Raiden also rhymes with Hayden Christensen, who played the role of a penis in the Star Wars prequels.

No, they don't rhyme actually.

Fine. Raiden sounds a lot like Hayden. Better?

Actually no. Raiden is pronounced rye-den. Hayden is pronounced hey-den. They don't rhyme at all.

Well, I have not played MGR yet, but I will say that I liked MGS4 quite a bit though. Did MGS4 have cutscenes that were way too long? Yes, absolutely. Could anyone accuse MGS4 of being a thoughtless game? No, not at all.

And that is the real problem with the industry, not the differences of aesthetics when people are inspired by film and other mediums when they make games. Not when people like Yahtzee lobby that game should be their own medium and sever themselves from film. But, when game are completely thoughtless.

If the difference of aesthetics between Yahtzee and Kojima were all that affected the industry, it would be a much better industry. Instead, we get thoughtless sequels spit out like Call of Duty, and mediocre tie-ins that no one was inspired to make like Aliens: Colonial Marines.

I expected the dick joke that has been in every Metal Gear game review ever. Was not disappointed.

I really don't care to argue rhymes with you, so I'll just direct you here.

And I even gave in to calling it not-a-rhyme. Geez, lighten up chief.

Daystar Clarion:
I actually completed it today.

One of the bet final boss fights ever :D

I think the trick is to go into the game expecting it not to take itself too seriously, like a cheesy 80's action movie.

I loved it.

You fight ALL the negative 'mericah stereotypes (obesity aside) included in one human being. How could you NOT like it?
I personally not only did like "the boss" as a boss, but also as a character. Yes, stereotypical, yes bat-sh1t insane, but still so... Rad...

And the game itself was fun. You hack, you slash, you parry, you do cool stuff. As long as you like Platinum games' products, you'll like this.

And parry is not so hard: push the stick towards the attacking enemy and press light attack. Yahtzee is probably getting old and should stick to visual novels and point-n-click adventure games, so that his grandpa fingers won't crumble to dust.

Inbefore crazy Yahtzovah witnessess response: that was a joke.

The game is made by Platinum ... but Kojima's team made the story-not Kojima himself. Hideo Kojima wanted to make a story about cyborg ninja but but his team wanted to do Raiden..so he just let them do what they wanted

Basically don't use this game to look for insights into Kojima's head

its funny my last favorite game from this universe was the first one with raiden

Okay Yahtzee, I get that some, including you may have a problem with Kojima's storytelling, but he didn't make the story this time around! Sure you can say that he didn't know about the iffy development process but when you start up the game it says "DEVELOPED BY PLATINUM GAMES"!!! I was wondering if this would happen, I would've loved to hear him comment on Platinum Games making the game.

Although I do agree with many others that the end was very over the top, but honestly since the main villain was pretty much introduced then and there (yeah you saw him a bit earlier but still) so they had to make him memorable somehow. I won't remember MGR for being particularly smart or anything like that, but I will sure as hell remember it, final boss Dragonball Z-style, fun, just what this spin-off needed, eh?

I agree with most of the things Yahtzee says but dammit the j-rock was the best part of the game!

One complaint i have about the game though is that the combat is kind of shit when not using blade mode 24/7, i wish the actual combos were a bit more inspired.

Yeah, I loved the last boss, too. In what other game go you get to fight a

One thing I liked in particular about the fight was how it's testing all the core abilities - you have to block, slice with precision, evade, it's all there.

Quick, someone tell him Revengeance is actually in the dictionary. That will show him...
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/revengeance
http://www.webster-dictionary.net/definition/Revengeance

Boy is the egg on his face now, huh, huh, nudge nudge.

Apparantly it exists in American, but not in british English. I can't find it in any version of the Oxford Dictionary ;).

American words aren't real. I mean, who would write honour without a u?

OT: Not too interested in this game. I will have to say I laughed a lot at the end joke of this episode. Man, I can't believe how childish I am.

