I was just wondering how different it is to be presumably working for the escapist rather than yourself, do you get deadlines or do you get to work at your own pace?
That made me laugh out loud, even without your response XD And your Malufenix duet is actually happening?! I... you... this... *headsplode* Edit: wait a second...
That looks strangely familiar...
The Morrowind soundtrack was all synthetic? Holy shit.
This comment fills me with rage. It's like she thinks she knows your own song better than you do or something.
I like that attitude of yours Mr. Soundwave. It reminds me an old saying (loose translation) : "Critic and eunuch are very alike Keep up the good work !
When the fuck did you get a time machine? OT: I really liked the Sovngarde song and found it completely fitting of what you were trying to do, sort of re-create some Viking Metal from whom the Nords were based upon. I found it seriously awesome. Very glad there wasn't a single meme too. Also, the pattern of Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Middle-Chorus is used pretty much everywhere. So many pop songs, rock songs, rap songs and even some club anthems use it. I bet I could find some Carol-Anne Duffy poems that could use it. Don't think it should be used as a critique, but should be praised when someone moves away from said formula. Calumon: Isn't it uncomfortable having a hard heart? :S
Youtube comments. I just... UGH! I wouldn't have even given them the time of day but Gavin seems to have an ability to respond to the worst comments and destroy them. So continue doing that! And if having you obsess about your music produces songs like these, please obsess more! Well, don't if you're going to have legitimate health concerns. I do want to say I did hear the orchestration and I'm eager to hear what you're going to do with your software now that you've got the options to mess around! Keep it up Gavin!
Gavin, you pack some serious bite. ;) Loved the Sovngarde track, and I'm quite pleasantly surprised you share my love for the Crysis 2 soundtrack.
Why oh why can't people just see that "he" (or in this case son) can just be a generic term not refering strictly to men, "children of the snow" would have sounded terrible and daughters wouldn't flow either. She's just one idiot tho, no big deal.
I actually assumed the deep growl round about the 3:40 mark on the short version was saying Fus Ro Dah, it made sense to me. What was that? Was it even a voice, or just a sound effect? My hearing is letting me down here.
'Sons' fits better with the Nordic theme as well. I doubt there were many female vikings.
"Fast forward to December 2012 and the obsessive behavior hit an all time high point" When did you use my time machine to go to December 2012. Adults these days, using my things, why when I'm older... Anyways. You defiantly deserve a pat on the back for making kick ass music and surviving through the seas of hate. Keep on rocking and aim high. If you hit the big times one day, I think you'll bring some much needed fresh air to the current state of some genres.
Its always nice to see criticism being torn to shreds, well, the non constructive or insightful criticism. Great song, great guy, great game.
This feature led me to the extended version of Sovngarde song... WHY WAS THIS NOT IN MY LIFE BEFORE!!! Boy oh boy, I thought the first one was brilliant. (Captcha: General Sastlder. New video game character. I'm fucking calling it!)
You'd be amazed how many people speak such self-imagined authority about the songs. That's the web for you!
"Deconstruction by Devin Townsend"
You can't go wrong with Hanz Zimmer really :) It was an amazing soundtrack, but as much as I enjoyed the game I did find myself thinking the epic music was deserving of a better story.
As this was mentioned with Nightwish's Imaginerum I am going to have to give this a listen. I would like to thank you for the great music you keep giving us. Especially in this era of studio-processed, auto-tuned to death, lowest common denominator, TV told me to listen to it, music.
I thought Sovngarde Song was some of your best work, and I'ts awesome to hear how much work you put into it. People say video games are worthless, this alone is proof of how very wrong they are. On a side note, would SOPA and PIPA completely destroy your method of business?
Sir Gavin is making *something* together with Malukah?
What the hell did that say? Change your style?! Gav, you're a master of versatility, don't let anyone tell you different!
Great story. Compelling, and rich. Love your dedication to the music (and our continued entertainment!)
Hey Gav, small question.
Yes. That right there? Right in my ears. Fantastic! Keep working your lyrical music-butt off Gavin - your songs are always a highlight on Wednesdays and has given someone like me (no favourite genre or band) a plethora of songs that I can always listen to, regardless of mood or game! Your album is worth the money :D
Few things to say.. 1. Your music was probably the only thing that kept me sane on two 10 hour car trips. Seriously, if it wasn't for songs that I could constantly (attempt to and fail miserably at) sing along with, I don't know what I would have done. 2. In said car trip I introduced a friend to your music. He was absolutely floored by the versatility you put into your songs and leave them all sounding natural for you to be singing. (His favorites went 3.Redemption Blues 2.Sweet L.A. 1.Sovangarde Song) 3. Can't wait to hear what you can put out with Kontact now. I had to use that program for a course at college, and even with what little I know of it, it leaves me very excited for whats to come! So all in all, Keep up the amazing work and I'll be listening for as long as you keep creating!
I love this song. I didn't know about the long version till now, which is also awesome. Its also really cool (although unsuprising really) to find out you're a Devin Townsend fan \m/
Ok, fixed that whole time travel thing. My bad!
I'm all for it, in fact I've plugged a few of them, like this one: and this one: I just ask that people don't monetise them without giving me a share, and if they simply steal my version and re-upload it I ask them politely to take it down, then if they refuse I get it ripped down and they get a nice little copyright strike, lol But yeah, I love seeing cover versions of my stuff :)
Susan is being too nice here by the way, it was my mistake in the original draft ;)
Sweet. I don't know how my singing voice is going to turn out when recorded - nor do I really know much about uploading to YouTube - but I might give it a shot.
I'm surprised that people think they can steal your songs and upload them to YouTube and still think they can get away with it :/ Oh well, so long as you win over them in the end! Keep up the awesome work!
I'm always rather surprised with some of the criticisms you get. You know, stuff like you don't vary your style enough. I mean, -sure- there's an underlying style, and it's always your vocals which can't help but add similarity from song to song, but seriously? Most of your songs are pretty damn different. I'm also very much looking forward to hearing your piece with Malukah. ;D Looking forward to it!
You should make an album with all 33 versions of Sovengarde Song, I'd buy the hell out of it.
Agreed! I'd love to hear the progression of the song from start to finish!
I had to stop and laugh for a bit when i read that about how you should "change up your style" more, it's as if the person hadn't listened to your library at all >_> And that think about sexism... geez. I don't think there's neither a face nor palm big enough to express how i felt about that. That's really a pretty big part of why i don't usually look through comment sections on youtube... they still feel too safe in expressing their bull shit. "Sons of the snow" seems like a perfectly fine way to say it unless you're one of those feminist nuts... I never heard this sort of commotion when Phil Collins did "Son of man". As for heavy metal in the medieval times i really don't see anything wrong with it. Like you said it reflects the barbaric tone of their lives pretty well, and it's not like any music produced today to sound like it did back then would be 100% accurate anyways. If you wanted that you'd do a live-performance unplugged with a lute or something <_<
