppose Batman will be fun to watch and its funny to see Twisted Metal making a comeback.

My most anticipated are Deus Ex 3, Skyrim, Uncharted 3, and Saints Row 3.

I wish I Am Alive would come out a some point though. I really want that game.

Also, Prey 2.

Prey 2 because it seems like you play Boba Fett in a Bladerunner-esque setting with a mix of Deus Ex and Mirror's Edge for gameplay. Hell yes I want that.

And Space Marine. Because god damn that looks fun to play.

Oh, and Serious Sam 3. No cover, all man.

Seriously though, there's been a heck of a lot of Space Marine news lately and I'm disappointed at the lack of coverage.

Sucks for them, since I'm not getting the sequels to games I already have. Saints Row The Third attracts me, but only because nothing else has its level of insanity. Also, Dead Island seems to play like DNF with zombies and barely any toilet/sex humor.

Saints Row: The third is the game I'm looking forward to the most. Skyrim's gonna be cool but really I'm kinda wary of the hype. CoD: MW3 looks kind of boring and I HATE Gears of war because of it's cliche abuse. Dead island is a nonstarter for me because zombies have been done to death. Catherine looks fun in that Japanese-super-hyper-weird-time way but I'll probly play it once and be done with it.

It's just about two a month for me. First is Deus Ex, the only one that month on the list. Then Dead Island and Gears three. The month after, Rage at Batman... er, Rage and Batman. Finally, Skyrim and Zelda. A few others have peaked my interest, but I won't rush out to buy them.

All the AAA FPS games we are getting in 2011, and they still add resistance 3! Honestly, is anyone going to play it? I'd rather play Skyrim, and I thought Oblivion was the most overated game of all time!

Cliche? How is Gears Cliche? Have you actually played it or are you basing it off of just videos and pictures?

Fuck. Ok hopefully I will sell my calf for about 500 bucks so I can get most of these games and MORE or at least just the Collector's editions of a few games :P

SHIT I forgot about the Vita. Fuck.

I've got a lot to look forward to here:

Catherine

Dark Souls

Innocent Sin
Uncharted 3
Gears 3
Saints Row 3 (sensing a pattern here)

Not sure about Deus Ex. We'll see, I guess.

How many people care that Modern warfare 3 is coming out, because I don't.

DARK SOULS. DARK SOULS. DARK MOTHERFUCKING SOULS. I cannot possibly be more excited. Demons Souls is probably my favorite game of this generation... it's almost perfect in every way, and From Software is a fucking amazing dev team. I just cannot wait for Dark Souls.

that's sad, really really sad.

How is that really, really sad? A great, fun game is a great, fun game... regardless of whether or not its a sequel. I mean, some of the greatest classics in the entire fucking medium are sequels. WHY? WHY IS THIS SAD? The logic in this post is just beyond me. Is it "cool" and "edgy" to hate sequels or something?

Honestly, I don't really care for many of the games in that article. I'm looking forward to Disgaea 4 and maybe Skyward Sword, and that about it.

The list of my most-anticipated games of 2011: Catherine, Persona 2: IS, and Devil Survivor 2. I also want Digimon Re:Digitize, but I think that's 2012.

No idea how Zelda made it on there when Space Marine didn't.

You know what's sad? I believe Rage and Dead Island were the only original games in that list.
Most others are sequels or part of a franchise in someway, not that it is a bad thing, but I was hoping to see new games that I was unfamiliar with. Oh well, most of those games are on my "Things to buy" list.

...I saw some good games there but none of them are on my "must buy" list. Like, none of them.

Sad that I'll have to wait till the end of the year for something else to catch my eye...

I dont see El Shaddai on this list. Figures, everyone is too rapped up in sequel excitement to give any new creative games a chance.

Is it me or does Rage have a visual style similar to Oddworld: Strangers Wrath?

where the hell is the new ace combat or the new heroes of might and magic or space marine or starfox?

Dark Souls and Deus Ex: Human Revolution are the games I'm looking forward to. Battlefield 3 and Space Marine are also musts for me once I get a better computer.

it's beyond you? you don't get why some ppl would prefer fresh game play over unending rehashes of the same formulas and IPs?

it has nothing to do with being cool or edgy, I just wish there was more variety and creativity within the industry and the press that covers it.

Sure, there's been lots of great and classic sequels and some of these games might become that...but 13 out 15, to me, doesn't indicate a very healthy industry...many of these seem like completely phoned in attempts at milking something dry.

you certainly don't have to feel the same way, but if this kind of sentiment is "beyond you"...well, that's something else to be sad about I guess.

Such a sentiment is beyond me because your logic is flawed at a very basic level, since you seem to imply that a sequel cannot be fresh or innovative, and that all sequels are rehashes of the same formulae. I fail to see how this is a valid statement, as there are tons of sequels that build upon their original to create something wholly new and creative that could not be achieved with a stand alone entry in a new IP. This argument does not imply that ALL sequels fall under this category, mind you, but it is outright foolish and simply wrong to somehow believe that sequels cannot present someone with a fresh experience, or that they cannot be creative in themselves. The exact reasons that you posited as to why new IP is important can be garnered from a sequel just as effectively.

Thus is why I cannot help but to cast serious doubt upon your overall assessment that it is "unhealthy" to have a large number of sequels. I fail to understand this belief that a fresh experience cannot be delivered via sequel for the exact reasons I outlined above. Even further, sequels have been a "proven" business model, in which a publisher and developer can assuredly make a solid return on their product. I fail to see how publishers and developers engaging in techniques that will assure that they can continue to make games, and perhaps even make "new IPs," is considered unhealthy. If anything, that is the signs of a very healthy industry, speaking from a purely business perspective.

Ultimately, video games aren't really movies... they're different media. Video games are significantly sequel dependent: the industry always have to be quite forward. It's simple blind nostalgia to somehow deny that this industry has always had a significantly greater affinity towards sequels than other comparable media. The conclusion I cannot help but to reach is your disdain towards sequels is unjustified. Despite the fact that you deny it, I cannot help but to feel that your hatred of sequels is done out of the pure motivation to be "edgy" or "cool," as I previously cited.

I apologize for sharing my reaction to the list.

3 games for me:

-Deus Ex 3
-Saints Row: The Third
-Dark Souls

'Tis gonna be an awesome year

And I see a lack of Serious Sam...

And why isn't Subversion on this list, might I ask?

But seriously, I've got 6/15 on my watch list.

I've got some bad news for you mate. The Last Guardian has been pushed back to the later half of 2012.
