Well, it's easy to see which part he had the most fun writing... it certainly was the most fun part to listen to. Mario = Superman. Yes.

Also, good job explaining a big reason why I prefer Marvel over DC in less than a minute.

Also, regarding the SWEU: assuming no movies come out before the prequels, what happens to the books set then? Are they considered part of the canon or is the EU an all-or-nothing affair?

How could anyone think they would use any of the EU? The little I know makes it out to be an incoherent clusterfuck.

Also will their ever be a Big Picture on the New 52 as I know very little about it and really want to know why Bob seems to hate it.

I never once expected them to pick up the EU. Lucasarts never did, why would Disney. It's not as if the legwork is already done for them and they would just have to throw their infinite supply of money at it until they worked out a script with only a fraction of the effort. That would just be insane.

That whole Mario thing should be next weeks episode. :3

Haha, loved it. When you think about it, Super Mario Bros. continuity is a heck of a lot more interesting than Zelda continuity.

I want a whole episode of Bob explain the internal continuity, culture, denizens etc. of all the Mario games as seriously as a real anthropologist (exopologist?).

Just sayin'.

Anyway, I agree with the assumption that Disney is going to do their own thing with Star Wars. The books were written from a stand point that they were glorified fan-fiction, meaning that all kinds of crazy (i.e. not focused grouped) things could happen.

If George Lucas' words are to be believed/followed, nothing outside the movies is direct canon.

As much as I like some of the EU, there was never any reason to think it would be used for the movies.

And I would say something about the DC's New 52 and how there are really good titles on it, but most of those good titles (like Batman and all the Green Lanterns) largely ignore the continuity reset anyways.

well your wrong... sorta
because of the different publishers and writers some stories are inspired but don't take place in the sane story world or some stories take place at round about the same time without knowing what came before what.
To be honest the SW:EU with the best continuity are the DarkHorse stuff.

Talk more about Mario continuity! Talk about the bullshit that was Miyamoto saying the Koopalings aren't really Bowser's children!

I'm Bob, and I'm a Nintendo fanboy

You know, I don't really care much for the storylines in the extended universe, but I wouldn't have minded A Mara Jade.

So I'm NOT the only one who noticed the lack of Shy Guys in SMW when they were in Yoshi's Island!

The EU is a lot like a lot of other geek media. Some of it's good (The Thrawn Trilogy) and some of it's bad (The New Rebellion). Since the good books are generally so praised by fans, like the Thrawn Trilogy, I imagine that's where a lot of the demand to make them into movies comes from. "Look, look, we all love this! Make it into a movie and regain our trust and adoration!" I never believed that they would make The Truce at Bakura into a movie nor that it was a story that needed to be (re)told.

What I'd like to see is the new movies* do something similar to the Rogue Squadron books. Focus on new characters, mention some of the other stars (Luke and co.) in passing, and tell a good story. It's a huge universe with plenty of opportunities for characters, stories and so much more! If you wheel in someone from the original trilogy constantly all it does is shrink the universe. And please stop portraying the Empire as this group of bumbling idiots that can be taken down by some college kids.

*I'd also like to see the Endor Holocaust because screw you George!

I think Bob has put more thought into the Mario Bros. continuity than most of the people who work at Nintendo, and I'm honestly not certain if I'm more amused or impressed.

I've never been the biggest Star Wars geek. Oh, I like the movies well enough, at least the original trilogy. I grew up mostly in the eighties; what kid didn't want to be a Jedi at some point? And I also quite enjoyed the original Bioware Knights of the Old Republic. But most of what I've read of and about the "extended universe" is just... How do I put this? At best, it was "more of the same"- you thought bounty hunters were cool? Here's another one. You thought smugglers were cool? Here. Jedi? Yeah, we gots yo' Jedi. At worst, it screwed up what was most effective about the original trilogy, Midichlorian-style. "Grey Jedi"...? Either diluting the pool or polluting it.

I'm sure if I searched hard enough, I'd find some continuity that I felt an iron-clad need to defend. In the case of the "Extended Universe", though, it's genuinely hard for me to understand why someone would feel a need to get bitter about something with a quality that the kindest person would describe as "uneven".

Wow...
Bob really geeked out over the Mario Canon...
Can't tell if thats kinda sad

Or kinda freaking cute...

The Super Mario tangent was fantastic.

I like to think of LotR or Harry Potter as examples of depth in a universe. It just feels like there is so much more going on in the world than just the events that are taking place within the window of the world that we are watching. Star Wars, yes, Star Trek, definitely (all those tv series added up).

Bonus of this approach... They might get rid of the Vong in their new stories!

Normally I get very passionate about continuity, but since I've never really thought of the EU as canon, and I'm determined not to watch any of the new movies anyways; I don't really care that much this time. When the movie's come out I'll be retreating into my happy place where I will pretend nothing is happening and punch every person who tries to tell me what happens in the face.

I think MovieBob blew my mind with the Mario rant.

IT MAKES SENSE!!!

HUZZAH!!!

If it means losing Thrawn I will GLADLY make THAT trade!

I thought the Clone Wars cartoon was writing over a lot of EU canon anyway. And it's not like this is the first time this has happened. The prequels undid a lot of EU material that existed up to that point.

