E3 Preview: The Last of Us

I would like to see more, this seems so far so interesting.

Jesus man, that sounds... awesome. First game in a long time to really get me interested right off the bat.

Cautiously optimistic.

There's a lot of good here to like, and the setting of post-apocalpyse is one of my favourites.

The only negative I can see is partner AI. I don't trust it in any game, and a game built around two people working together could be ruined by one partner being a liability instead of a help.

But that's the only nitpick. Tone, characterisation, setting, graphics look very fine...

This could well be the game that convinces me to buy a PlayStation 3.

Sounds like this has the potential to be a properly made zombie-apocalypse game for a change.

I've been interested in this game since I saw the first trailer, ever since I read about cordyceps fungi a few years ago I thought it'd make a great idea for a zombie apocalypse story. And with it being naughty dog..... well I was expecting good things.

I'm glad they've not gone for the shock and awe approach though. As much as incredible set pieces are naughty dogs bread and butter, they've always handled character interactions brilliantly.

Any new IP by Naughty Dog deserves my undivided attention, and probably and immediate preorder, and The Last of Us is no exception. Seriously, this looks awesome.

Could be interesting, as long as it doesn't have zombies.

It has something of the sort in these weird human infected by some sort of fungi.

My mental nickname for this game is "I Can't Believe It's Not Ellen Page." Other than that, though, I'm looking forward to it.

Ellie will be what makes or breaks this game, but I'm not going to consider buying it until they announce the multiplayer content.

Let's see how it goes.

Sounds pretty neat... but I don't have a PS3. :(

I shouldn't be this impressed that a game set after the apocalypse has actual color in it. But then, that's what I get for skipping out on Dead Island. Like everyone else has said, Ellie's going to make or break the game. The article made having to worry about her a little bit like an escort mission, except it's the whole game. Which, I'd make a pun or a metaphor or something about the number of people who like escort missions, but I'm too lazy. (Hint: no one does)

Please make the controls better than Uncharted. Please. I love everything about the game so far, literally everything, but please make it fun to play.

the second trailer is even better than the first one

sadly it still has non human monsters..

and sony is trying to copy a lot of nintendo titles

little big planet cart = mario cart
PS All-Stars Battle Royale = super smash brothers

Definitely interested in this game, have been since I saw the original trailer for it. I think the big breaker for it is if it turns out being like RE4 with our new protagonists reprising Leon and Ashley's roles. So far I'm seeing that as a worst case scenario, and since this is Naughty Dog we're talking about making this game I'm not too worried about that. I'm watching this one an hoping for a new spin on the biological apocalypse that doesn't tread the same path that everyone else seems to have done.

Well that's disappointing, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised given current trends.

I really don't understand why Ashley was such a terrible NPC to escort for some people. Gameplay-wise she does everything you need her to: staying out of your line of fire. When you aim your gun, she moves behind you. If not, she ducks underneath your aim. She knew her place and didn't try to help you (Sheva was HORRIBLE by comparison), so the only inputs you needed to give her were hiding in a dumpster where nothing can touch her or holding her position presumably in a safe location.

Escort missions obviously suck when handled poorly, but not all of them are.

OT: Anyways...so Ellie gets captured by bandits? What do they need a teenage girl for, anyway?

dont know.

what do male humans do with a female humans in every survival/apocalypse/war movie/book/game?

tip: its not a musical number.

...Caboodle?

seems like a great movie

wish they would've mentioned a single element of actual gameplay by this point though.

What's that? A vulnerable female character is kidnapped and threatened to motivate a grizzled male protagonist, and he will have to employ violent means to rescue her?

It's an original premise. I think there's some really profound discussions of normative gender roles and psychology to be mined out of it. I look forward to deep satire and reflection upon how our evolutionary origins clash with the nature of civilisation in a world where we're forced to come up with new social orders rather than simply rely on tradition. I'm sure that will all be in there.

So you take a middle aged Nathan Drake protagonist and Ellen Page, and throw em in I Am Legend.

You know...I'm really not to thrilled because it doesn't sound as revolutionary as they make it out to be. Just seems like another third person shooter with probably cover and infected critters. Oh and bandits. Lots of filler bandits to kill to reach your destination. Make it kinda sappy like I Am Alive tried to be and BAM its a game for the times.

Yaawwwwwnnnn. I know it sounds like it could be well made, but it also sounds rehashed from other popular/not so popular games/movies so its going to have to do something spectacular.

But it has the potential to be much much more. There could be stealth, there will probably be multiple ways to reach the objective, the story actually has something to it, even if it does fall to the standard gender roles. Like the article said, it sounds like someone made "The Road" into a game sans nuclear holocaust and changed the son to a daughter figure.

My ears still hurt from all the censoring =_=.

God damn now I gotta buy a ps3! This game looks so excellent. Anyone see the end of the Sony press conference? That demo was excellent!

Both "The Last of Us" and the recently announced "Watch_Dogs" are the only two games so far that have genuinely impressed me, and considering I am jaded as fuck with the whole industry that is really saying something. "The Last of Us" looks to be literally what I've always wanted in a survival game; survival. Only 4 bullets to start with and a health bar that is in danger of being depleted even in brief cutscene-like events. An inventory system that does not pause and makes you think on your feet. Conservatively using ammunition and strategically screwing with the enemy so that they won't know where you are. That is survival.

With "Watch_Dogs", while I think the gunfight at the end was a bit contrived and necessary, the presentation and concept was very interesting, almost like a pseudo-futurist espionage intelligence gathering sort of thing.

"Beyond", Quantic Dream's new game, also looked very interesting, and at some points the game looked like real life to me, though I would prefer to see some more cohesive gameplay from Quantic Dream. Overall a fairly decent day for E3, I'd say.

My problem with Ashley was the dumb bitch got snagged in cutscenes doing shit that I would have been able to keep her from doing if I was in control and the fact that she sounded like a cat in a tumble dryer screaming every time she got grabbed.

Welp, at least she'll let you know that she's being caught. It'd be annoying to be in the middle of a fight and then suddenly Leon drops to his knees and says "oh no" because Ashley got captured without you realizing it.

Aside from that, seriously though, what purpose would capturing Ellie serve for your enemies? It's explained why your enemies need to capture Ashley in RE4, but in this game? I'm guessing ransom money? Not that there's much money flying around in an post-apocalyptic setting.

Considering the emphasis the first trailer put on the scarce nature of ammunition, I think it'll be much more about avoiding danger than running through it guns blazing.

Atleast, that's what me and a lot of other people are banking on.

I'd be happy to see a good, character-driven game, but we seem to be in an era where either the "character driving" mostly occurs within cut-scenes or the way the characters interact with the game-play frequently causes them to be more irritating than endearing. There's some suggestion, from what I've seen, that "Last of Us" is trying to buck the trend, making your companion useful in ways that are different and integral and yet don't make you feel the character you play has been "sawed off" to give the companion meaning.

We shall see.

Okaaaaaaaaaaaay, I guess I missed it.

What's so good about this game? I do not see its appeal.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand, still don't see the appeal. Survival? How about...they give you no weapons at all throughout the entirety of the game? That would be survival. Still wouldn't interest me.

Well here's an actual gameplay video. The AI actually is pretty damn amazing. I don't think they could fake a sequence like this in a press conference.

Then clearly the games not aimed at you.

I'm not going to go on a puzzle game thread and go.

Puzzles? Why not make all the puzzles math puzzles? That would be a puzzle game. Still wouldn't interest me though.

if I wasn't a fan of puzzle games.