"AND THEN HE FOUGHT THE DINOSAURS" is a very appealing character arc to me, I can't lie.

So, did he not know Platinum Games did most of it?

Oh, and I have to offer DmC an apology. I got on its back for its excessive swearing, but Rising did the same thing.

And here was me thinking the soundtrack was actually pretty kick-ass. Been listening to the boss music on and off since i got the game, especially Mistral's theme (Stranger I Remain).

I suppose it's true about the tone of the ending 'cause it felt pretty damn disjointed from the rest of the game.
As for the gameplay it is indeed true that it seems to've been programmed on opposite day 'cause the combat is fun and the controls really aren't suited for much stealthing at all. If you don't find the cardboard box and try to do stealth you're pretty much fucked 'cause Raiden can't crawl around in local vegetation with an american flag on his face.

Thankfully the good bits where good enough that i just ignored that bad ones and had a blast with the game. If you don't find at least something awesome about running over missiles fired from a helicopter so you get over to it and slice it into a million pieces you probably shouldn't play hack 'n slash games in the first place.

And sadly, the chick with her top open is the best character to have call you, because at least you can look at her rack while she blathers on about nothing. If only they'd stuck a pair of nice tits on that awful robo-dog. >_<

Vivi22:

Posts phonetic spellings that proves they do rhyme, but continues to claim that they don't rhyme.

Posts link proving that they do rhyme, but gives in to Vivi's incorrectness and agrees that they don't rhyme.

Boo. Wish he'd stood his ground so we could have had a story that wasn't quite so poo. Maybe he could have stuck with that original concept of freeing Sunny from the Patriots, or just plain done something better than "everything you did in Metal Gear Solid 4 might as well have been for nothing because everything is the same minus the Patriots lol". Honestly, who the hell ever asked for a sequel to Metal Gear Solid 4 in the first place?

I think the title is a reference to the old saying - "revengeance is a dish best served multiple times".

I used to love Biker Mice from Mars, so I'd be nostalgic yet really annoyed.

I was waiting for this! I couldn't tell if yahtzee disliked MGR:Revengeance, but this review just makes me want to play it more! The crazy tone of the story of the whole series is kind of its hallmark anyway. Plus, it's only game I know that has commercials on TV that show ACTUAL GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE (yeah, I'm calling you out, latest God of War and every Final Fantasy game since VI)!

Daystar Clarion:

That's the right attitude! It's a refeshing change of style over games that try to be super serious and deep while still having the crazy, over-the-top violence be the core of the gameplay.

I recall hearing that Hideo Kojima purposefully made every Metal Gear game after Metal Gear Solid bad because he was continuously pestered into doing more games in the franchise.

It's worth noting that Kojima actually had very little to say in terms of the story of this game. He admitted sometime on Twitter that most of the game is Platinum Games's doing (and, well, if you want an idea of why this game just takes the craziness to the maximum level, look at literally any of their previous titles). He oversaw the project, but the dialogue and everything else is penned by someone at Platinum trying to emulate Kojima's style while throwing in a healthy dose of that Platinum Games trademark batshit.

That said, the game is canon, and I don't really understand how anyone could do anything but laugh hysterically during the final boss's cutscenes and fights.

EDIT: Wow I was beaten on this a while ago. My bad.

Good, another game that never tickled my fancy was hack'n'slashed into oblivion by the unsung hero of the internets (yes, Yahtzee) ...

Yahtzee's unsung? I think you'll find he's very well sung.

But Snake Eater is a modern classic so that can't be true!

I'm disappointed he didn't make another reference to sequels whose subtitles' are words beginning 're.'

I'm gonna say something stupid, but isn't Raiden suppose to be a parody on gamers since the beginning?

He was a whiny guy (just like some players) and then turned into a grim dark tries too hard to be cool guy(what marketers think people want)

Could be giving too much credit to Kojima

Metal Gear is getting closer to being summed up as Grey Japanese Jumpy Anime.

