Critical Miss: Deus Ex: Rodent Revolution

 Pages PREV 1 2

This is why the star rating system is BS. Deus ex is a great game, but one issue can drag it down to four start. Pick a game that is not as good overall with deus ex and fewer flaws and it gets 5 stars, despite being the weaker game. Seriously. You cannot give an overview of something as complex as a game with a system as weak as this.

Wubwubwub. The LRR crew will be pleased.

I personally would have given it three. The boss battles are just the most glaring flaw, there are plenty more.

Kimarous:
"Jensen, if you try to use that CASIE mod on me, I will hit you."

"I... wouldn't dream of it." >_>

The same thing popped into my mind reading this, heh. Maybe if it didn't release large smelly plumes of gas then Jensen could actually work with it...

OT: No, no, no. The Rohiptron chemicals were the *next* tier of augmentations, and they are dispensed via the finger into beverages. Silly comic-ers.

A lot of people complained about the boss fights, I haven't played this yet (Still hasn't arrived yet) but I'm hoping they won't bother me too much.

Good grief, how many marshmallows does a hot cocoa need?

MeTheMe:
Good grief, how many marshmallows does a hot cocoa need?

As many as you can fit and still call it hot cocoa. Or you could do the Bart Simpson and have your marshmallow absorb it all and give you what looks like a goddamn tasty marshmallow lump.

I have to admit, I loved the CASIE mod. It was worth it, all the way. Though I didn't use it on the woman you give the data disc when working for Hugh Darrow. It's a shame, but oh well.

When did Malik tell you not to use the CASIE aug on her?

Yeah, from my observation, the Boss fights (in addition to shorter length than Deus Ex, and being easily able to get ALL augments by the end) are the only real thing keeping DE:HR from achieving perfection.

Here's a tip, Square Enix: if the game allows a player to go through the game using different paths and skill sets, make it so they can get through the ENTIRE game thusly. It's not even that the bosses couldn't be there. Just make it so they can be taken on in ways other than just single combat. Oh, and make them important to the plot.

Minor Spoiler Alert: What was the deal with the teleporting one, anyway? Did she ever get a backstory? No? Well, that's unsatisfying.

Here's a tip: bring at least one lethal weapon. You can get through the second boss with a pistol, provided you use the stun gun first. The first boss, though, may require more firepower.

Essentially, just remember that sooner or later, you'll need to straight up fight some guys, no matter what playstyle you go for.

Now I want to go to costco and buy a human-sized bag of marshmallows.

Buyer review from robojensen95:
Wanted girl pheronomes, got hamster. That is not what I asked (which is to say, I never asked for this). Would not buy again.

Erin needs to seek therapy.

... Better yet, she should have a class on how to see video game characters in real-life. I would kill for that kind of ability.

Keldon888:
He didn't ask for this...

What a shame.

There's no evidence supporting a pheromone for humans, Stephen Fry said so.

I was unaware that Adam Jensen was a creepy mexican. Now I know.

Question: Is his use of the word bitches suppose to suggest he's a jerk or taken as acceptable seduction banter?

interesting, ive used things claiming to be pheromones and they work quite well so i don't know what hes talking about frankly

Meh grenades.

Just stock up on frag grenades, breeze through the first boss.

He was talking about the fact that scientific evidence for those colognes/perfumes is really weak and odds are if you're seeing an effect it's due to confirmation bias (you expect it to work so you're more on the lookout for sexual cues and will automatically attribute it to the pheromones) and placebo (most obviously there's a psychological effect of giving yourself a perceived "edge" which is liable to put you into a certain mindset along with making you more confident, which can pay off in a whole host of subconscious body language and cues; there's also the chance of an actual physiological response because the human brain is bizarre like that).

Saying human-pheromones don't exist is probably a bit hyperbolic though - it's a fair while since I looked into this stuff, but there are some effects that could be logically be attributed to pheromones (menstrual cycles synchronising is the most obvious one), and IIRC there are a couple of studies out there that indicate that olfactory cues contribute to sexual attraction, but it's more complicated than "This particular chemical makes you sexy" - apparently women tend to be more attracted to the smell of men with the biggest genetic & immunological difference from themselves, which makes a fair degree of sense.

I thought Deus Ex would be better off not bothering to mention pheromones with the CASIE augment anyway - the way the pheromone option works is more like the augment analyses body language and gives you a psycho-analytical edge anyways, so why not go with that?

agreed, there are allot of things you can do with just a camera and heart-rate monitor on someone
but then, that doesn't make for a good game i guess
the same could be said of the way Jensen doesn't actually hack anything, but edios can hardly leave a hacking manual in a game..

it's interesting you should say about the immune-defence thing, because i can smell when people are ill too it's a subtle burning irritation smell, a bit like over the top incense but very much weaker
i've always wondered why and now i know, thanks

lastly, i'm fairly sure pheromones ( or at least chemicals that alter brain activity ) exist there are alot of sites like this one:
http://pherolibrary.com/human-pheromones/copulins.htm

that list endlessly the same set of pheromones and their supposed results, i could quite easily believe them and it's not like they're, themselves trying to push products though, obviously other company's would benefit from them doing this, so you could easily argue there's motive for some level of deceit

also, like you say the human brain is a bizzare animal, it could well be you could influence it with the right drug ( truth serums anyone? )
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_drug

also, pretty untested waters
i guess it's up in the air, there's no real reliable research anywhere for or against
so.. yah.

#edit#
bit of googleing finds this:

apparently there is some research, but it's still a bit non specific

TheYellowCellPhone:
I cannot take my eyes off of the glasses.

They look so strange, you can't have regular black glasses, you need to add this distracting yellow streak in it.

I think they make him look like some sort of freaky insect monster.

In the words of King Kai.

"GOD DAMNIT GEORGE TAKEI!!!"

"Yaaaaarg Let me out!"

"Shut up Bojack!!"

Points for Dragon Ball Z Abridged reference.

OT: Having a fancy rat hump your neck-slot is probably not healthy.

Yeah, but the overall experience was better than many games that manage to inoffensively trundle up to 4 stars. You can't assign a flaw or flaws an arbitrary number, as people will dislike them different amounts.

Grouchy Imp:
Rohypotron. It's the new Persuadotron.

You know Sarif's secretary has one of those CASIE implants, right?

Ahhhh, Syndicate. A strangely apt comparison for "Deus Ex" (remember the agents in brown trenchcoats?) And the "Persuadotron", the first time I ever learnt what a "game-breaking" weapon was. The memories!

As far as I'm aware, Erin (and by extension I) has only judged two games with the rating system twice now. Once for Deus Ex and once for Okamiden, which got a 3 as I recall. You can't compare one site's rating system to another, even if they use the same numerical system. It's not an exact science and each rating is unique to the reviewer in question.

And soon to be joining the FPS crowd, apparently. I find it hard to see how that would work technically whilst still being true to the original, but I suppose if done with a Deus Ex vibe then it could work. In an ideal world, I'd like to see Rainbow Six squad based combat in a Deus Ex setting with the original Syndicate research and upgrade systems during mission downtime. Not gonna happen of course, it'll just be a crappy shooter that puts its grand-daddy to shame, but until it comes out at least I can dream...

"Shit."

Did you check the auctioneer's rep first?

Bah guns ... I just use the Typhoon.
That thing owns boss fights in seconds.

Artificial pheromones smell like kilbasa sausage. Just counter his attempt with a loving dash of bear-mace.
