Extra Punctuation: Shooters of Yore

Infernai:
Daikatana is the worst game Ion Storm and John Romaro made, ever, of all time. It is reviled amongst gamers and is easily seen by many as one of the worst First Person Shooters ever created, and for good reason.

I suppose you haven't played it past the first half-hour, have you? Well whatever. I see nobody has. NOBODY.

Try this review if you want to (gasp!) actually know the game you're criticizing:

And yes, I still have more fond memories of the Scandinavia levels of Daikatana then the grey tunnels of Half-Life.

The Sin Episodes got sunk because the developer, Ritual, got bought out and the programmers got sent to work on titles for PopCap... a fate worse than death.

Isn't a lot of DLC nowadays episodic? For the Fallout series, there has been pretty regular content for the last 4 years, and it wasn't (mostly) stupid weapons packs.

Man, Exhumed was great! Weird as hell, but great.

I'm really curious now whether Yahtzee knows No One Lives Forever (2000). That tongue-in-cheek homage to/parody of 60s spy flicks is the funniest and most enjoyable FPS I've ever played. It got great reviews and everyone I know who's played it loved it, but it's strangely obscure nowadays and I feel it doesn't get the credit it deserves. :(

This is a first person shooter.

And this is a shooter.

LEARN THE GODDAMN DIFFERENCE!

If you say shooter, you must mean a shooter. If you mean a first person shooter, you must say first person shooter.

I think you're getting a bit carried away with the semantics, mate. Besides, 'Shooter' is a broad term, and can refer to several different video game genres. I usually label the example you've listed as 'Shoot 'em ups', anyways. Or in this specific example, 'Curtain Shooters'.

Great article as usual. Yahtzee and myself seem to have very similar tastes in first person shooters. I'll always love games made on the Build Engine.

Rodrigo Girao:
If you say shooter, you must mean a shooter. If you mean a first person shooter, you must say first person shooter.

While Mars Matrix's genre existed well before Doom's, "shooter" is far too general a term to retain that meaning for so long.

"Scrolling shooter" is the closest to generally-accepted, but still not specific enough, as Contra and Metal Slug could also fit that.

"Flying shooter" is almost there, except today's mostly 3D-minded gamers will first think Descent, Magic Carpet, or HAWX.

Thus, I propose "2D flying shooter".

LOL, trying to prove a point? Try and find a review that gives out more then a 74/100.

You're more then welcome to like something everyone else in the world hates, but you're the odd one out, you precious little snow flake you. That game is universally shat on, even hated, and that's a fact.

OT:

underrated shooters are underrated

No he's right. There are many much worse games than Daikatana and even Half-Life had its share of inane jumping puzzles in repetitive gray environs. That 74/100 rating is a couple standard deviations away from the norm, but it isn't "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" or "Cluster's Revenge."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that 74/100 is an especially horrible score... I'm personally of the opinion that we are far too obsessed with numerical scores and I think it's mental that something can be given an 8/10 on Destructoid and people assume that means it's shitty...

However the dude was trying to say, 'now heres a REAL review!!'(real having the meaning of, one I agree with...). But it was an appallingly worded review with a not really inspiring score, considering he was leading people to believe that that review somehow made it glow.

I also think that Half-Life is overrated, but I'm not gonna get into that lol. What is true, is that Daikatana is a notoriously hated game, and trying to argue that fact is a bit silly.

Just in case you're interested, my 'worst game ever' have to be Jumper...

I'm so sick and tire of shooters. Why does people like shooter so much and eat up all the shit that comes out of the market that are shooters?

I blame it on darwin and WWII, all the ones that can shoot or like shooting thrives and all the ones that can't perished. So now we got a bunch of idiots that are the descendants of gun freaks, hence the saturated shooter market. Fuck! we even got a movie called "shooter".
They even fucked up syndicate by making it a FPS.

I wanna see more RPGS, more swords, more knifes! Hell, I'll be happy even if they made more games like mario! And where are all the space sims gone? I know we're still shooting in those but at least it's in space and we can do it 360 degrees.

