The Summer of Arcade Sucks

Yahtzee takes a look at some of the Xbox's other Summer of Arcade offerings.

Two years in a row , there was an XBLA arcade tittle yz`s best of the year list . Shame really . Guess PSN`s line up for 2012 was better with Journey .By line up I mean only one game that is actually decent .
The end of the world will be marked with one of the shitiest game list in the recent history .
The only really good game that came out was Spec ops .

Although I disagree about the combat in Dust, it's good someone mentioned the colours of the protagonist's outfit. It really is awful.

I like the colour cyan :<

Loosely related story, I noticed in Tribes: Ascend there were a lot of people who had a specific team they preferred to play for. They were functionally identical, like TF2, on mostly mirrored maps, like TF2, with all the same classes accessible on both, like TF2.

And yet every game has at least one Blood Eagle(red) or Diamond Sword(blue) loyalist. It was bizarre.

The only difference I can think of at all is that rather than a single announcer for both teams, red has Vegeta and blue has some random woman.

Yahtzee Croshaw:
You probably thought I was going to be down on the whole furry art thing, didn't you. Well, I don't want to be one of those internet guys who claims that everyone who does the anthropomorphic art thing secretly wants to fuck dogs, because I'm sure it's just a vocal 90-95% percent who do.

That made me laugh.

This is completely false. Everyone knows you join the team that's winning in Team Fortress 2.

I tend to go out of my way to play as blue team in TF2, because on maps where one team attacks and the other defends (payload, CP, etc.), blue does the attacking, while red does the defending. I'll take a hard fought loss as blue over a victory on red any day, because of how boring defense duty frequently winds up being.

Edit: for those unfamiliar with the game, imagine sitting in one spot as medic, popping the occasional uber and defending it for 10 solid minutes. Congratulations, you've imagined a red victory at the last point on a payload map.

Hybrid doesn't even have the distinction of being innovating with its only moving from cover to cover as the equally awful free to play No Man's Land has the same set up. It fails there as well.

I think he's looking too much into Hybrid. On paper it sounds like the most generic idea ever but in practice it's actually quite fun and he does mention that. Honestly I found it to be a good game, not a great one, I mean i doubt anyone cares about the global conflict because either team you play you still level up the same and can buy guns for either side. The actual gameplay works great, the restricted mobility as at first is a bit awkward and the movement while in cover is a bit stiff (which I imagine it must be considering how crowded it can get) but you quickly find you can still go around and hit the enemy from behind. The only gun I won't ever understand is the sniper rifle, for a game that gets you into such close quarters there doesn't seem to be too many situations where it becomes useful.

But yah aside from an intro sequence in which even the narrator doesn't know what the story is (quite literally she just says lots of people died and that they have to fight the bad guys) there doesn't seem to even be one. Not that anyone really even cares about either faction or the story.

Great, now I want to play Usagi Yojimbo again.

I know I'd be horrible at it, though. The precision it required was fine when I was a teenager, but these days? Remembering just how long to hold the button for different strikes? Forget it!

One last word on Dust's visual design, though; we should have all figured out that cyan is a fucking hideous color around the C64 period. Please don't dress your main character exclusively in it.

Colour, colour damn it! What happened to you Yahtzee? You used to be English :(

He spellchecked, and removed unnecessary letters from a word, like a NORMAL person would do.

also, pedophile doesn't have an A. You can't waste too much time typing extra letters when warning people about child predators.

I really have to disagree with him on Dust's combat, I felt more in control of my character in that game than in any other, because I could actually move faster and maneuver better than an overloaded grocery cart. However, the damage really does scale badly; as soon as you get your first level-up, the enemies all go from "barrels of health" to "dead in a few seconds" threat status.

Papa and Yo says fuck you.

So, the guy ignored Sound Shapes, Dyad, Rainbow Moon and Papa and Yo for a remake, a kinect Angry Birds clone, two generic games, and a multiplayer shooter, yet blamed the XBLA for this. I mean, when you get fleas from petting a mangy dog, do you blame the dog?

oh right last year for the SoA there was "Bastion" ...no comparison :] that game was awesome

Well, he was talking about the XBLA platform. It's not like he said that all of this summer releases were bad, just the ones in XBLA.

