Sonic the Poacher

Yahtzee hates hedgehogs, but loves poachers.

Don't let criticisms get you down, Yahtzee. If making games on the side is fun for you, do it and sod anyone who complains. As long as you're having fun. And not hurting anyone. (see above)

I was sort of expecting a review of Sonic Colors, especially since you hinted at reviewing it back in late 2010. Then again, you did say that, like Resident Evil 4, it does alright due to a plot diet.

You mean that wasn't Sonic on the first page?

Then why did the photo say "Sonic Punctuation?"

Sabrestar:

No, they merely make brain bleach necessary.

Congrats on finishing a project using GameMaker. I started to make a game on it once and gave up when I realized that the code would be openly available because of the way GameMaker works. Ignoring the fact that no one would want to steal my code anyway.

I did manage to remake minesweeper using it. Minesweeper seems to be the test I give myself to see if I know how to use a programming language because I also made a version of minesweeper in Excel using VBA.

Can he really say that the general response to Sonic was 'what were you expecting'? I seem to remember the general feel to be, 'actually, it's pretty good'. (mixed with the occasional complaint and some eternalnothingness bashing).

Anyway, eh, I'll check out this Poacher game when it's released, sounds like it could be interesting. Though I think people have every right to be overly critical of something produced by someone as hilariously overly critical as Yahtzee. Judge not lest ye be judged and all that.

I'm a total Sonic fanboy who loved generations, but you didn't get any backlash from me last week because I'm a big fan of yours and I'm familiar with your review style, and by your standards you weren't THAT hard on it. I was just happy to see a game I liked appear on your show.

'm interested in playing the bunny poaching game. And... Sonic? Who even talks about him anymore?

HEY! No one disses BTVOTD on my watch, it's one of my favorite films ever.

Should have called it Hobo with a Shotg.. Oh wait.

And maybe the game was for Sonic Fanboys with mental disorders that mean their brain doesn't develop fast enough.

CardinalPiggles:

He's from Yorkshire, he's not homeless...

This resulted, in a roundabout way, in me discovering Yahtzee's first ever video.

I would like to play this game of yours. Also I figure sonic is no longer valid in any form. They should just give up on sonic and spread the team to other areas in the office.

Ironically, I think Sonic was the game that changes the feel zone to zone.
Every stage had a different environment, soundtrack, enemies and traveling mechanisms.
Even though it was all the same gameplay, and many shapes recurred, (ie: the loop-de-loop), each area had its own gimmick to keep things interesting.

Did Yahtzee do this on purpose?

EDIT:

OhJohnNo:

LOL
I just looked that up today.
It was a Mogworld Easter-egg.

Wait... "secret extra hard boss fight"? God damn it, that sounded like a game I would enjoy up until right there! I can't do anything that requires skill! It's why I play Call of Duty. (Hardy har har)

I was kind of expecting some kind of fanboy backlash in response to the Sonic Generations video, but the general response was more along the lines of "well, what were you expecting?" Sonic being rubbish just seems to be something everyone accepts about the world. Like cancer.

Excuse me? What posts were you reading? Because I read a couple that disagreed with you without breaking out into nerd rage. And no Yahtzee, I think with both this and Colors, (and to a lesser extent Unleashed) people have finally stopped thinking that. The only people that still complain about Sonic are the truly lifeless invertebrates that think bitching about eye color is a fair criticism. God, for a game critic you really don't keep up with your crap that much, do you?

Bobic:

That's pretty much the vibe I got, too. I was honestly a bit surprised that there weren't as many people hating on the game as I imagined there would be.

Between Generations, Colors, and Sonic 4, I'm honestly quite happy with the franchises current direction. I'm not saying there won't be any more bad games, but I'm not worried about a repeat of Sonic 2006 either.

Agreed. Yahtzee tore into Unleashed like it was the gaming equivalent of Hitler, Generations just seemed to get a few slaps in the face. If that. And even if he had, I wouldn't have made a stink about it. I love these newer modern Sonic stages, and I've loved them since Unleashed. I rarely expect to actually agree with these reviews.

CardinalPiggles:

Yes, you would have to be quite mentally deficient to enjoy this game. You are clearly superior to all of these people.

Grow up.

Hmm... I might actually have to this. I think playing a game that was made by an extremely caustic game critic might end up providing some valuable insight on what makes the man tick.

Or maybe it won't and I simply will have played another indie 2D side-scrolling shooter which may or may not stand out from the crowd. There's only one way to find out. Let me know when it's done. For science.

Yahtzee go play vanquish.

"I've just cacked me pants" is now something I keep hearing in my head...

Anyway, given the insane amount of time I'm spending with some Metroidvania-like games such as Aquaria and oh God, Cave Story, this one interests me quite a bit. I like the variety of different environments shown in the trailer; always loved the great old ones that had it, like Adventure Island 2 and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy.

Yahtzee's game sounds interesting. It may just be me, but I can't wait to play it. ^_^

Hmmm, well my thoughts to this are:

#1: I guess this means "Fun Space Game: The Game" is dead? Sad because I thought your (Yahtzee's) space adventure game "Galaxy Of Fantabulous Wonderment" or whatever it was called was quite fun and amusing when I played it all those years ago. Ironically it's because of THAT game (and a few other freeware works) that I ever wound up following Youtube reviews and eventually this video series. :)

I guess I should be sadly humming a dirge here.

