Jimquisition: Why Do People Hate EA?

WaitWHAT:
Wait, I know EA is evil, but what does activision do, besides the whole CoD schmuck?

I think Activision's been doing that thing with Call of Duty (dragging out a franchise while avoiding original ip's like the plague) for years though, with examples being Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero. These IP's weren't bad, they just got drug out to a point where there was no way for the developers to make new ideas in time for their yearly release, and so they just got more and more bland until they (eventually) died with a whimper.

Also, they ride the whole day 1 DLC bandwagon a lot along with generally useless DLC. Remember during the days of COD MW2 when they charged $15 dollars for 2 new (ugly) maps and 3 maps from COD4? So, they basically try to rip you off on the value vs. content level all the time.

I have been waiting for this episode for a long time. This episode was even longer then most and it still couldn't touch on all the crappy crap EA does. I bet much of Jim's points didn't even need much research because it's all too easy to recall the shit EA puts it's customers through on a daily basis. Seriously, fuck this company and thank God for Jim!

[I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please and Jim is sexier then EA is evil. That's a whole lot of sexy.]

You know, Jim may be smug, he may be arrogant, but my god does he hit the nail on the head so many fucking times, it's unbelievable. His show went from shit not worth watching to Extra Credits levels of interesting.

Also...
[I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please. Also Jim is sexy. All of that in one thing. So do that and then, I willlll contact one person at random with a private message on the forums and if you give me your address, I'll send you this and nothing else threatening or bad. If you want. US residents only because I'm very cheap and I just want to mail this by normal mail. That's it really, thank god for me and you can get a shirt or something if you want.]

=D

Still doing it, even though I'm not a US resident and he won't send it to me, that cheap, sexy fucker.

The hilarity of this video is increased exponentially by the fact there is an article about EA slashing prices on origin games, after it said not a few weeks ago that Steam was cheapening IP's by slashing prices and doing insane sales.

The hypocrisy is nearly mind boggling! I have no idea what is going on with EA, we can see all the symptoms, contradictory press statements to actual actions undertaken by the company, horrible manipulative marketing, crappy reboots and dead studios littered across the floor and of course game budget inflations to the fucking extreme.

We can see those things happen. We can't see what's causing those things to happen. I don't believe all people are morons at the echelon of EA. I don't believe that. I don't believe that they are all money hungry leprechauns ready to kill for a nickel.

It just seems that EA is incredibly incredibly Naive. Yes Naive.

I just can't see them as similar to Activision, the company run by Kotick, a man who went on record stating he hated gaming, games, game making and gamers in general. It seems more that every single time they try something it starts out with a good intention, like syndicate.

2K was doing an old franchise reboot and EA thought, let's do that to. However the farther and farther they got in the less they actually knew what to do with it. So then they fumble it by making a shooter, break it with a generic by the numbers story, then hide it under the carpet by adding coop mode and then hope mom doesn't find it.

It's not their fault they can't change, they just don't have any kind of leader figure on board that can take the reigns.

[Also I would very much like that L sized shirt. I will shrink it down to an M with a few washes in no time.]

darthzew:
I was right with him when he said the he used to like EA. There was a time when they could have been right up there with Valve in terms of being the coolest publisher, but they're not. EA has done more to make me groan in the past few years than any other of the major publishers. That doesn't make them the worst, that just means I deal with EA more.

Me too, man. I remember after I heard about them saving Brutal Legend thinking: "Sweet! EA's investing in original IP's and is making Activision look like a bunch of ponces!"

It took about a year afterwards to realize that EA's one good deed had to be one of the last. Also, Online Passes have no excuse in a pro-consumer market, and the fact that EA acts like they are their basic right pisses me the hell off.

Captcha: That's enough

You said it, Chewie.

Normal comment not like a daft cunt.

[I would like a shirt because I would like to appear similar to the great Sex God Jim, praise be upon him and the shirt he should send me]

makes me glad that ea split from steam to form origin that way i can just ignore them

btw that shirt is teh sex to bad im too fat to wear it

subtlefuge:
At least EA isn't IGN. Seriously, how does that happen?

[I would not mind a shirt. I know it could not contain your sexiness, but maybe it will have room for mine.]

Judging by how biased IGN's interview was, I was under the impression that they were EA.

Asking anybody or anything "why do people hate you?" will never answer the question. I can't give an answer to why the kids hated me in elementary school.

