Well Jim, thank you, you have made my day by making me laugh so much :D And boobs just don't work that way. It's so weird. They just do not work that way.
If people were really that opposed to it the games wouldn't sell. Yet they do. Simple economics dictate, and especially in times where both your industry is contracting and the market is plateauing, that you go where the money is. I think the bigger question is whether or not we can distinguish between unnatural fantasies and actual reality, because this is by no means the first time we've been presented with unrealistic representations of humans.
I've never played a DoA title and I will probably continue in that tradition, now that I have a hard-on for grand-strategy games... But I don't understand why all the laments about the big wobbly boobs in Japanese games. Seriously guys, Japan has been spewing some really crazy shit over the years. I use to love animes during the 90's and early 2000's but I can't look at the new ones anymore. I've had my fair share of hentai, I've never enjoyed it but I could understand people who did, I even saw a few as "artistic". But the new ones are just... wtf?! I don't like to stereotype japanese people as being perverted and crazy. But their perverted and crazy ones are more perverted and crazier than any other country has to offer. So excuse me if having big wobbly breasts in a fighting game doesn't seem the end of the world to me. At least they're honest about it. Plus, big breasts are what DoA is all about. If I were a fan, I'd be pretty pissed about normal breasts in DoA 4 too. I'm amazed at the nerve of us westerners. How dare we complain about sexualization in other cultures, when our TV shows contain more sex than a mild hentai? Big Bang Theory has 99% sex jokes and 1% geek jokes? How the heck did that happen?! Unrealistic polygon boobs are nothing compared to that.
I just wish people would say what it is, porn. I have no judgement over what people find kinky as its a fetish and you can't really help it. If people get off to DoA then fine just stop making excuses, I saw the film, if its anything like the games then its story is about as good as a porn so why not just treat it as such. I reeeeeeeeally wish that an all male patch would come out... although all the guys would look and act the same... thinking about it even by ecchi standards DoA's fairly pants, theres no variety... wheres the Korra's and the Marcelines, personality goes a long way Team Ninja.
There needs not be any "justification" for boobs, they're fucking boobs, why should they justify it to you, who exactly do you think you are? And why would they need an "excuse"? And yes, Japanese culture is different and they won't let western feminists trample them into changing their views on these subjects, if anything it has to come from within. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it.
I can not believe that I get a third thread to post this in, but here we go: Team Ninja should just go ahead and be completely open.
wtf tmi | |
Did you miss half the episode? A good chunk of Jim's point was the fact that they were trying to do everything but take responsibility for their own "style."
I think that's part of the "it's just our culture" argument, since Japan has a proud history of sexualising children.
I think it is fair to blame it on culture and the customers. The customers buy the games with the helium balloons so that is what is made. At the end of the day they still make the plastic ladies but without a demand there is not supply. As for the culture. Well not that I have seen hentai but whenever the women moves her nipples always trace a heart shape and come back to the center. Repeatedly and always to same path so it might as well be a short giff. So it does seem like a culture thing.
Gah! Now I see what all the fuss is about, and it is goddamn frightening. Don't get me wrong: I love boobs. Probably significantly more than my fellow man (like, even if that fellow man is on the internet). And those, my good sirs and ladies, are absolutely not boobs. Those are sentient malevolent water balloons. And yes they are on apparently underage girls. As a wiser person than myself once said, "Do not want."
You need to remember that Japanese women look... well... childish. My flute teacher was a 43 year old Japanese mother who looked like a 20 year old with D cups. Then it's all the school uniforms and the fact that most have smaller breasts than western 16 year olds. Yes, it's a culture, girls actually look like that. But they're used to it. It doesn't trigger pedophilia in them. It does in us tho... or at least it makes us afraid that it would do. If you're an 18 year old 200 pound american, used to seeing 6 foot girls everyday and you go to a japanese highschool, you're gonna have a very weird walk... And lolicon (lolita imagery) is quite old in Japan. The trick in protecting real children is to paint them as far removed from reality as possible. A G cup on a 9 year old is physically impossible. A japanese dude who reads that stuff will most likely find 18 year olds attractive rather than 9 year olds. Again, it works for them... might be a problem for us. So don't be too quick to judge their "culture".
