The Anonymous Source

Lying For Fun and Profit

I did always wonder where these "leaks" came from. And also where all my socks went.

Who's lying? This is Microsoft we're talking about.

Last time, it was a totally awesome game concept. This week, it's a totally believable look into anonymous sources the gaming business.

I'm not sure if you guys are joking anymore!

Socks never lie.

This is truth and fact and truth.

Daystar Clarion:

I wouldn't be so sure. I tend to find a few holes in their stories.

Meanwhile, at Microsoft...

"Sir. We have a problem."
"What is it?"
"It's this comic strip, sir. They know about the Dart Freeloader initiative."
"That bastard! He squealed on us! If only we had been able to use the brainial wave scrambler on him before he escaped..."
"Are you referring to..."
"Yes. Mr. Socks."
...
"Put the word out. I'll pay handsomely to the person who brings Socks in. Dead or alive."

Are you saying the great and glorious news writers engage in sock puppetry? Anyone seen Greg Tito in the flesh and was he wearing 2 socks?

Stop giving Microsoft ideas...

Critical Miss was joking?

Yet another in-depth report of fact from Sifl & Olly. Next up, their guest will be a guy from the city zoo singing about pandas.

Is that Deepthroat's long lost sock-son?

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be something humorous or a scathing commentary on video game
journalism. . . . .

prob a little from column A and a little from column B

I guess that the answer is "yes", even if yours isn't a question. ;p

Maybe you're just knit-picking now.

Never trust a journalist with athletes ear.

"Hay guyz, I live in Japan!"

Yeah that pretty much somes up a good chunk of their stories.

I wanted to groan because of the pun. But I ended up laughing anyway

Who's the fat guy?

Anyway I'm glad you've gone back to comedy.

That's why us American's have two terms for this kind of thing:

An anonymous source: We're making this up.

A source who wishes to remain anonymous: We may actually have a source on this one. But we're still probably making this up.

Captcha: the slogan "no time to waste" is associated with which car?

I have no goddamn clue. Seriously. Captcha questions are supposed to be things like, "What color's the sky" or "Is the Sun yellow," stuff that everybody actually knows, not this marketing crap that you'll only know if you pay attention to marketing.

And, seriously, I realize this is supposed to advertise the car to me, but I'm going to get it wrong, and have no idea which car was even being advertised at me. This is a total failure of both spambot testing and advertisement.

Edit: Picked one at random, happened to be it. Didn't pay enough attention to see which one it was.

I don't doubt that scanning for used games will eventually be done by someone, probably Ubisoft or EA. Then some patch will come along that will cause all those flagged consoles to mysteriously stop functioning.

I'd trust anonymous sources if I knew they liked big butts. Because people that like bug butts cannot lie.

Tito only wears socks.

It works for an anonymous any

Not just gaming business, I believe this technique is highly utilized in the sports media world as well, especially among trade rumour bloggers.

No news day? There's no such thing as a "no news day" when you stalk a ton of game devs on twitter. Like, Paradox Interactive is planning an TBS-RPG like Heroes of Might and Magic. I'm the only one that reported on that last week.

Oh, darn you...

Is that supposed to be a red version of Beast from X-Men?

it's kinda disquieting how legit that actually seems

THAT EXPLAINS EVERYTHING! My socks are leaking rumors about the new xbox, which is why they're no longer in my dryer! Genius!!!

You know, I would probably do the same thing at work. When you're always on the job and have to take it seriously because it's a business- you'll want to crank up the fun and humor one way or another. But it's all the funnier when your coworkers are doing it instead of you, and I wish to see that someday.

Then again, people around me would probably think i'm crazy using a sock puppet as an anonymous source lol.

This is pretty much standard procedure. A sock told me to kill Reagan once. Or maybe that was Jodie Foster...

"The Sock IS the News, the News IS the Sock."

Oho, didn't know Microsoft had snagged engineers from the customer relations department at BLAZEMONGER^TM INC.

He reminds me a little of Harry Knowles, but I'm not sure video games are in his wheelhouse.

I would not be surprised at all if something like this was the case with most "anonymous sources"