A rant I can totally get behind. As much as I love some of their franchises (Dead Space in particular) EA seems wholly content to run them in the ground and doom them to mediocrity. I can only hope they pull their heads outta their asses and actually realize how bloated they've become and-yada-yada-yada pretty much what you said Jim.

(I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please, also Jim is quite quite sexy.)

The worse thing about EA isn't that it's so evil, but because it constantly brings our hopes up with great ideas, only to shit on them with bloated fat cat ideas that punish us for not having the riches to buy up every game like it's quarter candy.

Battlefield 3 is the perfect example I'd say. Anyone who didn't have the money or was worried about spending $60 on a new copy of the game was fucked out of getting to enjoy the multiplayer, a harsh punishment. However, it then REWARDED people who made the investment by giving out free DLC...see what's wrong with this? Instead of letting us all enjoy the multiplayer and rewarding those who bought it, it punished the poor and helped the rich...wait...why does that sound so familiar? Rich getting help from those in power? Holy shit, EA is the Romney of video game corps! Does that mean that Activision is the Tea Party, or just Satan taking over after the 2nd coming?

I just wish they'd step up their game. I still cry out for a special Madden buying discount, every year you buy a Madden game consecutively, you get a discount on buying the new one, or something special every year you buy more. Means that you don't pay full price for an expansion, and those who do buy it yearly get rewarded instead of having their rear-ends hurt after they get home from buying it and sitting down

[I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please, also Jim is sexy]

I really liked the episode, but to me it seemed a bit underfleshed. You could have taken it in so many different directions Jim.

EA is the only company in which I told myself "I'm not buying that game, EA made it". On multiple occasions. Even games that I initially wanted, and badly, I had to re-think before purchasing because of EA's practices towards me. 'Treat every customer like they steal from us.'

On a side-rant: I am a hardworking loyal customer. You know what my piracy record is? - Music I could not legitimately find and buy, and Pokemon games so I could play them at a faster rate than on my DS or GBA (while I did not own Ruby version, one of the copies I downloaded, I did own Sapphire and Emerald. And they stopped selling new copies of Ruby when I did it. And it was modded). When it comes to consumerism, I am fairly honest - I'll only download it if its a game I already own an iteration of (for example, I wouldn't feel bad about downloading Kingdom Hearts 2: Final Mix since I own Kingdom Hearts 2 and the final mix variation never came to the states) or if the company is no longer making money off of the product (at this point, the only people making money are thrift shops and people on ebay, who's only contribution to the game was purchasing it at some point). I have even gone as far as buying legitimate copies of games for friends who pirate said games because I either wanted to play with them or I felt the developers deserve it.

I am not the kind of person who downloads a game on its first day of release, cracks it, any plays it without consideration of the hard work that went into the game. Yet, every single new release I am asked to fat-thumb in a code to make sure that I did in fact buy the game. And not only did I buy it, but I bought it new. All to be able to access content that was already on the disk. Their changing of the ToSA and EULA piss me off to no end. The reason I buy most games as console games is because owning a HARD copy of a console game means that I own the game, not a license to the game. EA has made it so that even if I do own the game, I have to sign a license agreement to play it - which is just slimy. Not to mention their clause that basically says "btw, you cant file a class action suit against us if you plan on playing this game". They act like cancerous tumors - even in an environment filled with vitreous consumer practices.

And while EA certainly does have a large amount of gems in their library, I feel as though most of them, especially in recent times, are tarnished by association. Kingdoms of Amalur was a fantastic game that I almost didn't buy because of its connection to EA. The ability to buy armor that would carry you through the game was a cheap tactic that scarred this beautiful game - it made me feel like if I wanted to maximize my gameplay, I had to throw extra money at the game. And it undermined a crucial aspect of the game as well.

Mass Effect 3 was a trainwreck as well. In the last 5 hours of the game, the ball was dropped so many fucking times, it was ridiculous. Tali's face (lets even go as far as Legions Geth Mission) showed that the art team was lazy. "We wanted to give tali a real face" - well then give her one instead of doing a 3 minute, badly done photoshop. You could put Jessica Chobot into the game to please IGN, but say screw you to a huge portion of your fan base? The ending was horrible - I believe the theories of his Indoctrination simply because of how many refferences and allusions have been made to it over the series. BioWares admittance that it was false just says "we put these clues in by accident. Those were us just dropping the ball. over and over and over and over and over again. And while we thank you for having faith in us, LOLOLOLOLOLOL UDUMB."

