Zero Punctuation: Assassin's Creed: Revelations

me while playing Revelations: "who does Desmond look more and more like in this game??? huh....I really can't put my finger on it"

good grief Yahtzee LOL. I suppose Adam Sandler is kind of where I was getting at but...oh whatever.

I actually HATED that little tower defense mini game because even while I was bribing heralds to keep my notoriety down (and subsequently pickpocketing the money right back), it would still happen inevitably whenever I took over a Templar den and well...after failing twice in the SAME den I got a tip online how to do it most efficiently...ah well whatever it was aight after that lol

but yes, I LOVE this series...but probably only because I've only bought 2 and 2.5, having skipped over 1 and just Redbox'd 2.75 for a few days (plus I got 2.5 like 20% off). I mean I did really enjoy how Revelations polished everything up, and I'm now kinda...glad they expanded on Ezio's story really, but okay let's get #3 for real

i hope they do an Assasins creed game in the future starring Desmond. if it had some elements of Hitman it could be good

I think thats the general idea for the next game, as it's the conclusion of Desmond's story.

OT great review as always

anyway, I would rather play an Assassin's Creed game in Japan than France for sake of variety (and boy would it be different...)...something that would really help the series even tho I've really enjoyed it thus far

Well at least it seems like Ubisoft is finally taking the series in a new direction what with that "where should the next Assassins Creed take place?" poll they made a while back.

I'm a HUGE AssCreed fan(my fav game series along with Prince of Persia - yes, like Yahtzee I too was a flying squirrel in another lifetime) and while AC:R isn't anything earthshattering, it's not a bad game at all considering it was done in what, one year?

And I can't believe that after Brotherhood people expected Revelations to be even better. AC 1 and AC2 are the only proper games of the series, 3 and 4 are extended DLC's, even though I liked Brotherhood and Revelations as well. The problem with the latter two is that they don't really expand the story, they use the charisma of Ezio's character and put him basically anywhere as long it's suitably exotic, so they tend to drag out a story from a tiny lump of info(teasing as you go along), only to say at the end - sequel sucka.

I LOVE this series but Ubisoft needs to adress certain issues:

-making the game challenging - look, challenge flies out the window when Ezio can do kill streaks, numerous counters, leap over assailants while hooking them, throwing bombs to both kill, poision and distract opponents, offering players numerous ways to take out targets at range(crossbow, gun, poison, throwing knives). I'm not in the OMG YOU HAVE TO BE STEALTHY AT ALL TIMES camp of the AssCreed fans but I want that sense of urgency you had in AC1 where a guard spotting you meant you had to run like crazy and hiding spots weren't as galore as in latter AC games. Immersion flies out the window when you know you can take on THE WHOLE CITY GUARD at once. I know Ezio is the Italian Superman but come on.

-gives us actual AC games, not extended DLC in another locale. I bought both Brohood and AC:R on day one but the story always teased me instead of actually expanding whereas in AC2 we had a significant character arc, multiple locales(both firenze and venezia looked STUNNING and even the secondary locations like forli and your uncle's villa looked cool) and while the ending also screamed sequel, you felt like you had achieved something.

-stop it with the f**king multiplayer. AssCreed is NOT a multiplayer type of game. Its main focus is on SINGLEPLAYER and while the sneaky multiplayer is somewhat unique in the online world, it does not the game make. It's a waste of time and resources that could be better put to use in the thing that defines the game, the STORY IN THE SINGLEPLAYER mode.

If AssCreed 3(a proper AC game supposedly) gets released in 2012, then it will probably be another DLC'ish title. I love this series and it has great potential but Ubisoft needs to stop milking it and start expanding it. I want another character that had the same growth of Ezio but not in three games released in 3 freaking years. If they had lumped BroHood and AC:R into one game and released it in late 2011 it would have made a far better game.

John the Gamer:
From the wikipage: "Asked about future of the series, Sébastien Puel from Ubisoft said that "[...] we could do 35 of these [Assassin's Creed games]."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin's_Creed#Future

So you might want to prepare yourself for plenty of faffing about, Yahtzee.
They're only supposed to do only 3 games with desmond(only one more), so that's a plus, I guess? Unless they mean 35 expansion packs, that is.

35 games...

1 gamea year...

35 YEARS??? will it ever end?

Isn't AC the first series to receive 4 critics by Yahtzee?

Oh and thaaaanks for the ACB spoiler.

Qitz:
Heh. Gotta love the crossed out Istanbul sign.

Think you needed to add a few more Faff's in there though.

I seriously could not stop laughing at that and immediately thought of the song by They Might Be Giants.

