Congrats on getting the job! I'm also pretty curious to see what these new ideas you've got are...

Intriguing...

It's best not to dwell in the past.

The Escapist is happy to welcome you as Editor-in-Chief, Steve Butts. I remember reading some of your past articles, and they weren't half-bad. I'm sure the Escapist will continue to blossom and thrive under you.

Grats on the new job, Steve.

Are you, like, the new boss of me now?

I'm looking forward to see what the future brings to my start up internet page :D

I'd say welcome to the Escapist, but as you have mentioned, you've been around for a while now and you know what the deal is. Changes are scary, especially the ones that we don't what they are. But change can also mean a step back. Change can mean bring back insightful commentary of Shamus Young or the shamelessly slapstick Doraleous and Associations (Johnny Ethco and Co.).

Let's see where you lead us, Captain.

Well then, lead the way, Mr Butts. I'm looking forward to seeing what direction you'll be taking the site in.

Is that a Ding! I hear?

Gratz. kkthnxbai~

I think most of us will miss Pitts, but I could not think of a better replacement. I look forward to seeing how good a job you do.

On the downside, though, does this mean you won't be writing anymore stuff for the newsroom?

EDIT: Just realized; we're going from Pitts to Butts. *juvenile snicker*

Though for me, it's sort of surprising still that Russ Pitts has left.. but no worries. I've known you a bit through some of the activities you let us engage in (like certain Quizzes along with Articles). So I welcome you as our Editor-in-Chief, hoping I can support in any way I can (besides just being an active member posting and stuff) :}

Well Steve I can't wait to see what you will bring here, and I'm all excited.

And congrats on the new job!

With a fellow Steve in charge, things can only go well.

Good luck in your new position!

can you give us tl;dr version?

A fellow student of military history as the EiC of The Escapist? Wonderful!

Which era of military history do you enjoy most, Fearless Leader?

See, some of this is is concerning me. Before I go on let me say that this is more about the state of 'gaming' that Steve reflected on in the last few paragraphs, and barely at all about Steve's ability as an editor. Steve--I look forward to the direction the site takes under you.

Moving forward: I feel like "gamer" needs a new word. 'Moviegoer' can, also, apply to anyone. Someone who catches the latest Sandler flick when they remember to is just as qualified as a rabid fan of Nicolas Winding Refn who will go out of their way to catch a midnight showing of Drive (Projecting? nah). I'd also say they're equally qualified as good people, but I'd call only one of them a cinephile, and therein lies the tiny, semantic problem. I feel like readers of The Escapist are the cinephiles of our medium, rather than just the moviegoers.

I feel (and this may be my preference, far be it from me to tell you or anyone else how to run your site) that The Escapist resembles Film School Rejects more than, say, Variety or Entertainment Weekly. I say this mostly because The Escapist and FSR are the only entertainment publications I regularly read, and both of them for very similar reasons. They're both thoughtful and entertaining sites that give much more time to craft and inventiveness than hype and economic weight, and every time I read that we must give equal thought to the Angry Birds and Farmvilles of the gaming world, I'm put a bit at unease.

Angry Birds is a game, and a well made one at that, just like Eat, Pray, Love was... Okay, bad analogy, but they're both the popcorn fodder of their worlds. Angry Birds provides joy and distraction for minutes at a time until I hit a structure I can't knock down. I put the game down and am left unmoved and unaffected. And honestly, there's not too much more to say about it. It's certainly not shit, but it's no Shadow of The Collossus either. There's room for Angry Birds and SOTC in the world of gaming, just as there's room for the discussion of both. I've always felt that the Escapist valued the latter much more than the former, and that's why I've been going to this site for--Christ--almost 3 years now.

This may just be fretting, but I want to be able to come to the same place and to the same people--to a degree, obviously--for the insight I've valued for those years.

Captain on deck!

/salute

Level up!
Congratulations on the job, long live the king.

Honestly my only real changes would be, reverting to a non-numeral based scoring system for reviews (screw metacritic, I used to tout the Escapist to my friends because they didn't use numbers... that changed), and reigning in the misleading 'news' headlines (and snide bias remarks in articles) that department puts out far too often.

Welcome, lord of us.

Treat us well, and the same will be done to you... or the other way around...

"From the ashes, a fire shall be woken. A light from the shadow shall spring. Renewed shall be the pen that was broken. The crownless shall now be king"

Slightly modified for suitability reasons.

grats on the promotion steve! i remember back when you started here, writing news and articles. i could tell you were gonna be good for the site. the escapist picked a good replacement for russ.

...not to mention you both have last names that make for great jokes. ;-)

Quote: "You won't find here ... reviews where the commentator's personal likes and dislikes masquerade as actual criticism."

Okay this made me lol a bit, because the vast majority of this site's traffic is initially brought by Yahtzee, who is the very definition of a reviewer whose "personal likes and dislikes masquerade as actual criticism". Now to be fair he also brings up a lot of excellent points and has a great deal of insight to share, but ... still lol.

Note: I happen to loooooove Zero Punctuation and it's the reason I even know about this site, so if the ultra heavy handed mods could refrain from banning or warning me, that would be awesome (a spade's a spade).

Wait, you've only been on here for a year? I could have sworn you were here when I joined...

Anyways, good luck!

"You won't find one-sidedly optimistic previews here, or reviews where the commentator's personal likes and dislikes masquerade as actual criticism."

Did anyone else immediately think of Yahtzee, lol

Oh, and congrats on the promotion, person who's name I'll never stop finding hilarious.

Yahtzee himself has made it very, very clear- he's not a reviewer, he's a critic.

OT: Congratulation Steve, now maybe you'll be a bit more receptive to my demands? I was trying to get Russ to give me control over your servers and funding for a secret volcano lair, but my lunch-meat-ification ray was still a prototype back then.

TL;DR, I need a 100 billion dollars or you'll be turned into smoked deli ham. Literally. By Monday.

EDIT: And you're next, whoever holds the rights to Austin Powers! Not letting me embed videos! Phlakes will have his revenge (and some nice cured salami)!

Ooo! New Guy means hazing time! I'll get the donkey!

Good luck wargames guy!

Insert butt joke here to test level of moderation risk.

Heh, Wargames Guy has a nice ring to it.

Congrats and good luck!

off topic: The only thing I've heard about the dot-com crash is that it hit a lot of companies like a brick to the face.

I'm genuinely curious, how much can we read into this switchover as being from the same financial problems that cause the Escapist not to pay several of it's contributors?

How bad is your financial situation, exactly? I understand if you guys don't want to release any specifics, but I would be genuinely sad if this site disappeared.

Funny that such a critically regarded site can still be in this sort of financial trouble. Overspending or under-advertising?

May the great media gods grant you much success, man of unfortunately hilarious last name.

Whenever I see this kind of article the first thing I do is:
Ctrl + F, "deliver the same high quality content you've come to expect"

and wouldn't you know it, most of the time it's there.

OT: Interesting to see a new Editor-in-Chief.

At least I have a vague idea of who you are and what your contributions were to the Escapist. Good luck

Well, now that you're in the Captains chair will you start cackling maniacally?

Oh and congrats, you deserve it Steve! :)

Hey Steve. I hope your first action as king is to remove all warnings from everyone, youknow. To show that you care!

Ehemn. Congratulations on the job. Read some of your articles they were great.

Congratulations Steve~!

After hearing you throughout the various podcasts I have to say, I'm really looking forward to where you'll take the site. If all goes well, I'll be joining the publisher's club around Christmas time in support of you and the rest of the site~!

Best of luck with your new job. : )