I wanna see a sequel or a remake of star control right fucking now!

Blood and Sin. You good sir have touched my hearth with very good games indeed to bad that Sin doesnt work in my computer anymore or at least dont know how to make it work (comments are appreciated).
Caleb voice is so good in fact that i am trying to imitate it for a mini series of mine and try my best to transmit the fun old memories along with it

You know, have you played Requiem: The Avenging Angel made by the defunct company 3DO who also made Heroes 3 Of Might And Magic???? First person shooter about the angel Malakai that is ordered to hunt down Lucifer and other fallen angels before they unleash the apocalipse in a dystopian future. You can have both weapons and spells that include make blood become so hot that it spurts out of the enemies bodies, turn people into salt statues, posses people, resurrect people to make them fight in your side, Bullet time (it even predates Max Payne) deflect bullets and etc. In other words you have an entire arsenal that is slowly available to you the more you progress. However my main complain is that its buggy as hell and there are moments that when you try to backtrack, some event triggers like the elevator coming back just dont work and you have to use cheats to proceed. Also the enemies that are human get only a skin color change for their suits and even if most if their weapons look like pistols most of the can shoot lasers or even rockets (good luck with any trigger happy rocket launcher) However i guess that the fact that you can posses THEM and shot unlimited ammount of FUN out of their weapons makes up for it.

Not sure if its because the version i got (Spanish language version) has something to do with it. You may think that a version that just changes the language can not have bugs simply because people dont touch the rest of the game and only edit the sound samples or something, however anyone who played Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction in the Spanish language may undertand what i am saying. There was a bug in LOD related to any Runeword that has auras and Unique jewels where for the people who has the English version of the game, can see the options just fine but for us the game crashes in case it was a runeword with an aura and for the jewels you could not see the options (some options were missing) and making trades very difficult because the other person can see just fine and in my side the jewel appears without words and end up complaining why he tried to give me some jewel with nothing that i can use. It was later fixed but for us, we got to use an online patch called "Vanessa Patch" to play

I dont undertand you sometimes Yatzee, if you are this bitter about playing these new FPS then why dont you play something good so the ignorant masses know that there is something beyond that grey wall?? I know, i know, work isnt it? But most of the time it seems that you take pleasure in playing shitty popular games to piss fanboys and then make more videos bashing the mails of them just to piss them off when in reality they still will think that their games are the best in the world regardless if you use that rare technique called logic to debunk any comment you see. However if you play good games they will be filled with doubt an uncertainty with the thought that they may be missing a good game instead of this one and their infinite supply of money as become shorter for nothing. Isnt that is more effective??

Lets see what other FPS i can remember: Hexen 1 and Hexen 2 (it had lvl up system that automatically upgraded your max stats and unlocked up to 2 power for each classes you play) , Heretic (there is Heretic 2 but it felt incomplete), Duke Nukem, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage, Unreal, Quake 1 and 2 and Arena. That is all for now

I also played MDK 1 and 2, Messiah and Sacrifice, all games by SHINNY Entertainment. but because they arent FPS i guess the people wont even care but when you play them you wont regret it

Good Luck

sravankb:
So you still prefer that for no reason you health regenerate if you just wait? i could let that skip if it was something done by Duke Nukem (Duke Nukem Manhattan Project did it in 2002 before Forever did it again)

I actually enjoyed Marathon when I did get a chance to play it. These days you hear about it being the only other game Bungie ever made and how Halo fanatic sometimes claim to own an original copy or something.

It also had those scary journal entries that everyone seems to think System Shock 2 invented.

Cheer up man, Saint's Row 3 is coming.
And by the look of things that game is going to be ridiculously fun.

Loved NOLF, also its sequel, A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, very funny, I think the publisher, FOX Studios, is now defunct, I'd love to se a modern take on it

Shadow Warrior. Enough said.

(still don't understand how it missing on gog)

By the way, what did he said about Saint Row 1?

DioWallachia:

By the way, what did he said about Saint Row 1?

He never reviewed it.
He got his actual job as a critic after 2008 if I remember and I don't think SR1 was made after '08, so there you have it.
