The Big Picture: You Are Wrong About Sucker Punch, Part Two

SonOfVoorhees:
The director sucked at it, if you are correct, because you cant direct a movie full of overly sexualised characters, market it and sell it that way and then make it against those things. Same way you cant film an anti war film with over the top action, its either serious war is bad, or an over the top action movie - when you add both then its bullshit.

Clearly you have yet to play Spec Ops: The Line. I'd suggest it if you think that you can't critically annihilate something by aping it.

lacktheknack:

It doesn't require genius levels of intellect to bury metaphors into something...

It also doesn't require genius levels to invent them. I think this thread proves that.

That still doesn't make Snyder comparable to Kubrik except in the same sense I've already related.

I didn't watch the movie - or even read the entire comment threads.

But am I the only one who doesn't have a problem with this so call "exploitative entertainment". It's fantasy, it isn't real, no one gets hurt - assuming proper care was taken during production to protect the performers, of course.

Sure it's disagreeable to some. But so what?

It's escapism. It presents a fantasy world, that isn't possible in the real world for various reasons, to the audience to allow them to take a break from (depending on your quality of life; cold harsh) reality.

"Thus to authors in general much trouble is spared. A novelist, for example, need have no care of his moral. It is there-that is to say, it is somewhere-and the moral and the critics can take care of themselves. When the proper time arrives, all that the gentleman intended, and all that he did not intend, will be brought to light, in the "Dial," or the "Down-Easter," together with all that he ought to have intended, and the rest that he clearly meant to intend:-so that it will all come very straight in the end."

(c) E. A. Poe

I still feel it was a great movie. I took it at face value and enjoyed every minute of it. I should have felt ashamed or "sucker punched" for watching it, because it panders to eroticism which every healthy guy with normal testosterone levels enjoys? Won't happen. If the movie maker doesn't like the portrayal of sexy women in over-the-top action sequences, then they shouldn't do it. If they do it, no matter their intentions, they're still pandering as much as anyone else - ultimately sucker punching themselves, rather than the audience.

You cannot use porn to show that porn is bad. It's still porn and it adds to the pool of available porn. Also, porn is good.

I thought the movie was rubbish and nothing I've seen in these videos has changed my mind so how am I wrong about the movie again?

Even in the context of this analysis, my first and primary criticism of the movie holds up, that being you don't meet the women in the real world (presumed by me to be the asylum). Fantasy is irrelevant if it has no basis in reality.

Similarly, you can't criticize an audience for objectifying women if you don't present anything but fantasies to the audience. Give me some women characters to actually care about and I might actually care about them being objectified.

I just saw the movie because of Movie Bob's analysis and I have to say I couldn't disagree more. Bob is trying to extract something that simply isn't there. This movie is written, directed and produced by Snyder. This is his toy and he wants to play with it. As Blue says in the movie, everybody has been playing with Snyder toys, with 300 and Watchmen, and now he wants to play them himself. Play his repressed teenage fantasies in the big screen. It's an awful empty fanserviced CGI infested film disguised as having a message. And if someone doesn't like it, you can always say that they're too stupid to "get" the message.

Its so nice of you to admit stupidity, this rarely happens :)

Very good analysis, no wonder most people didnt like it, most people will never be able to look that deep. we dont have cure for stupid yet :(

It seemed to me that Baby Doll's plan was supposed to fail and that the whole thing was predestiny to get Sweet Pea the hell outta there cause she wasn't supposed to go and by the wayside put a light on the corruption of what was happening (the guy gets arrested at the end).
Still, I can find no fault with MovieBob's analysis and think it's pretty brilliant.
That said, I would love a cut of the film that had nothing but the battle scenes.
Maybe I'm part of the problem but I enjoy these action sequences regardless of the gender of the protagonist. I also like looking at women more than men.
I don't know who but it was obviously someone very misogynistic that decided that these two facts somehow warranted putting these two things together.
