Immortals

The good kind of eye candy.

now I really do need a 3DS

Did you see the 3D version or the 2D version? I'm trying to determine if 3D would actually be worth it with your description of gory goodness...

Most 3D to me is terribly distracting and just pulls you out of the movie but from your description, this movie doesn't try very hard to pull you in so that might put points in the "see it in 3D category".

Who's the douche at the 04:41 & what has he done?

Also, where's our Tintin review?

Moral of the story: if you're going to make something crazy, don't half-ass it.

I kind of forgot what I wanted to say here... Anyway, I'm interested in watching this movie now.

It's made a pretentious pseudo-intellectual. I'll pass. I have videogames for this kind of stuff

It amuses me that you say, "people being split in half," just as a woman disrobes.

I too, am suddenly interested. I also thought it was going to be another action wank judging from just the posters and "from 300" thing and so completely ignored it. When Bob mentioned "style" though, suddenly I'm all ears. Screw realism, style is everything I look for in action.

The same guy that did The Fall making a 300-esque action film? YES. Two of my favourite films, smashed together. I may have to go see this.

I felt the same way before seeing this film myself last night. I was impressed with the style and visuals. I don't normally recommend something on that basis alone, but this is so bold I have to make an exception.

Is that me or it look like they set Phaedra as Thesus love interest? (since I didn't see the movie I can't be sure)

Mind you they do get married in mythology, but its mostly a political affair, Phaedra actually fall hopelessly in love Thesus son from his relationship with the amazon queen.

That's not coming out in the U.S until December 21st.

I dont like Tarsam, he likes to pretend to be deep and it just ends up pretentious. I watched The Cell and nearly every scene was dripped in a certain style that wants people to try to analyse it, even when it had Jenifer Lopez dressed as the Virgin Mary but then again in a scene earlier she did rip off a dudes nipples so I guess the violence comes hand in hand with style with Tarsams stuff.

I probably will see it though, im a sucker from Greeky Mythos.

I seen to have underestimate a few films lately (Real Steel and In Time). While I know you said it isn't excellent but from what you said about it, I want to check it out now.

If Bob is looking for Art House action films, I wonder if he ever got around to seeing 'Hanna.' That film was fantastic with a great sense of style.

From what i know, those poor smuck in US have to wait to 21/12. I'm so happy to be from Sweden.

I tend to avoid these Militaristic wank-fest movies. The movie 300 has been lampooned over and over for how crap and over the top it was.

I can get the same thing from this film that I can from most FMV's in FPS-style games today, anyway.

If you're going to refer to us 'poor schmucks' over in the US, you could at least put the date format in a way that us "dirty" Americans can understand.

;-p

What he meant to say was we have to wait until 12/21/11.

two more days!

Here I was begging for a stylistically original and incredibly fun action movie, and here it appears to be!

But it's directed by Tarson...
I thought The Fall was beautiful, but it's just obvious that storytelling and world building aren't his thing, and The Cell was... The Cell.

What a dilemma...

Looks fun and it IS fun? Horay!
Glad it's not PG-13 either.

You could try Film Brain on TGWTG.

Yes, Bob. 0.03% is three percent...of one percent. You forgot to finish that sentence.

Right?

I can't remember which one it was exactly but at the beginning of one of his reviews he says to go see it then goes on with the review he was doing.

I kind of want to know as well.

So it's nothing like 300 (except the stylisation) Well that's a mark in it's favour.

I'd ignored this as I expected it to be just 301. Might wait for a DVD release now.

Brett Ratner; what Bob is referencing is that a few days ago Ratner made a slur against homosexuals and resigned as the producer of the next Oscar ceremony

He pulled that same manuever with 'Battle: LA.' That was another movie I was eager to hear his full take on.

This seems like I should wait to see it on DVD, but actually, the DVD would probably cost as much as the theater ticket, and for a movie that I'm probably only going to want to watch all the way through once, exclusively for the "visual panash," wouldn't it be better to see it in super surround sound on a great huge screen?

Oh thank goodness. I love Tarsem's style and particular brand of awesome. I was kind of worried this wouldn't stand up, but hells yeah! Now, time to go see it.

the douche is Brett Ratner. The folderol is a anti-gay slur. He's a douche; all you have to remember among the other shit he's done is that he's responsible for X-Men: Last Stand.

OT: Interesting.

So what I'm gleaning from this is that Immortals should in essence be viewed as moving picture: ie- bag the plot and the dialog and enjoy the visuals?

That sounds like it might be entertaining. I wonder when someone will actually do a dialog-less film bent on that purpose.

THE CELL WAS PHENOMENAL!

Eh, at least you recognized how good The Fall was. God damn I love that movie...

I was on the fence about Immortals up until a week ago when I realized Tarsem Singh was directing. I immediately made plans to see it. This review only makes me more excited.

I'm really hyped for this film, yeah at first I thought 300-knock off but then I saw the first trailer. At that point I thought it was a 300-knock off that went ludicrously over the top and drenched itself in Kriby style space gods, and I wanted to see it. Then I saw The Fall and realised that the guy making it was a visual master and enourmously creative, I so want to see this.

I'm curious about this as well. My local cheapo theater (where I go to see most movies as it's like 2 blocks from where I live and shows first runs at like half the price of major theaters) isn't showing it in 3D so I'm wondering if it's worth the trip to a different theater or if the 2D version is fine.

I very rarely agree with any of your reviews, and I'm not sure I agree that eye candy can ever be enough, but this was a good review nonetheless.

Greek mythology has a special place in my heart. It was the first thing I ever geeked out on, when I was no older than 7 or 8 years old, before I even knew what a video game or Star Wars was. And since then, I've never really stopped being into it. Having that type of a relationship to it, I don't really mind that people use it as a backdrop for their over-the-top action fantasies, without caring much for the actual mythology. But it would be nice if someone only for once could make a movie or a video game about greek mythology that goes a little deeper than all the stuff we've been seeing the last couple of years.

Hmm... video isn't loading past 4 minutes... what the?