Man I loved buffed Ron Paul. What a great villain.

excalipoor:

And since he really cocked up that performance, I guess we haven't left the penis jokes.

Today Yahtzee puts Metal Gear Rising: Revengence on the chopping block.

I will admit the games tone is schizophrenic, however as someone who is able to take the other MGS games seriously I thought that the schizophrenic tone was very appropriate for MGR given how over the top the game is.

And as for the final boss...FUCKING LOVED IT!!! The guy is so insanely over the top but damnit it's awesome. I'm actually surprised Yahtzee didn't like it since the guy is pretty much the embodiment of every negative American stereotype.

I agree that the game does a poor job of explaining the parrying system, in fact I would say that the game has a poor tutorial system overall. One thing that really irked me was that it does not tell you how to perform the combos at all. Not only that but apparently you start the game off with large amount of different combos and I didn't know I had half of them until I looked them up on IGN's online guide. And this was after beating the game once.

Supposedly the original team was constantly running into continuity issues with the original story concept. Another reason I heard was that after Platinum games was given the title it was decided that it would be better/easier for them to have the game set after MGS4. IMO, this makes sense. Having the game set after MGS4 reduces the chance of continuity errors and gives Platinum games a lot more room to maneuver. Also, when you consider the fact that Platinum games might not know everything about MGS canon, this was probably a good move.

Personally, I don't see how the events of MGR makes everything in MGS4 all for nothing. A world without the Patriots is already a huge plus and one of the MGR bosses makes a good point, "The Patriots didn't create the war economy, they just managed it". And if you really despise the story then just pretend it never happened. The story is self-contained enough that its relatively insignificant to the Metal Gear timeline.

MB202:

HA, if that's the case, and I highly doubt it is, then the joke's on him. MGS3 is widely considered his masterpiece and Peacewalker is generally considered a good game. MGS2 and 4 are at worst split down the line with regards to how they are viewed by the fans. Seriously, I understand that the guys wants to move onto other things, but where do people keep getting the idea he's trying to sabotage every post MGS1 game?

gphjr14:
I like how despite all the technological advances that exist in the Metal Gear universe, a hands free head set isn't available and Raiden has to put his damn hand up to his face when he wants to talk.

"I am a god damn cyborg and someone couldnt be assed to give me a god damn bluetooth headset? Fuck you guys!"

Zer0Saber:
Yes, when you get to the end of the game it just goes completely bonkers batshit. I mean a real WTF.

Not any crazier than any other MGS game

AgentLampshade:
So, did he not know Platinum Games did most of it?

MGS always had swearing it just wasn't as noticable in a 50 hour movie.
DMC not so much.

Definitely giving way too much credit to Kojima. So much so, that I'd say you're giving infinitely too much credit to him, because that's probably the inverse of what he was thinking.

Was I the only person who was slightly offended A) By Raiden's costume when he went to Mexico, or B) Every word or phrase that "George" (The only young character in the game), said. The translation and the broken english was a bit much. Way to be a solid stereotype...

Sterotype? He was anything but that. Also Sunny is another young character.

Now if you want stereotypical.
As for the costume those still exist.

Good review Yahtzee, and lol at the few jokes you've made about The sneaking around. Our guy cuts everything up like it was nothing and he just runs with noise echoing the halls.. How can he even sneak period let alone have to in the first place?

The way I understood it the only MGS game he tried to "sabotage" was 4. MGS1 and 2 were both what he wanted with MGS taking Metal Gear to 3D and MGS2 deconstructing MGS1. He wanted to pass it off there and as I understood it leave MGS2 as it was so that people could interpret the events as they saw it. However fans whined, so he worked on MGS3, a prequel, to give people more MGS and expand on the story without compromising MGS2's ending. However they still whined. So Kojima relented and made MGS4, nanomachined everything that he wasn't ever actually going to explain before and killed off Liquid, Ocolot, Naomi, Big Boss, Solidus and Snake so people would finally shut up.