XD

Istanbul not Constantinople

That analogy at the beginning sums up how I feel about Assassin's Creed perfectly. It seems remarkable at first, but then you realize that everything that gave it such a strong first impression is actually all it has to offer.

tehweave:
You didn't mention that you play as Altair.

But... That doesn't matter because the game wasn't very good.

Let's see MORE assassins, Ubisoft! Ezio was cool, Altair was kinda cool, but we need more characters. Let's delve into some random assassin circa year 0, or how about 1920's Chicago? Or how about modern-day? Or... SOMEONE ELSE BESIDES THESE TWO.

Game 1: Altair
Game 2: Ezio
Game 3: Ezio again
Game 4: Ezio with special guest appearance by Altair.
SOMETHING ELSE. ANYTHING.

I'm with this. They had that great side story with the Comic Book that detailed the Assassin in Stalin-Era Russia. So cool. Even jumping around the other ancestors during Desmond's levels would have been great.

I agree with everything thing he said but despite that I still enjoyed it. I just skipped all the faffing about and did the story which was better than the one in Brotherhood IMO. This and Brotherhood both had really promising begins but seemed to have no real direction after that. I hope the next one goes back to being more like II which was amazing. And, please Ubisoft, can we wrap up with thing with Desmond next game because you're really drawing it out now.

And there he went and used a rage face. Why, internet, what are you doing to the things I love?

Vault101:

Samus Aran but a man:
If the next game was set during the French Revolution, would it work?

interesting Idea but persoanlly I would find that too similar to AC2 and brotherhood

hmm... what about feudal Japan?

hmmmmm

YES....that sounds cool

I just can't see the visible jaw part of Y's assassin as anything but a big smiling mouth, and come old Ezio, it's now rather disturbing!

Am I the only one who noticed that Yahtzee farted during his recording at 4:50?

did the escapist decide to follow the footsteps of youtube? it looks like shit now!

Why in the world does he always refer to Desmond as "Future Desmond"? There's only one Desmond in the game, who would we be confusing him with? And why not refer to Ezio as "Past Ezio"? I don't get it...

Geisterkarle:
I have to say I somehow missed the plot of this game... normally Yahzee tells us what the game is about... now? Tower Defense, Recruitment, and killing some people... is there more meaning?

Not really. As Yahtzee described, it's essentially the 'third act' of the Assassin's Creed 2 trilogy, if that makes any sense. It's more of a wrap up to the other two stories, so if you haven't really been paying attention to 2 or Brotherhood in... well... forever, you're not gonna get the story.

:/ tbh, I'm not exactly fond of this. It's like Ubisoft is pulling a Half-Life on us and releasing the Assassin's Creed games episodically, only they advertise them as full games and thus charge them as much.

fieryshadowcard:
Personally, I find it more annoying that people get bent out of shape because someone who, while discussing a sequel, refers to incidents that occurred in its sequential and chronological predecessor(s). It'd be like getting upset at someone talking about Aliens while mentioning that Ridley was the sole survivor of Alien (whoops!). Unless Yahtzee is supposed to talk only about the mechanics in a (partly) story-driven game, which is anything but how a Zero Punctuation episode operates, it seems pointless to assume that the PREVIOUS game's plot points are a secret in the discussion of a current one. If you'll notice, he really doesn't give much away about the story in Revelations itself. What more do people want from him?

Want a technical, spoiler-free review? Read an IGN one. But wait. People hate those... probably has something to do with how vague they are and how little is actually said, as opposed to how much.

Actually it's perfectly simple enough to talk about a sequel without ruining the first. And considering Alien came out over 30 years ago, that's fine because it's a movie that almost everyone has seen. Do you think he had to bring up the dude killing his girlfriend to accurately describe the gaming experience he had? Do I have to bring up Dom killing his wife in Gears of War 2 to talk about Gears of War 3 (oops)? Or Aerith dying in FFVII to talk about FFVIII? All I'm saying is at least warn us before hand. I don't care about spoilers, I care about him just spouting them off and then saying spoiler warning.

From someone who has literally just started playing the Brotherhood, thanks for the spoiler. And to those saying that the game has been out for a year so you are going to get spoilers, I say get bent. Just because you can afford to get games as soon as they come out, does not mean the rest of us can.

Otherwise as usual good review. I feel the Assassins creed series is like the lethal weapon series were it just got more bulky with characters etc as time went on. It really needs to get back to it's core gameplay.