#2: I wonder how long it will be before Poacher "rule 34" appears. I've always kind of thought that the trend towards unusually gorgeous female characters in video gaming might be an attempt to mitigate the "creepy factor" when fanboys start working for it. I suspect the eventual results (as obscure as they might be) to the protaganist of poacher will be... disturbing, given that same sort of fugly working man vibe.

I'll leave it to your imagination if I'm serious about this, and use this logic to rationalize gaming trends, this however brings me to something more frightening:

#3: Yahtzee, you've been around the neighborhood of the Internet for long enough where you have doubtlessly heard of this group of people called "furries". Those who are obsessed with and typically sexualize anthromorphic animals to the exclusion of other interests, going so far as to dress up in fursuits to have sex with each other and so on. It's actually more sizable than you might imagine, and has quite a solid prescence on the internet and throughout the connected genres of fandom. This subculture keeps many things alive including entire catalogs of pornographic (and non-pornographic) comic books, and various old TV series like "Ducktales", "The Mighty Ducks", "Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers", and others.

Sometime the brave who are unaware might want to head out and do a search for sonic porno, and suddenly the increasing cast of characters involved in his storylines make a degree of sense. You'll notice there is one that seems almost optimized for any fetish you can think of.

The point is that I think Sonic survives largely due to the furries, who to be honest are grateful for any attention and products they get as many subcultures are, and to whom quality matteres less. Some of the more esoteric Sonic games represent a sort of wish fulfullment fantasy accross genres sort of like people's fanfictions come to life. Putting Sonic in gothic horror, or the middle ages to fight The Black Knight, or whatever is exactly the kind of thing this subculture does in fanfiction, or with their own creations involving their own characters.

I know a lot of people won't care for this point, but I think the furry interest and influance is greatly underestimated. I think for a long time Sonic has been being supported by this group, and it's actually only recently that we've seen games directed at the mainstream fans, rather than a niche group which overlaps heavily.

If your wondering who buys it, well again, look at all the energy put into it by the furries and then ask yourself if people that obsessed, who oddly even take their entire sexual identity from such things in many cases, aren't going to buy and support these games?

I would love to see a big name publishing company with a big name developer team working with Yahtzee to create the game of his dreams. How amazing would THAT be?! I'd certainly play it.

Oh, I rather disagreed with you and really loved this one Sonic game for what it is. The nostalgia through the Genesis and Dreamcast sections really worked for me and I really liked the changes for 3D Sonic Levels. Oh there WERE issues, I did miss my homing attack when I didn't have it, some of the optional levels could have used some polish, the game was too short, but these were hardly deal breakers for someone ready and willing to forgive everything after Sonic Adventure. It felt as though you ragged on the game just because it was Sonic and his games tend to suck lately. The review felt safe, too easy. It was as though it was expected of you and you complied for internet sheep you herd around your safe, yellow, un-punctuated fields.

I got to play it months before you would have spoiled it for me and before you would have left a bad taste in my mouth. As such I got to enjoy the game with very little preconceived negative thoughts and had a really good time of it. If that makes me a stupid sheep I'll gladly wander off into a semicolon pit somewhere.

I've learned not to yell at the troll under the bridge for telling me the grass on the other side isn't green enough. I've learned to be cautious, but to try the grass before listening to the troll. And then what good is the troll really? Just someone that validates my opinions or someone I disagree with.

Just wanted to say good luck on your Poacher game, Yahtzee; I really enjoyed Art of Theft and look forward to giving this a try.

Yahtzee is releasing another game after all this time?

Color me enthused.

I was taking the trailer seriously until the "most overused youtube epic music" started playing. I don't know if it was ironic on purpose but still... The game itself looks fine though, gameplay wise.

Yahtzee Croshaw:
That small percentage of you who still read my personal blog that I never update...

What are you on about? Last night I read the first two chapters of Articulate Jim. I'll probably read more of it this evening.

Woah! Why so serious?

I was just crossing the two obvious target audiences into one.

(And for the record my Brother is 16 with a mental age of about 10, so I was in no way taking the piss dude)

No need to be so defensive, jeez.

You know, for someone who frequently discusses how inexplicable it is that there is enough funding for more Sonic games, he does seem to have bought damn near all of them in recent years. Seems a fairly simple reason, no?

darkmind35:

Oh, you meant that music. I was curious. But, likewise, I can't take it seriously anymore. There was a really dramatic porn (wow, that's a phrase you don't get to use that often) that used this music, once, and once you see that...it's just hard not to associate things.

I said it on Youtube and I'll say it again: Modern Sonic has to tell Classic Sonic he'll have a good future, for two reasons:
-If CS knows his future will suck, he'll take steps to change it, which would be Sonic '06 all over again.
-Infinite time loop: MS knows what to say because that's what was said to him when he was CS.

In other news, that game looks pretty fun. I know you've played a lot of Metroidvania, so hopefully you'll have learned a few things from them. Like how in Symphony of the Night, you can fly backwards out of rooms and all the monsters respawn...

Wait? I don't get the "who is this game for" bit. Are you implying a game can be for only one target audience? The game is for both kids and older people with nostalgia, just like every single Nintendo game.

darkmind35:

It was probably just used for the irony. Yahtzee states on his site that he's looking for some proper music to put in it, so rest assured that this isn't representative of the actual soundtrack for the game.

But yeah, looks good for a laugh I suppose.

aidopotato:
HEY! No one disses BTVOTD on my watch, it's one of my favorite films ever.

Yahtzee, e'er this night does wane, you will drink the black sperm of my vengeance!

Anyway, this poacher, does he have any dead fish in his pants?

EDIT: I remembered the full quote.