If you read through the extensive discussion of canon on Wookiepedia, it's clear that through the whole history of the franchise, whatever happened in the live-action films is canon, and any other media is generally accepted as canon until Lucasfilm decides it isn't.

Lucasfilm has the right to mine whatever ideas they like from EU canon, and they probably will use a couple. But adopt that byzantine web wholesale? Not likely.

Bob, could the next big picture just be your take on the mario continuity? That was entertaining as hell to listen to.

Agreed. At first I was a little unsure about tossing out existing novel continuity, but the more I think about it the more I like it!

I can understand and accept Disney taking the extended universe and taking a massive "non-canon" stamp to it: there's just way too much baggage to have to deal with and there's no way in Hell you're going to appease everybody if you try making it all work. That being said though, I really don't want Knights of the Old Republic and the Darth Bane book trilogy to be non-canon. KotOR I can understand but Darth Bane has a tangible link to Darth Sidious by virtue of instituting The Rule of Two.

Welcome to The Escapist! Don't mind Uncle Bob...he gets really passionate about Super Mario Bros.

Great video!

And... having seen your divergence into the continuity of Super Mario... can we have an episode on that? That was actually really interesting. A whole episode on your take on the Mushroom Kingdom and related items would be really, really interesting to watch.

So consider this one request for a Super Mario Brothers focused episode.

Wait... Mario has a story? I mean I know I never played far enough into a game too get too a cut scene before just going "Well, I'm bored" and turning it off." You can not convince me there is a coherent story in there somewhere.

I'm sorry, Bob. I'm not interested in buying your Mario fan-fic. ;)

To that effect I know the feel. I watched the doctor who (1996) movie yesterday. I have not accepted it as cannon dispite the fact that the reboot has. The doctor is not half human, despite all the things you can claim to make that make sense I refuse to believe it. There was no 8th doctor. The 7nth doctor regenerated in the time war, then regenerated again during the same war they just used paul McGann too keep so they could show 10 doctors in the eleventh hour. I refuse to believe other wise. No!!! *gasp, and begins panting*

*curls up in the corner and begins crying* why did they have too make him half human in a shitty tv movie where he could have just as easily been a timelord and it would have made just as much sense. I.E. None.

I can't even look at the reboot the same way anymore...

I dearly love how you undercut your own (perfectly valid) arguments with that last 20 seconds - and I'm not being snarky. Not only was it hilarious, but it mirrors how most such discussions go. "Oh, you're just a Star Wars geek. None of that stuff is real and nobody cares. What? No, JANEWAY was the best captain EVER..." and so on.

Well done.

We need an episode about Mario's continuity ASAP. It will be glorious.

Also: Disney could VERY easily shoot itself in the foot and/or retcon stuff (un)intentionally with these backstory films.

Huh...I actually agree with the brothers being from Brooklyn as well, Bob. Of course...I also think it was actually A Mario and not THE Mario who actually rescued Daisy in the events of Super Mario Land. How else would you explain why Daisy and the green guy seem to be a pairing? (Think about THAT one for a moment...)

Still...the point that we shouldn't be all that worried about canon makes sense. As a fanfiction writer, one of the tenets I stick to is the idea that fanfiction is NEVER canon...even if it keeps characters, settings, etc. well within how they are within the core series made by the guys who actually own the IP. Might help in regards to the upcoming Star Wars trilogy if we disregard the extended universe until we see what Abrams comes up with. Who knows? The story might actually be good as long as we aren't blinded by the lensflare.

Ha, the whole part dugging deep into Mario contiunity make me want to see a John Carter/ Warlord of Mars version of Mario fanart!
So you're saying if the new Star Wars is good, we gonna get new Star Wars material (the part when you show the Avengers film and we got the new 52)?

Ok,
as a long time fan of EU books (The Truce at Bakura is in my top 5 books I re-read to death pile) I agree that some of it can, at times be silly (an ex-imperial admeral becoming leader of the GA, c'mon, really?!), at times, undermine its own mythology (are jedi telephathic or not, make up your mind EU writers!) and often just gets to complex for its own good (One day I will understand the Legacy of the Force series' plot). BUT! Sometimes it just tells really excellent stories staring characters that you can get really invested in.
Is it rediculous that I hold Han and Leia's marriage as an example of how to do it right? Actually no, because a group of writers over the years have poured their own interpritation of what Han and Leia's relationship is all about creating this wonderful narrative. That's good characterisation, even if it's got 'Star Wars' on the cover.
Will I be sad that teenage Ben Skywalker, adult Jaina Solo and Master Saba Sabatyne won't show up in the new films, yes, because I love those characters but it doesn't stop them existing!
As an aside, the Fate of the Jedi series is Star Wars at its best, it manages to strip away most of the over-complex plotting, get back to the characters and use a glaxay far, far away to explore ideas of selfishness vs. selflessness, good vs. evil, moral relativeism, farther/son relationships and everything inbetween. Sure, it's EU but I dare anyone to tell me that its not well-written and isn't fun. Afterall, Twilight is badly written and people love that story.

With any luck someone's going into this new project with an idea to explore or a story to tell other than just 'let's make another Star Wars film' because that's when things are rubbish.

What I don't want to see is disney feeling like they have to throw us a bone and just bring in a character for the sake of fan service, that would be stupid. (On a serious note, is this thing going to be live-action?)