I know how he feels. I like the asscree games but I feel like I just finished the last one.
I'll pick this up later.
I'm kind of looking forward to the tower defense bits. I just hope it's a bit more robust than the city management thing they kind of threw in there at one point.
They should keep adding stuff like that.
The next one will have a 2D figher mode.
And a point & click adventure mode after that.
Why not?
As long as they can keep making a big city where it's fun to go running around stabbing people.

It's a bit of an older thread now but I made a thread http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.327486-Ubisoft-asks-where-the-next-Assassins-Creed-should-be-set Ubisoft had a survey about where the next game should be set, Japan was one of the options.

Why the hell am I getting a German toothbrush add??

my problem with assasins creed is its like a chocolate bar..firggen delicious

BUT if your eating chocolate bars at this rate then your gonna feel sick, and so the next chocolate bar might be the most delicious thing ever created...but it doesnt matter because your full and its not special anymore

um, this is off topic, but what was the Eva reference he made in review of Catherine??? (sorry, I really wan to know)

I can't see the video right now, so I want to know what was the reference.

So are we ever going to get the Serious Sam 3 review (that I vaguely remember being promised but am possibly wrong about)?
Or is it going to be the ending to the three-qual saga (Holy shit there are a lot of three-quals).
Because really, for some reason Serious Sam 3 hasn't been reviewed by many sites. And I don't know why.

This has probably been ninja'd about 5 time already in this section alone but my guess is Ubisoft is scared shitless of making a game focusing on Desmond. I don't mind though, I love the series and am looking forward to the next one.

An idea: We who saw the Embers short-film also saw that Chinese Assassin. Desmond needs to find a woman of some sort (as mentioned by Juno in Brotherhood).

Consider. The chick is part asian and we get to play as that Chinese Assassin as the woman relives memories in an Animus somewhere for the sake of more games, story and of course [b]profit[/].

I realize I'm out of touch with this series(only played the first one) but wasn't this whole horse hockey supposed to be about finding pieces of edan? Are they still doing that?

The overarching topic is Assassin's versus Templars (Abstergo), the Piece of Eden is just one part of this.
And basically in the last game (AssBro) they found the probable location of one of them, which is presumably what AssCre3 will be about.
This game is just one big memory trip where nothing at all in the overarching plot happens, but it does wrap up both the Ezio and Altair storylines.

And thank fnord for that. Desmond is a character without a personality, still, so I for one am happy with this little sidestory. I don't care about the main plot, I just want to stab people in the back with a blade and disappear before they can catch me. Desmond's only purpose is to go back into his ancestor's memories and allow me to do that.

(edited: for some reason I always type "Big Evil templar" Inc. as Aspergo if I am not paying attention.)

It might even be more, if we really have to collect ALL pieces of eden in seperate games...There's 9 games right now, btw. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassin's_Creed#Games

It is said that this has become a flagship franchise for Ubisoft. Like Star Wars for LucasArts or CoD/Battlefield/FIFA/etc. are for others.

When are Ubisoft going to make an assassin's creed in victorian london, where you play jack the ripper, and frame people for crimes so they get deported to australia.
Also, steampunk technology would be pretty fun.

Ouch! I know I like to suggest the Assassins are evil but that takes the biscuit

Yay! I'm more evil than your opinion of evil.
Mwahahahaha.

FYI "Ezio Auditore" sounds as improbable in italian as "Ford Prefect" in english. Let alone a proper name from a man of those ages.

Otaku World Order:

ShenCS:
I'd only get this game for the story and frankly I'm happy to just wait for the price to come down. The "one a year" thing is annoying Ubisoft, don't try it. I still like the idea most of us had when the 2nd game came out. Y'know, that he would be jumping about time to uncover various interlinking conspiracies. I mean hell, the extra faffing wouldn't really be complained about if I could dance atop the half-constructed pyramids of ancient Egypt. They're wasting ideas and plot they could use to pad out other, more interesting settings. Sure people would still complain about them but certainly a lot less.

I just wish the story would move on already. Then again, Ubisoft has suggested AC III will be set in 2012, which kills my hopes for AC in ancient China or Japan.

Don't they all technically take place in 2012?

Oh Yahtzee you and your old people jokes. I remember your MGS jokes.

I would love to insult the lack of work that went into reviewing this, or fully agree with reviewing a dodgy game, but I can't since I'm stuck on an advertisement for Muppets that won't let me do anything except play random Muppets videos.

Niiiice.

EDIT:

I GOT IN I GOT IN I GOT IN I GOT IN I GOT yea whatever. Too much cynicism, not enough game hating. We all know they suck and they want money, something new. :P Now onto my next Muppets video.