Yes, but he's the one who chose to not review the ones on PsN. Its hardly like anyone is forcing him.

Hmm, good point. It say it's kinda like tradition for him

Yahtzee Croshaw:
And I'd like to ask how the game expects me to build a 1000-hit combo when half the enemies die in three hits.

That was actually the first achievement many people get, me as well. It's because I was playing on the difficulty higher then normal, and didn't grind Fidget's attack before meeting those purple flying dragon things. Getting a combo that big is easy if you just keep doing that dust storm magic combo thing in Archer's Pass or what ever it was called. Even when you fail you often get around 600-700 hits easy, it's just a matter of learning to chain the groups of enemies.

But yeah, Dust was by far the best of the bunch, and I don't mean of XBLA, I mean of every game I've played this year. Still isn't saying much though since I haven't been impressed at all with the lineup of 2012. Though Metroidvania games though are like sex on the beach for me, so hell yes!!

Exactly. Why NOT try out what PSN's offering, so he can compare it to XBLA?

Well Red ones go fasta. Though blue is lucky...

I'm also going to chime in with that psn had at least a few good once recently. At the very least you could point out how is you have play station plus (which costs as much as a NORMAL XBLA account) currently gets you a ton of free (fairly old) games.

As far as I know, PSN doesn't have an event where it showcases the best indie games of the summer. He mostly does XBLA reviews during the slow release months

I'm not saying he shouldn't review PSN games. Maybe he will considering the mediocre Xbox releases of this summer. But in this article he was analizing how this year Summer of Arcade
stands on its own merits

Yahtzee Croshaw:
. Listen, when you join a Team Fortress 2 server, which team do you join? You join the one that's losing or has less players, don't you.

Holy shit, I thought that I was the only one who always joined the losing team if both had the same number of players! Just this Sunday I joined a match on Hightower and carried the cart almost to the elevator, while the other team barely got it to the crossing. Then I switched teams and won. Granted, I don't pretend my contribution to that turnover was very far above negligible, except to myself, and it makes me feel good.

OT: I'm in Brazil and Microsoft has finally taken to calling it the Winter of Arcade here as well, except when it forgets doesn't, which is very very often. The little stupid briefcase menu where you can see all the games is also ridiculously offset and I can't even see anything that's near the right side of the screen.

I always pick red team when possible in TF2 because of Sarge from Red vs. Blue. You can never trust those dirty blues. The Blues never sleep! They're too busy plotting to destroy our way of life. That's how you can always spot a Blue. They're always conniving and scheming. Sometimes they do both! I call that... schenniving!

Then again, the list of really good XBLA games is fairly short. Which is a shame, though, as it really could feature a whole lot of different games instead of releasing a few ideas over and over again.

Just kidding.

But seriously, it's bad.

I pick whatever team has the best players or is currently winning. I'm a horrible sport like that.

U dissing on Cyan?

There is nothing wrong with cyan. There are a million colours uglier than cyan.

It seems to me that XBLA/XBLIG has a huge problem in that indie developers seem to hate it and/or find significantly more profit on other platforms:

It seems that this all adds up to the point where a lot of quality indie developers are simply refusing to develop for the XBOX.

Great post. Plus, Steam sales of those games tend to be way higher so maybe they just need to change publishers. PSN indie devs don't blast Sony, but platform-exclusive indie games feels like a wrong thing. Journey and Dyad are great, but being on all platforms can only be a good thing for everyone involved.

What are the Valve published indie games?

if we didn't have cyan, we couldn't have any printers, or indeed any CMY colours
plus, how many colours have had a samurai named after them?

That is all.

pink isn't a real colour

no seriously, look at the EM spectrum, no such thing, it's a construct made by our minds to bridge the gap between the two ends of the visible light spectrum, after all, what wavelngth is between red and violet? green, but that makes no sense, so our brains wrap the spectrum into a circle and make up magenta.
