It always surprises me that, that game even has a market outside of Japan. The way Japan sexualises women is very different from the way the west sexualises women (as a whole, not looking for exceptions because I know they exist.) Even on the tropes that we share, we're miles apart in representation. And I take more issue with the way the characters act in these cutscenes I always see, rather than the size and unnaturalness of their devils dumplings. And those faces....... those soulless, fish eyed.. cherubim faces! Stonking great titties? I got no beef with this. Even their weird movements, well it's not like the rest of the animations are realistic but... but those dead eyed plastic dolls....... they're searing my souls.
The "size" of the boobs doesn't bug me,(though anymore than a handful is just a waste) the movement of them I find EXTREMELY disturbing. Has team ninja never seen a woman walk or move? I mean yes breasts do bounce but not that much and not that independently. It's just creepy.
I have to say thanks for the link, i laughed my ass of.
I watched a few episodes of High School of the Dead. I spent the whole time telling myself to be ashamed of how much I sort-of-kind-of enjoyed it in all its awfulness.
I'll be honest; when I read 'Monster Boobs' I instantly thought of the Hour of Love panel in which Jim showed us his... physics engine.
you're obviously not a podtoid listener OT: Jim got a point, seriusly, who think those things are sexy?
Worse than making lame excuses? I doubt that.
As long as it's just shouting, I really don't give a damn. It's when the shouting stops, things start to get nasty.
Bullet ... Matrix style. Dammit Japan, if you weren't already an island, we'd have to isolate your ass all over again.
These are the kind of issues I'd like to see being dug much deeper into. The Dead or Alive series creeps a lot of people out, but it can't just be the alien breasts. There's something more to it - something sinister - something about the way Team Ninja treats women in their games in general. It's beyond aesthetic, it's beyond fetishization and sexualization, there's something in the way they do it that stinks. In fact, I'd condone someone writing an essay on this subject. There's something very, very wrong with Team Ninja.
Are you sure they're not your own?
You know it's shit softcore hentai that you know some people are watching one handed. But it's watchable shit in the same way the Mortal Kombat films are. If you get what I mean.
Whenever I see big boobs on anime/videogames, I always think that person has breast cancer, and that they live in a dystopian future where everyone clearly sees that there's something wrong, but no one does anything to help.
GET OFF OF MY SCREEN, GIGANTIC MISTS OF PANDARIA AD WITHOUT AN X-BUTTON! Need to thank god for Jim!!
Someone had to post this in this topic
Pff, you all have obviously NOT seen enough hentai to know what Japanese mean by HUGE tits. Those gals in DoA5? Nah, 'bout average hentai teens to be gangbanged by tentacled aliens. THIS is what they mean by BIG: And this is what they mean by HUGE. I feel kinda ashamed now and I don't even like huge tits. I prefer petite girls!
That is all the justification they need and the same reason people like Anita Sarkeesian will never effect video games. If they build it they will come.
I have two questions after watching this. A: Is that actually a small fleshlight on Fantasy Willem Dafoe's head? Also, as for those saying that it would've been bad PR if Team Ninja just outright said "Yeah we have huge boob fetish."
I don't even have to listen to your entire episode to realize that Jim is just jumping on the bandwagon where every video game should be based on super realism and if it isn't realistic it shouldn't be made anymore. Not to mention the fact that he doesn't really care about the developers if they actually want to developer the games they want them to be developed. I should also mention that Jim is taking the most shallow point of view here completely negating that the games they have developed as a company have always been from average to good games but instead just focuses on the breasts because it's the hot topic of the month and allows him to be in an ivory tower and throw stones. Yeah sure you can call the justification bullshit but have you ever thought about the marketing and research departments that are hired by Tecmo to do research on actual audiences to make sure that their game is actually well designed while sporting attractive characters that people are interested in playing? I should also mention that the DOA girls are always going to be compared to monsters because despite the fact that from game to game the actual breast size due to all the criticisms of the franchise from people who DO NOT BUY THE GAME have actually been successful at reducing the breast size of all the DOA women. If anything the tragedy here is that Jim and all those people who don't want characters like the DOA franchise or characters like this to exist no longer want developers to design games the way they want to but to just have everything be mundane and realistic as possible where if someone sees something that is out of proportion that as an individual whether they will buy the game or not they suddenly feel entitled to demand changes despite not having any sort of ownership or in a management position of Tecmo. The core of the issue is that are we going to really respect game developers and actually let them design games the way they want them and let them succeed or fail as a business be it if they actually demonstrate due diligence to research and market their games appropriately. Or, are we going to let individuals who have no stake in the success of failure of a company and the potential hundreds or thousands of people working day in day out to develop a product we want to our own personal specifications. I'm sorry but if we are really going to respect games as a form of media realize that not everything has to be gender neutral, or 100% customization because that takes away from any sort of specific narrative or story that the game wants to tell the player. Let developers develop the games they want them to be developed. EDIT: I should also mention that in the terms of eye candy department or when it comes to female characters standing out for the video game generations have actually gotten a lot smaller because of the religious right of video games.
