DearFilm:
If Bob is looking for Art House action films, I wonder if he ever got around to seeing 'Hanna.' That film was fantastic with a great sense of style.

I can't remember which one it was exactly but at the beginning of one of his reviews he says to go see it then goes on with the review he was doing.

It was Your Highness, recommended about 3 other movies as well before starting the review.

Now I'm on the fence with this one. I can't look at it as a graphic novel in motion like 300 is. (which is the only way THAT film makes sense, btw.) If the story is too weak to connect with, then it just becomes a 2 hr trailer which, besides being exhausting to watch, is somewhat pointless. The only tarsen film I've seen is The Fall, which I didn't even realize until I looked it up on IMDB and recognized some of the photos.

Never even heard of this, but colour me interested now.

Heared of this a few months ago and already then decided to watch it in theaters. Going to watch in an hour or so, judging by the review I will probably like it. It makes 300 look like 0.03? Count me in.

This might just break my cinema apathy. The last time I was at a movie theater was the midnight release of HP:DH:2, I'll probably go next weekend though, to beat the stampede and everything.

When MovieBob said he sucked at math in his Dungeons & Dragons video, I guess he must have meant it (in regards of the whole "0.03%" thing).

Also, personally, I can't wait to use the Tanooki Suit with the bandanna, because THAT one acts more like the original Tanooki Suit than the main one in the game.

I didn't like this movie. They widdled it down too close to basics for my liking. The fighting scenes left a lot for me to desire. They were clearly scripted and not very fluid specifically on Theseus' part. I'll take Clash or 300 over this 9 times out of 10.

wait you liked a action movie?...

huh...

i am setting my standards really low for tonight then.

still looks pretty interesting.

So its avantegard and artsy well that means the gernarl public wont get it, cool mean i hopefully wont have a hard time at work this weekend:).

I might have gone to see this, but i spent that money on Skyrim.... I think i made the better choice.

Great show as always Bob but dammit I thought you were finally, after what a year and a half, going to say "Shit" uncut! Jim and Yahtzee do it uncut and you used to, when will it go back? Other than that, you've pulled me from the fence. I need to check out The Immortals!

You know Bob, after a (as far as Iīm concerned) rather weak and weird Big Picture, itīs really solid of you to take 4 1/2 minutes off to remind me why I think you are an incredible smart guy, worth listening to.
Really, itīs appreciated.

I was officially on the fence for this movie, but you hooked me bob. So many films out right now I have to see... Immortals, Real Steel, In Time...

ShenCS:
I too, am suddenly interested. I also thought it was going to be another action wank judging from just the posters and "from 300" thing and so completely ignored it. When Bob mentioned "style" though, suddenly I'm all ears. Screw realism, style is everything I look for in action.

Agreed. I find Stylistic action flicks, such as say, Sucker Punch, to be infinitely more entertaining, despite their flaws.

Meh. I've never cared for Tarsem's style, because it's canvas thin and never left open to personal interpretation. Toss that in with juvinile amounts of violence and you've got Pretentious Mortal Kombat, which MovieBob seemed to be implying but ironically was endorsing it.

This sort of feels like how he endorsed 2012, praising the film's visual look while ignoring the paper-thin plot and recycled characters because he was just so happy to not be looking at Michael Bay's epileptic patriotic camera direction. And while I will say it's fine for people to enjoy films that exist just for the visuals, that's something that should be reserved for IMax.

I don't go to movies for the visuals. I go to the movies for a story. I read books for stories, I play games for stories. And forgive me for saying so, but while his premises are nice, Tarsem's stories are dull, dull, dull. He doesn't get a free ride for animating college art projects.

The good kind of eye candy? Thats good enough for me to go see it, but you already sold me on this movie before it came out, saying it look like it would be 300 but on way better drugs. 300 was already hooked up on good stuff so I'm in.

did i hear him say wanking?

The guy that made The Cell? Ugh. I don't know if I would even bother giving him a chance after that travesty of a film.

I'm SOOOOO glad that you didn't waste our time with "Jack n Jill".

I actually didn't like this movie that much. Didn't hate it either.
But the action scene were gore-fests with no actual awesome fighting done.
And throughout the whole movie I got the thought of "wow didn't they do this in 300 and way better?"

StriderShinryu:

tippy2k2:
Did you see the 3D version or the 2D version?

I'm curious about this as well. My local cheapo theater (where I go to see most movies as it's like 2 blocks from where I live and shows first runs at like half the price of major theaters) isn't showing it in 3D so I'm wondering if it's worth the trip to a different theater or if the 2D version is fine.

i think the movie will be great either way and on another note...

OMG.... MOVIE BOB KNOWS MY NAME T-T :D

Ok, just saw this film, and I have to say Bob nailed it. To those saying that its just like 300, it shares a similar STYLE with 300, but not similar THEMES. You get all the sexiness of the stylised action, none of the dodgy fascist undertones. As Bob said, the story and characters aren't worth seeing this movie for. But the action is outstanding and the visuals are terrific. I would recommend going just to sit back and let the beauty wash over you!

