One or two episodes more about this confusing superpowerboobgirl...
I'm sort of having trouble following the lines already :P

It's funny that while I was reading comics for years and somehow my brain absorbed this stuff pretty easily during that time, but once I stopped and then try to figure out what happened since then my brain now goes "OW OW NO MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP!!!"

:p

Sigh...... i don't know i kind of expected Bob to explain more about power girl, how many different versions of power girl there had been but it's ok i guess.

Yes the new 52 PG it's not the same PG we love, and it's not only because the costume which is horrible.... but the personality and the background changed to much , same happened to huntress, George Perez is killing PG........ i loved the Conner/Gray/Palmiotti Power Girl, she was funny and interesting, and even if it was to serious i still enjoyed the Winick/Prasetya, i think they should retire George Perez xD i also hated his art style in the new 52 Super Man. ohhh by the way...

Funniest thing about boob window?

I've seen a real one. Recently I've seen a woman wearing a turtleneck sweater with a boob window. A fellow worker claims a friend of hers has it. Think she said Old Navy was selling them, but could be wrong there...

We could make these comic book storyline into a drinking game.

Every time they reboot the thing - drink.
They kill someone - drink.
They bring them back to life - drink.

Lets think up more.

Tanis:
The new PG is kind of...annoying.

I miss the PG of V2 where she not only kicked some MAJOR ass, she also founded a company and used her connections to make the world a better place though SCIENCE.

That acknowledgement that 'my fists can't solve everything' is something you RARELY see out of most of these 'demigods'.

I agree. I'm currently developing a self published superhero piece and the main character has super strength and I did want her to be someone who could solve a lot of her problems with her fists but doesn't try to solve all of them like that.

She's mal-proportioned? In comparison to what? The walking meat walls that are every DC male character?

People always bring up the poorly proportioned women, no one ever says "look at Superman, how can he even move with those dustbin lids on his chest?"

But yea, the boob window is retarded.

>_>

<_<

They should just hand the character over to Lauren Faust already!

*Flees*

Ah, boobs. The best advertising technique to teenagers. Anyways, comics are incredibly weird.

No need to flee, many are fans of her work here, and really, I see no way that could end poorly actually.

Ah, CallMePo, that guy does good Power Girl work. I agree they should never have let the Conner/Gray/Palmiotti power trio be taken off the Power Girl run, because it was all things a superhero comic should be: fun, action packed, colorful and filled with interesting characters.

The best thing about Conner's art, is that woman knows faces. (All pics in spoilers cos they're big)

A fine example of the 'oh crap' face.

I'm not sure what to call the faces in here other than funny, but I like it because I hate The Big Bang Theory

Power Girl is annoyed and Satanna is smug, great expressions and a good payoff on the next page.

And this is the page that forever cemented Power Girl as awesome. Great expressions all around too

I've also not forgiven DC for seemingly axing the new Terra (Atlee) without explanation because the pair of them were a great double act.

I vaguely remember seeing somewhere that at one point the artist of the Power Girl comic decided to make her breasts slightly larger each issue to see how far he could go before being stopped by the editor or getting called out on it.

@Gordon_4

Oh i forgot about Terra!!, she was cool, they made a funny pair..... yup i liked more this PG but the 2 vol PG was ok, more serious but ok, I'm just hoping someone fixes the damages, and i forgot Mr terrific... yeah that's not working out.

For as much as I like the show up front, the thing that stands out the most for me is the side cape. That is a sharp, sharp look.

Yeah anyways, the short blonde hair doesn't hurt either.

Scarim Coral:
I read that the current reboot of Power Girl no longer got the boob window but to compensate, her costume get torn/ ripped apart as a running gag which some fans hated.

Looking forward to next week since I think I know which Supergirl you're going to mention next.
.

So she turned into Empowered...

Thats cool. I can live with Empowered. THat was pretty cool.

Caramel Frappe:

I respect it when characters are fleshed out and they're seen as people, not "ooohhh yeah I want me some of that" kind of models. Thanks for having this shown to us Movie Bob, I will check in next time to see what's going to happen. If I ever got into the DC comics business, I want to make a female character who was remembered for her talents and personality, not 'the boob windows are flashing'.

Batwoman would like to have a word with you.

I think it'd be great to see Power Girl in the forthcoming Justice League movie.

Think about it.......

Hear that, authors? EVERYONE CAN LOOK UP PORN ANYTIME THEY WANT NOW! YOU CAN STOP DRAWING THAT SHIT!.

And if all you wanted was plot you could look up the Gutenberg website and download over 40,000 free ebooks.

Off you go, and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

My body was so ready :)

yeah...speaking of which I was in the comic shop today and I heard the head of Vertigo quit...and speculation the imprint might go under...

that said I've read plently of non-super hero comics (in fact its annoying I have to specify "non superhero" comics) like Saga and Locke and key

I honestly think the comicbook industry needs to get over its superhero thing (that'll happen when you have a female superhero wearing an unflattering outfit)

Icehearted:
"Ridiculous proportions"... my ex girlfriend was built like her, she never looked ridiculous, or even Dolly Parton-esque. Let's be honest, everybody loves breasts, whether they're attached to us or to other people, we're all pretty much fans, so i don't get the issue. If they sell comic book let's call it harmless eye candy. If there are issues of objectification I can assure you that most women do it to themselves to a greater degree than men could possibly achieve via comic book artistry.

Power girl aside still no excuse for objectification in general (its more of a chicken/egg thing)

reading about all of this is definetly off putting...just another one of the many things that make comics seem off putting

^This. This EXACTLY. Powergirl, even when being serious, was fun. Now it's just sort of 'meh'.

Empowered is great, but "Empowered Girl" would be a bit odd in the mainstream DC universe. Even more so if they brought The Goddamn Maidman along with her. Poor Batman fans would never recover. I would totally read that though. It sounds like it could be the DC equivalent of Nextwave. Heh.