And as for the games that aren't EA's Gems - I'm so happy that I can spend $60 on a 4 hour campaign with repetitive and dry mechanics. Thank god this is a 'new IP'. Its disrespectful that they release games like that, when I can find better values on XBLA.

Seriously - I've been ripped off by EA enough. They have made bad games - so has everyone else. Now they are in the business of ruining and dumbing down their good franchises to make things 'work better' or 'sell better'. Its not enough that I work hard for my $60 - EA now feels that I should either invest more, or have no appreciation for the work I put forth just to cash in on ignorance.

[I would like a gravity rush shirt please. Also Jim is sexy. Do all of that in one thing]

Dexter111, you're a celebrity!!

Also, yeah EA seem to have become an embodiment of what's wrong in this industry right now. Of all the shit other publishers do, EA somehow manage to do all that and then some.

Love the episodes, especially the "Activision: At least we're not EA" XD

I would like a gravity rush shirt please, also Jim is sexy

I'm glad at least one person with a loud enough voice calls these things out. Too many press sites are afraid to badmouth publishers in fear of losing review copies and opportunities. This industry needs to be saved by the gamers. I don't want to see it due.

[I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please. Also, Jim is sexay.]

Thing is, EA does nothing to actually attract consumer. They want to milk from start to finish, although everybody knows that you need to lure consumer with something and only then milk. For example you can't make money with shitty DLC for a shitty game, you need a good game to begin with.

Thank you for responding to that article. I remember thinking about how ridiculous it was when I read it.

I also have the problem with shirts making my moobs look really big.

Here is to hoping that when/if Dragon Age 3 is released EA will wake the fuck up and clean their act up a little. EA won me over with games like American McGee's Alice, SSX series, Black and White, Burnout series, Freedom Fighters, and Mutant Football or Hockey games(Did not know about this until just not).

Oh yeah and before I forget
(Jim is just too sexy for that Gravity Rush shirt and I am honored that he would grace me with even the chance to have an article of his clothing)

You said it, Chewie.

The problem is the Online passes are their basis rights. Its their product they can sell/rent/do whatever they want it.

They dont have a right to your money however so what they can do, and what is a good idea is 2 very different things here. Anyway the second good deed EA did this year was promise anyone who made kickstarter funding on their project 90 days off free distribution on Origin. Say what you like about Origin, but free distribution is free distribution and giving the option to a new developer is a good thing.

But otherwise I get the feeling that it is a question of competence rather than intent. Half of the time I get the feeling EA is run with one incompetent leader and one competent employee trying to fix the stuff he breaks.

I like how EA creates a decent franchise, bloats the budget and kills it due to the need of millions of sales. At least Activision has realistic expectations of how its franchises will sell, and aside from the milking of Call Of Duty I don't think Activision is all that bad.

[I would like that Gravity Rush t-shirt Jim, you are a sexy Godlike Adonis ascended from the heavens to spread the word of video game news in a humorous fashion.]

Jim, once again, you're right on. I admit I can irrationally hate EA for ruining Mass Effect 3 (even though that is unsubstantiated accusation, not actually based on fact and the fact that I'm still pretty bitter about the ending being such a slap in the face) or for being competition-killing assholes for making sure there won't be another 2K Games-made NFL games (I still hold the opinion that ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last truly great realistic football game) until the NFL realizes EA is not good at their jobs, but that's really the reason why; they've eschewed improving the video game industry by providing great products at a lower price in favor of every bad habit that's running rampant in video games today (lousy DRM, withholding content in order to wring out more money as DLC instead of making it an extra, online passes that treat players like criminals, etc.) and making it even worse.

I gotta admit, the whole thing concerning Dead Space's required sales numbers really really rubbed me in the worst possible way.

It's becoming extremely difficult to want to support them nowadays, when mere years ago they were taking super adventurous and risky leaps WITH new franchises LIKE Dead Space and Mirror's Edge. Now...

Well, something will happen eventually. I'm not doing the Battlefield 3 Premium crap, not playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer and haven't got any plans to pick up or play anything BUT Dead Space 3 AFAIK right now.

So, hopefully this might send a message, assuming other gamers will be practicing the same refusal of play and purchase.

