It has the name "Weinstein" on its credits, 'nuff said
Didn't you like Avatar? A lot? And by the way what was the movie poster that way farthest to the right in the post roll?
Mel Brooks: always ahead of the curve Nice to see you're looking forward to Prometheus
The Hobbit I believe | |
I'll probably see the Mel Brooks movie instead.
Give an Oscar to Grindhouse? FUCK YEAH someone please do this
In the spirit of this film I will be responding to this post entirely in semaphore. I don't have a webcam, so you'll just have to trust me on this.
HOW DARE YOU SIR! How dare you compare such a terrible terrible movie such as Jack and Jill to the magnificence of Dunkin Donuts coffee. I would take DD over Starbucks and day.
You're right, thanks | |
Silent movie is better by virtue of having Marty Feldman and his insane eyes.
I had hoped you were going to review Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, oh well, I might have to go in not knowing! gasp!
When I saw this getting rave reviews it set off minor alarm bells in my head. I haven't seen it and I'm not privy to the motivations of the reviewers, but it kind of seems like the sort of thing "serious" film critics would feel obliged to praise.
'The Artist' was probably my favourite film of the year. I disagree with Bob on the idea that being a silent film is a gimmick. The way I see it, silent films are like a certain flavour, and I fucking love that flavour. I've enjoyed watching silent films for some time now and while almost all of the plots are quite shallow there is often I feel a great amount of expressiveness in them that more modern films tend to lack. Not that I don't enjoy modern films, but once in a while I want to watch something else. Maybe something from a specific time, or a different era. All different flavours.
Following on the success of The Producers, I hear Mel Brooks is developing a Broadway re-make of Silent Movie. Only kidding...
Woah, I actually feel nauseous after watching that. Oh, not the movie, but Bob's insufferably self-indulgent review where he goes on to call the film shallow and then congratulating himself over his own "film historian" status for "understanding" what's going to happen and what's going on. Really, there's a reason the movie has been beloved by audiences worldwide so far - it's an unassuming, charming romantic story told in a way that hasn't been seen in a while, set with the backdrop of a historically significant moment in cultural history. Bob's own attempt at boosting his own ego as some kind of a resident expert to be admired at and descends into being downright insulting by following that up with calling the film a "well, that's nice" gimmick fest.
Precisely, and on top of that the silent movie aspect of the film is just as important to the character that the chopped up storytelling of Memento was for Guy Pearce's character. Any means of telling a story and The Artist does this perfectly.
Kinda surprised to see "Prometheus" as the third anticipated of 2012 instead of "Dark Knight Rises." Who does that say more about- "DKR" or MovieBob?
I love how Mr. Chipman exclaims loosely how this movie is parallel to Grindhouse in deserving an Academy Award, yet would have splooged all over himself if Grindhouse ever won such an award. What happened to MovieBob? He used to be some schlub from Lowell that reviewed movies like your "Average Joe" would. Now, he's way too full of himself, despite still being some schlub from Lowell. Every single week we have to endure a still shot from The Critic and/or hear about a movie not being screened for reviewers. Ok, we get it. You want desperately to be considered legit and shove it in everyone's face that you're a "film critic". Out of curiosity, does anyone know what his qualifications are or what school (studies) he attended to grant him such a title that he flaunts around like a whore with herpes? I miss old MovieBob. I miss the swearing, the anger, and the unabashed ogling of hot women. Old MovieBob tore the shit out of Michael Bay, and that was fantastic. New MovieBob apologizes for bashing Michael Bay because he has his "career" to think about. Such a shame. MovieBob sold out even before he began. Now he's just a sheep trying to jockey for position at the Herald. Even worse, probably the Patriot Ledger.
Am I the only one who doesn't give a crap about the Hobbit movie?
MovieBob hasn't reviewed the movie I thought/hoped he would review in a while. I didn't even know this movie existed.
Speaking of Oscar Bait I want Bob to tear into it, I have only heard meh to terrible opinions. Ah and yes Prometheus looks really really cool.
Seems overly precious and contrived.
Wow good year for movies(LETS HOPE) OT: I,m oddly expecting the avengers movies to suck :'( i hope that makes me love it when it comes out. Otherwise im STILL gonna be dissapointed to see it turn out bad.
Thanks movie Bob for this opinion... It was quite interesting to get an american opinion on that movie. It changes me from the quite conventianal french critics. Though I sometime think you might have overbashed on it (especially with the Oscar thing, which wasn't at all what the picture was aiming at, at first, maybe the Césars, but never the Oscars), your critics are really well thought.
Having actually seen The Artist, I highly recommend it. I don't disagree with most of Moviebob's criticisms at all - the film's characters are underdeveloped and the story is formulaic - though I do think he's approaching it from a different angle. If I had to expand on his metaphor, I'd have to say that The Artist isn't a Starbucks, it's more like your local coffee shop; it provides the same service as a Starbucks, but the way it provides that service makes all the difference. In other words, The Artist isn't a pretentious oscar-baiting movie, it's just a deceptively simple movie; it does follow a formula, but it follows the perfect formula. It doesn't boast the intelligence or innovative qualities that Moviebob considers as requirements for Best Picture award winners, rather, it only boasts the massive amount of love and care with which it was clearly made, which makes it one of the best feel-good movies of all time; you'll be glad to have seen it.
Yeah I miss coming here every Friday looking forward to seeing one of the movies out now getting it head handed to it instead I get a lecture about how dumb I am for not being in to stuff from film festivals. I mean it not like some movie in the very tired possesion trend of movies came out today or anything. Its like he is becoming Brad Jones's Character the cinema snob.
Didn't even know they made movies like these anymore. Pretty interesting, but honestly looks way to cliche' to a whole lot of other movies I saw when I was little (or least the old movies that were free on Netflix.) So I shall not go see it but must say they did a great job keeping the spirits of that modern age up and running throughout the movie.
I actually hate you for suggesting Tree of Life last week. Such an awful pretentious mess. You know your movie sucks when even Sean Penn doesn't get it. This looks too much like oscar bait and not interesting enough for me, i'm not really a silent film person so I'll give it a miss, don't really care if it wins best picture.
Wait, what is Prometheus, and what makes it deserve a place between the only 2 movies I've ever looked forward to a year before their release??
You know, if anyone but Joss Whedon was directing it I'd be right there with you. But I just refuse to let this movie be anything but amazing, it's got too much of the things I love in movies. Still, I definitely see where you're coming from, there's just too much already given with the movie, not enough space for it to surprise or develop.
You know, DKR has quickly gone from one of my most anticipated movies this year to one I don't even plan to watch. There are a lot of factors for this, but the biggest one is simply Bane. And in this week's media sandwich Bob said pretty much the same thing for the same reason.
Ridley Scott Alien prequel.
Umm, he hasn't changed at all, it's award season, the movies are usually pretty good around this time because of the Oscars. Wait til Summer and he'll be raging again. In fact if they fuck up some of the movies he's anticipating, I doubt we'll here the end of it.
Ooh. That sounds interesting. Not as big of a fan of Ridley Scott as Jackson and Whedon, but I'll definitely keep my eyes out for that. Thanks!
Fun fact dunkin donuts plays a prominent role in that movie.
Well he directed the first Alien, so there really isn't a better choice. :P
Oh, of course, but I'm not as big of a fan of Alien as I am of LOTR either (Whedon doesn't have a big movie to his name, but I have immensely enjoyed his TV series).