0.03 ... %

Uh huh.

300 with a smidge of class? Ok, you've sold me Bob.

They should just have gone whole-hog and made it less story developement and more surreal dream sequence. All we need to know if is the pretense and some framing and then we should just let the moive hang its visual balls out like one long music video. Sometimes movies don't NEED that musch structure, if the visual identity is strong enough and you are not going to go for great character focus just go for bare minimum and let the sheer brain-melting spectacle make up for it.

Its a shame they went for a second act that bogs the mvie down my trying to make the movie for 'grounded' when clearly that is a lost cause from the outset. Obviously some movie exec got very worried and told them to "Actulaly build a movie" in all of this missunderstanding its intentions and they ended up placing a formula plot in there.

If this movie was just frever-dearm like visuals of greeks beating the shit out of eachother with disturbing fetishistic undertones made into overtones to a soaring score and the shound of Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile" they could take all of my money. All of it!

The only reason I want to see this is because of the first line of the trailer. Behold it, in all of it's hilarious (for no explicit reason) glory:

I have... plenty of women.

It just sounds so ridiculous. My friend and I were sitting there for like 30 minutes talking about how they could cut the movie down to those 5 words, and how it would be nominated as "Film of the Year" just for those ridiculous 5 words.

Not a fan of The Miller, I see.

Also, Stephen Dorff?!? Where the crap has he been hiding? I don't remember seeing him in anything significant since Blade.

It might just be me, but the style and costuming of the Gods reminded me greatly of Zardoz. Very 70s-ish.

I use to think it look like a good movie, but the aggressive ad campaign on television just made me sick of it. Besides, I have more important things to spend money on like Halo Anniversary Edition.

MonkeyPunch:
Never even heard of this, but colour me interested now.

I wonder if you actually watch any television, or if it just wasn't advertised in your area.

The reason I say this is that, these days, I only watch about 2 hours of actual TV with commercials a week and the commercials for this movie practically air during every commercial break. To me it was bad advertising, because I saw the commercial for it so much that I actually got sick of hearing about it that I would rather stay home and save money.

Okay this is the final straw i have tried to listen to your series on a large number of things but enough is enough.I dont know if its just you being you but you let shit films and ideas get a easy pass because it has good and different effects.

Effects are killing the industry alot quicker than anything else as your promoting alot of shit films on the story line side just because the film has a new take on effects.A number of times i have thought yes bob knows what he is doing but on a number of key topics you seem to want to advise the world into going stupid directions

I know that me saying this wont change your following i just hope that people catch on before you lead them down a dark hole.

Darkstrike_11:
but not similar THEMES. You get all the sexiness of the stylised action, none of the dodgy fascist undertones.

Of course, if you know anything about greek mythology you know that Theseus was a filthy kidnapper and rapist. Also, you seem to be confusing Fascist undertones with Spartan undertones, although from a certain point of non-economic view the Spartans could have been considered the worlds first fascists.

Well, I can't see this movie because I'm in Japan (even though I'd like to), but on the other hand I can make you all jealous by having bought Super Mario 3D Land last week.

On a related note, why is it that every movie or game about Greek mythology falls back on this "releasing the Titans" idea? It has absolutely no grounding in any of the actual myths and comes off as unabashedly silly to anyone who's ever studied them even briefly. I'm not saying unabashedly silly is wrong, I just don't get why it always has to be the same unabashed silliness. It's just like the way everyone always gets lazy and decides that Hades should be portrayed as the Christian devil, even though he's actually probably the nicest of the gods (still kind of an asshole, but much less of one than even Athena tends to be).

misterprickly:
I'm SOOOOO glad that you didn't waste our time with "Jack n Jill".

Really? Cause I was expecting that to be what was reviewed.

Though its not really like we wouldn't know what to expect: as of earlier today, Jack and Jill was at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, and now is at 3% because two critics were a bit too forgiving on the movie. If you couldn't tell Jack and Jill was tosh from the previews, then you aren't paying enough attention to the world and/or your sense of humor is that of an 8 year old boy.

Thanks Bob. I was really wondering what your take on this would be. I hope to see this soon.

Kick-ass!

Glad it's not another action-bomb (no pun intended), because there have been far too many attempts that fall on their faces embarrassingly. I don't want to see Clash of the Titans treatment with any mythology (no culture deserves that), and I'm glad to hear that we get some no-holding-back violence and gore.

No Frank Miller makes it sound that much more better. My reasoning is simple and down to two words: The Spirit.

I didn't know that was a comic or anything when I rented it, but damn was that movie horrible! I don't think I actually even finished that one, come to think of it...

The story in Immortals is nothing fresh, but at least it's essentially grounded in human concerns, rather than 300's unpleasant predilection for the institutions of military and empire. It has little of The Fall's sweetness and imagination, but plenty of its beautifully bonkers production design. The jury's still out on whether Tarsem is any good at directing actors talking though.

Just saw it and the action is a over the top gorefest especially once the gods get in volved. Great movie had loads of fun at the theater.