I guess I wasn't paying attention to that point. Oh well, I guess that happens when I go to bed so late.
Where the eff do you people come from? "Take responsibility"? Responsibility for what, a design choice in a game appealing to a certain target audience? They didn't cause the holocaust, they didn't kill anyone and they didn't cause an uproar among thousands of people. They made a product that may not appeal to you, wtf do they need to take "responsibility" for? Does Nintendo need to take responsibility for using an Italian plumber as a video game character? RockStar for displaying the life of gansters in their games? RARE for talking animals in their videogames? Regarding the "culture" thing, it's apparently easy for people from the US (or generally the west) to fall back on that and call it "reprehensible" or whatever, but do they give a shit about what for instance Arabic or Indian people think when they produce entertainment products? Are they sensitive about Islamic people for instance not wanting to see the female form displayed in the way it is? This level of hypocrisy seriously pisses me off, and I didn't even buy a single DoA game since I don't own a console.
I never understood the "children" part of the insults to DoA. Apparently people don't realize the youngest female character in the game is 16 (Ayane), which is perfectly acceptable (and legal) in Japan. Thats not a child.
ATTENTION TEAM NINJA! BOOBS ARE THEIR OWN JUSTIFICATION! That is all, thank you for your time.
I just wish these developers would realize there are other fetishes than just huge tits and young-looking women. Do you have any idea how excited I was when Juri was announced for SSFIV? And Ibuki and Makoto? and Elena and Christie in SFxT, as well as Asuka's alt costume? Do you see the common thread there?
It was hilarious, but I just don't get your argument. Whats the difference between people getting off to those other things but not to the DoA girls with their sentient breasts? I understand the parts about Team Ninja casting the blame on other people, totally agree on that part, but the sex issue, I'm having trouble coming up with a real difference.
Applying a number to a character does not automatically make them that age in the eyes of the viewer. Our perception of age is based upon appearance, and if all the characters appear younger than they actually are, and are being shown off in a sexual way. It's just a bit odd really. Not directly saying "They're kids", but, I'm just telling you how people could see it that way.
Maybe you wouldn't be pissed off if you weren't put words into his mouth, then thinking he said them. "They didn't cause the holocaust, they didn't kill anyone and they didn't cause an uproar among thousands of people." Who the hell said they did? Why the hell did you bring this up? What point could you have possibly been making that you would need this type of comparison? The point that they do need to take responsibility for is they need to look at faults in the game, and admit that it was their fault, not the audience's fault that it's there. I imagine films made in the US that would be offensive in other countries are simply not shown in other countries, or they are altered. Then you are bringing up the story of the other film, WHY are you blaming the person who made the video and not the murderers? WHY are you lumping people in this comments section in with that trailer? It is not hypocrisy to demand a change to something if you are the market and they are trying to get you to buy their product, NOBODY before you brought up that trailer, it would only be hypocrisy if they defend that trailer, and then agree with Jim.
Silly Jim! That isn't a Fleshlight! ... ... WAIT, NO!
So how much of your budget is for sex toys these days, Jim?
No kidding. For me, the breaking point was Seikon no Qwaser, where the heroes get the power to manipulate the chemical elements at will by drinking magic breast milk. Straight from the tap. Guys, you know, you can just make porn if you want to. Nobody's going to stop you. But you can't expect to structure your narrative around drinking magic breast milk and expect us to take you seriously. Not gonna happen.
Urgh. Jim is looking for something to complain about, and this wasn't worth the time. There was very little to it apart from shouting his own disgust. You can say the Japanese should not act according to their culture, they should act according to a western progressive culture, but it is just an attempt to browbeat difference to force it to accord with your values. I didn't think you would be akin to a western imperialist Jim, but when people are offended such ideas of controlling the deviant really come out. They have a place they are coming from, accept it and move on. Suck it up, it is Japan, they do this a lot in their pop culture. If we forced them to change, we would be pushing more towards sameness wouldn't we?
Yay! False dichotomy for the win! Seriously? You have children take responsibility for things they do, but it's okay for Team Ninja to pretend it's everyone else's fault because they didn't "cause the holocaust?"