[I want that Gravity Rush t-shirt. Also, Jim is super duper sexy and I want his babbies.]

Okay, how about I use different wording then. -ahem-

It's an INCREDIBLY STUPID idea to alienate potentially loyal customers by giving them the finger whenever they buy the game you published used.

Well I'm a whore.

[I would like the Gravity Fall t-shirt, and I think Jim Sterling of the Jimquistion is sexy.]

Now days it seems like the only publishers I don't feel terrible about buying from are 2k and valve everyone else just seems to be in a race to fuck me over.
[I would like a gravity rush shirt please and also Jim is sexy]

Oh look, EA Stocks are falling!

I guess EA is gonna sacrifice "twice" as much newborn babies than they "usually do" to get the stocks back up

The Demon Lord of Creative Destruction and Misery was displeased with EA for giving him old people as a "substitute" last Fiscal Year since kidnapping Christan babies from the arms of their mothers was considered in the last Finical Report "too much of an investment and needed to cut costs" in true EA fashion, even their Dark Gods get the shitty end of the stick!

I remember EA doing the same thing back in the PS2 era and was criticized for it, they sorta turned a new leaf for a while, got popular and went back doing the SAME FUCKING THING THIS GENERATION!!

There's no hope for them, sheep-people need to stop feeding them cash and watch it DIE!

I have a bullet for most game publishers
(except Valve and Bethesda)
On the one for EA is written C&C :(

Jimothy Sterling:
Why Do People Hate EA?

The only difficult part in answering the question, "Why do people hate EA?" is deciding where to bloody begin!

Exactly!
Good Effort giving a brief overview in the vid, although of course it hardly even touched the surface of reasons - but that's impossible
(unless somebody writes a depressing book the size of war&peace)

I'll try to bluntly sum it up like this:
EA constantly sabotaged the Evolution of Gaming in pretty much every way I can possibly think of.
If I elaborate with even 1 Example I'd be going on for way too long, in writing only 1 chapter of that fictional book of "EA - Evil Absorption"

*boycots EA since 2005* - only thing i can do is vote with my wallet
(and fortunately I only missed mediocre to ok-games,because of it so far /only exception could be ME-series...but considering how that ended.....let's say not much regret there either)

I liked the intro. The "Hey Suckers" then diving into the content was much faster. I've never been hot for the padding in the beginning because you have plenty of interesting things to say.

And unfortunately...that's going to look like pandering now...

[I would like a Gravity Shirt Please, Also Jim is Sexy.]

Jim I LOVE YOU!
What you just said is what I write in every comment on some german gaming sites since ME 2.

But you know what, people buy more and more products wich are labeled "Fair Trade". That means
they care for the world and want that people can live by their work.

EA ruins the industry, treats customers like maggots, publishes half games with missing
content, sells this missing content for exorbitant prices via DLC and crushes developer
like bugs.

For me this is a moral question.

Are you a nice person or are you an evil guy.

EA consumers are evil in my perception,
nothing can justify that you support them.

My last game from EA was DA:Origin, wich technicially wasn't by EA, because
EA buoght Bioware when this game was nearly ready.

And you can see what happend in DA II

By the way http://spoonyexperiment.com/2012/05/29/ultima-9-ascension/

In the first 2 mins you can see, that EA does this since ancient times.
THEY RUINED ULTIMA!

EA is the fiend of all computer gamers.

Jim is so damn sexy, and I don't even need the shirt! comere, you!

I really dislike it when people are looking for reasons to hate EA, just waiting until EA does something just to hate it, even though they wouldn't dislike another company for those same reasons. There's really no point in doing that, EA gives use enough legitimate reasons to hate them anyway.
I equally dislike it when people, like Jim said, justify EA's behavior with "they're just a company doing business". That's a stupid justification and I'll never accept it as an excuse for what they're doing. Simply because they can do those things, doesn't mean I should forgive them for that.

And yeah, in some weird way it's actually funny how EA makes Activision look better simply because EA has become worse.

Jim you sir fucking nailed this one dead on perfect...

Hats off to you.

You sir have won an internet. No I can use this video when people ask "Why do you hate EA so much? They aren't that bad!!"

[also: I would like a Gravity Rush shirt please, and Jim is sexy]

I would honestly rather have a picture of Jim trying to wear the shirt rather than the shirt itself. Not a bad show, either.