Dude, what is wrong with you?
I clearly stated that I enjoyed Vertigo. Vertigo is a comic. Comics have images, and not just "plot". However, Vertigo RARELY have the skimpy, softcore-porn outfits and images that I see in modern comics. That was my point. When I want good comics, I read Vertigo. When want porn, I look at porn. I don't see the point with doing the middleground.

Ugh. That would indeed be a dark day. Still, I doubt it will be the end of Vertigo-style comics. Hellblazer and Fables still have a good, stable readerbase, and Gaiman is writing the long-awaited prequel to Sandman.
That, if anything, will keep the brand alive.

I read Batman up until the reboot (which I still consider a big FU), but I never knew Supergirl & Power Girl were the same person.

So all comics outside of Vertigo are essentially softcore porn? Go look up some comics from publishers like Image or Top Shelf.

It's my perception of them, yes. Of course not *all* of them are. Of course there are other imprints which handle comics in a manner that I can handle. But mainstream DC and Marvel? No.
The topic is about Powergirl, and my complaints are with standard Superhero-comics. I'm sorry, I should have expressed myself clearer.
But really, any form of comic that feels the need to draw T&A or power-fantasy muscles on ANY character without the plot meriting it or it works in the favor of said characters development or unique feel towards said character (which it never does, since most female heroes seem to look like clones body-wise, and males aren't much better) can just stop it, as far as I am concerned.
It's the same with sex-scenes in all media; If it doesn't provide anything other than latent fap-material, cut it the fuck out.

Edit: And yes, I do realize that some people, maybe even the majority, enjoys this fap-matrial. So why should it be taken away?
Well, maybe it shouldn't. Maybe we should "give people what they want". Just don't expect said comics to be taken very seriously at the same time. And if that isn't an issue, then hey, go for it. I'm just speaking of personal preference here. Some people enjoy soft-core porn in their newspapers too, for instance (a depressingly large amount do).

Aureliano:
To be a bit facetious, I'm not sure I understand the problem. I like boobs, Powergirl has enough to feed a regiment and she has her own comic for people to read/ogle.

But there's nothing in the rulebooks that says DC can't also publish 'The Sensible Adventures of a Modestly Dressed Woman of Average Proportions With a Respectable Day Job That She Completely Deserves Who Never Gets Married or Kidnapped or Asks a Man for Help Unless She Later Helps Him Out in Return and Has a Discreet Sex Life That Either Definitely Includes Women or Totally Doesn't Because That's Just Fanservice, Boys, Grow Up, and She Has a Healthy Relationship With Her Father Because Daddy Issues Are Over. Also She May or May Not Have Superpowers But Either Way She Did It on Her Own.' Granted I wouldn't read that comic because it sounds terrible, but maybe there's an audience out there for that one.

Well, barring the first two, Power Girl kind of was that character.

And then they rebooted her and oh boy did it all go to shit. (Not quite as bad as Starfire, but the only difference really is that the writers looked at the reaction to her new character and thought "hmm, the reason people don't like out new shallow fanservice character is that she doesn't quip enough about how much of a shallow fanservice character she is", so whereas old Power Girl was a scientist and entrepreneur, who managed to run a successful business as well as punch bad guys, new Power Girl just sleeps with people who has things she want until she's learned enough to steal them.

Progress!

SonOfVoorhees:
The thing is males can appreciate a strong female character without the need for a skimpy outfit. In comics, as long as she kicks ass most guys are impressed, then all you need is good story and it will be a seller. Way to many perceived stereotypes in comics now both for males and female characters. Thing is, with the internet, if a guy wants boobs then all he has to do is go online, we dont need comics for that now. Add a bit of reality, give them a proper costume for the work they are doing. I really dont think that adding a boob window will sell a characters comic, thats just retarded.

Except its not just the readers, its the creators too.

Atop the fourth walls review of the first two issues of all-star batman and robin shows Frank Millers notes where he goes into leering detail about how Vicky Vale's lingerie clad ass was to be portrayed. Or the time the neice of Steel was written as being in full protective gear when welding, but the artist put her in a low-cut top cause he wanted to show off her boobs, which totally undermined the character when she was burned due to an accident.

Talking of artists agendas, there was a part of one comic where Power Girl was talking to another female character about her costume, and was taken aback by compliments by the other character on the design. This was written as a sweet, character building moment between the two, but the artist made it a fourth wall breaking 'f*** you' to female readers who complained about the costume.

For those wondering why this iconic picture is so iconic it is because of an icon. The most recognisable to western christian society: http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Datei:Michelangelo%27s_Pieta_5450_cut_out_black.jpg&filetimestamp=20080306023941

I never understood the infintie Earth / Earth 2 / weirdo stuff... but Bob just made it so much easier to understand.

And I still think DC screwed up. Why they have to put all these heroes into one world together is just a lazy way of selling the fan of one hero lots of different comic series... personally it just encourages em not to read them because I don't want to read lots of different series.

And Powergirl the 2009 version was the only good series with her. She was neither too rough, nor too girly... she was just a working class woman.

Oh, well... thats great. The shorts shes done for the three Super Best Friends Forever have been awesome. They could possibly get a whole new geneeration of young girls (and boys) into western super hero's.

Granted Power Girl is a seperate story but, you know, maybe just let that one be concidering how much of a fan favourite she is.

I am also okay with this... a guest appearance from the Caged Demonwolf would not go a miss!

I still remember Green Lantern asking PG "why don't you wear a mask?" and PG replying "Because nobody looks at my face ;)".

Some at DC have suggested that the "boob window" IS her logo; that her cleave IS her iconic representation, like a bat , lantern or lightning bolt.