Yep. And the white haired assassin woman is certainly not a child character.
americans will have to stop first have you watched an america movie/comic book/ video game attractive and white
I freaking love that show. The creator obviously gives 0 fucks about anything.
Saying that they "need to take responsibility" for something implies that they did something wrong, which they didn't. Their audience seems quite happy with their games and doesn't seem to regard it as a fault. I am not sure what fault you want them to admit to? Maybe the "fault" is with the audience of people not buying the game, but demanding it to change so it caters to them or doesn't "offend" them?
You would imagine wrong, you are also on the Internet, which people have access to worldwide (well, mostly).
Well, gee, thanks for (somewhat, cursory) getting my point. Why are people blaming Team Ninja exactly and what for? Were there great boob-outrage riots somewhere that I missed? And how does the "culture defense" not apply for them (yes, Japanese culture is different from American/European one), but whenever the US does something which pisses off an entire culture and a lot of people are taking a lot more serious it does? (Example: YOU and the first sentence you said)
Take responsibility for WHAT? Offending a few thousand people, who wouldn't buy their game anyway? Is that against the law? Making a product/franchise that sells well to millions and spans over 11 titles? What exactly did they do wrong that they need to "take responsibility" for? That's exactly what I'm asking.
...What holocaust? DoA5 WILL sell well. The fake breast physics aren't going to stop, or even hinder the sales. The game will ultimately be judged on it's fighting mechanics, the criticism of fake/unrealistic boobs will be tossed aside. Jim, and other people in this thread - you can get mad, angry and rage at the teens with monster-fake tits that jiggle unrealistically. You can throw all your rage in Team Ninja. Have fun.
I believe Itagaki himself said something akin to that in an interview several years back. Don't quote me on that however; lemme see if I can find the interview featured on DoA2U... Here we go. I'm pretty sure this is the one. OT: Yet another reason why many, myself included, laud DoA3 as the best in the series. Speaking purely about the breast physics, sure, while the sizes and shapes themselves were a little exaggerated, the actual movements were subtle and somewhat natural (I guess... it's been a while). Either way, the breasts didn't move like a pair of water balloons on a see-saw like in some of the more recent DoA games. At least things haven't gotten as ridiculous as some of the lady-type characters in the Soul Calibur series, with Sophitia being the worst offender... Addendum: Don't get me wrong, I love DoA; it's my favorite 3D fighter series next to Soul Calibur. And don't get me wrong further, I love breasts as much as the next guy (or gal); hell, Queen's Blade is one of my favorite anime (Elina and Tomoe all day). But having breasts that jiggle like a bowl of gelatin during an earthquake is a little unnerving. Addendum addendum: I mean... just a little.
Manga, original anime or Ultimate, just to know if you mean crazy or Nazi hiding on the dark side of a Giant Star Turtle crazy ?
You're totally free to criticize these games and what they represent, While personally I'm not a fan of fighting games, I do enjoy over-the-top CG characters and scenarios. Much of the purpose of entertainment (in all forms) is to take us away from the world we inhabit, showing us glimpses of far-fetched ideas. Lastly, we should probably judge our own culture before shitting on others, the west has plenty of 'issues' to work through after all.
It would't be such a issue if they themselves weren't so pushing it. I knew everything what I needed to know of Team Ninja when they essentially said that there 'big feature' was the jiggle physics of the breasts of female character. The commercial that was showed in video really shows how they see it, or how at least the publisher sees it. "We have huge tits with physics on this 14 year old girl, isn't that hot?" No, it isn't and you certainly can't pull the 'cultural' card here. The game is also (and maybe even mainly) created for a western audience, so you are not supplying your own 'culture'.

This is rather tasteless advertising to an almost pediphile degree, because those people look like 12-14 year old kids/teenagers.
If that's someones fetish, doesn't that belong in an adult sex game ? Perhaps it's just too close to real people in some regards while pushing forward ridiculous cartoon breast fetishes.
I do find this combination of "look at those fuckable teenagers" with cartoonishly fake breasts creepy.
Good one Jim. Nasty subject with a few good laughs makes it easier to talk about it.