You know what grinds my gears? When I read a manga, or watch an anime, and I see a girl, claiming to be15, or 13 or (God help us) 11, and they definitely do NOT look like they're that age! Even worse when the artist goes to certain lengths to get a good look at her "figure". If anyone who lives in Japan is reading this, could you work to, maybe, STOP this trend or something?
not as bad as basically saying 'were're Japanese, it's part of our culture; relax.'
Jim is just prejudiced against robosexuals. Hey Jim, just because it doesn't move like a fleshy sack of water it doesn't mean it's not fair game. Biological organisms are all crawling with bacteria anyway. Now what seems more creepy? Eh?
Good episode, and I'm glad you did it. I thought that response from team ninja was major BS.
It was fun to watch. As a person who's never really had any exposure to the Dead or Alive series because I'm not big on the fighting genre, about halfway through the video right before it was actually brought up I thought to myself "Wow, they're bouncing around like they have their own brains". Also, I like that you've started putting after-credits stingers. I don't know if it'll be a consistent thing, but it's enjoyable all the same. :D
HSOTD is a prime example of this. They are in High School, they should not have funbags that would look out of place in Playboy.
I'll agree that boobage is part of the DOA "culture", but it should come with an on/off switch. It wouldn't be that hard. Options > Gameplay > "Advanced Physics" (or something equally tame) > Toggle Switch. Voilą. Done. The pervs get their pervage, the guys more interesting in the fighting mechanics can go on being interested in the fighting mechanics without Lovecraftian mammaries hogging up the screen.
Also, the mention of "culture" just reminds me of how that guy harassed that poor girl playing Street Fighter x Tekken, and justified it by saying it's part of the fighting game culture. As Jim said "BUUUUUUUUULLSHIT!"
I wouldn't mind so much but they can't have seen that many tits if that's how they think they move. Those are like two water balloons given sentience and stapled to a dead eyed porcelain doll.
Its Dead or Alive, what were they gonna put in it instead of crazy digitits? Seems like the reaction people had over Duke Nukem:Forever all over again, its burlesque people, it is an art form.
I just can't get all that worked up about this. Fake boobs on fake women? From one developer? (Yes, I know there are certainly other devs that have ridiculously voluptuous characters and/or jiggle physics, but TN are the focus of this one, and for this subject, rightly so.) There are things in the medium that I get pissed off about, but a large part of that comes not just from companies behaving badly, but giving other companies the idea that the particular ways in which they're behaving are acceptable (and/or profitable), and soon the whole market is doing them and the customers are left without an alternative. There are things that market dynamics cannot fix, much as free market dogmatists might like to pretend otherwise. But Team Ninja making big boobs doesn't seem like one of them. If people don't like DoA games- if they find that particular element sufficiently off-putting that they reduce the amount of enjoyment they get out of those games, vs. other available alternatives- they'll stop buying and renting them. I'm also a little confused about what specifically Jim finds so offensive. This is not to say he doesn't have every right to be offended; that's his choice, of course. But I'm genuinely having trouble following if it's "real breasts don't behave like that" or "breasts are being focused on to the exclusion of all other elements that could be found sexy" or "gigantic breasts on teenagers is fetishizing women who are uncomfortably young to be the focus of that kind of attention" or "we're seeing all kinds of jiggle physics thrown at figures who otherwise look like dead-faced waxen dolls" or even "Would you kindly stop presuming that this kind of blatant pandering is what I, as a male gamer, am looking for out of my video games?" I think you could find good arguments for any of those, but the way this Jimquisition seems to kind of wander about in that regard makes it feel like a kind of rounded-off "it's squicky and gross to me, make it go awayyyyy" that's harder to intellectually defend. Oh, and for the record, the last DoA game I played was DoA 2, so I'd have to admit that part of my "meh" response comes down to not having a whole lot at stake one way or another.
TBH, I don't have an issue with DoA...Because I don't play the games, or really give a damn. They like big oversized boobs? Sure, have fun. It's not my thing. What I DO have team ninja for is participating in the atrocity that was Other M. *shakes fist*
I know a porn where Lisa Simpson ('lookalike') masturbates while Marge ('lookalike') gets fucked by the bee man... And yet Japan manages to produce shit that is more sleezy in a few frames than all the spoof-porn and exploitation movies I've watched.
Why do people care if the tits are not realistic? WHY? Magic isn't real either, let's throw that out of games. Werewolves aren't real either, let's get rid of those.
I think you are taking this a little personally. It's not about the breast size, it's about Team Ninja creating female characters that don't exist in the uncanny valley. The girls could be more appealing if they didn't remind me of cheap Sex Dolls. It's about Team Ninja blaming everyone else for people not liking the bad parts of their games, instead of them, who created the bad parts themselves. It's about Team Ninja not being culturally sensitive and trying to compete in the market and them being surprised at other cultures not agreeing with them. The point of the video is exposing the weak points of Team Ninja and they are welcome to take them and improve their products for a wider audience. In the end, everyone will win.
When I first saw this, I felt the need to take a crack at your sexual prowess. Then I realized that I had already lost that endeavor. Touche sir.
Jim, thanks for making me momentarily fall out with my girlfriend. Great video though.

It contains the phrase "Good lord your gigantic".
